UC Davis Ready to Send Deadbeat Clinton Campaign to Collections

The Jed Report Wed Apr 9. 2008

In her personal life, Hillary Clinton may be $109 million richer than she was seven years ago, but on the campaign trail, her money woes are mounting.According to Sacramento's CBS13, UC Davis is getting ready to serve the deadbeat Clinton campaign with collection papers.
The university is owed more than $6,000 from an event held there this past January. The expenses include:

o $500 for the school's marching band
o $250 for janitorial cleanup services
o $5,600 for security provided by the UC Davis Police

The television station reports that Clinton's Sacramento office closed two months ago, and that the Clinton campaign press office did not return a reporter's phone calls.

Play the video here

UC Davis will send its final notice to the campaign this week. If that doesn't result in payment, the university's next step will be to send the bill to a collection agency.

War? What war? I didn't vote for no stinkin' war!

Jed Report Tue Apr 8, 2008

One of the most amusing spectacles of the campaign has been watching Hillary Clinton claim that she didn't vote to authorize war, that she was only voting to put inspectors on the ground inside Iraq, and that Bush abused the limited authority that he was given. That doesn't seem to be what she thought on March 20, 2003 when she supported the following resolution:

I don't mention this to take Clinton's claim seriously. Just the opposite, in fact.

5. The Reason Hillary Clinton Lost
Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 12:29 AM by WillYourVoteBCounted

The Reason Hillary Clinton Lost

Wed Apr 9, 2008 Jed Report

As journalists prepare the inevitable obituaries for Hillary Clinton's presidential bid, I hope we will remember what is -- at least for many of us --
the single most important reason that Hillary Clinton is losing the presidential nomination: her stubborn refusal to admit she made a mistake in voting for the war in Iraq.

As she said in February, 2007:
If the most important thing to any of you is choosing someone who did not cast that vote or has said his vote was a mistake,
then there are others to choose from.

...Play video at this link

…. I still remember when I first heard those words, and I still believe they doomed her candidacy

…But in life you don't get do-overs, and she did have enough information at the time to have made a different decision. She did make an error in judgment -- an avoidable one, and by refusing to admit that fact, she offered us no indication that she would avoid the very same error in the future.

… But there's no doubt that she will lose, and that moment from February 17, 2007 in Dover, New Hampshire is the single most important reason why.

6. Hillary's History of Failure to Vet Facts And Use Them With Good Judgment
The Bush administration has shown how easy it is to reject facts, refuse to accept reality and factual information.
Hillary's showing us that she has a propensity, well, at least a history, of doing the same.

Hillary's History of Failure to Vet Facts And Use Them With Good Judgment

by Rob Kall Op Ed News April 7, 2008

Hillary's repeated gaffes over claims about her past, about the patient who died without health insurance--
they tell us she does NOT have what it takes to take information, process it, and make those three AM decisions.

Hillary's Fact Checking Problem Dates Back to Her Vote To FOR the Iraq war

Hillary has told us, repeatedly, that she based her decision to vote FOR giving Bush permission to go to war upon the facts she had access to.

She has staked her future on this.

But lately, she's shown again and again that her judgment in assessing the facts upon which she bases decisions-- lately, decisions to make claims and statements-- is sadly lacking.

How many times can she excuse herself as being tire, misspeaking, not getting good enough vetting on information?

Keith Olbermann calls it "truth decay."

7. Why Barack Obama Won

Why Barack Obama Won

Jed Report. Wed Apr 9,08

Actually, there are so many reasons Barack Obama is winning. But at the center of it: judgment, intellect, and steady resolve --
three traits he displayed brilliantly before the Iraq war.

As Obama reminded Democrats on Nov. 23, 2004:

It's important for us to stand our ground and take our licks, rather than what sometimes is our habit,
which is to cave and whine about it afterwards, which makes us not only look weak, but petty.

Obama campaign to raise $1M in 60 seconds

WASHINGTON, April 8 UPI

-- Supporters of Democratic presidential contender Barack Obama say they will use the Internet to try to raise $1 million in a single minute.

The creation of AnObamaMinute.com comes after the Illinois senator's campaign announced it raised nearly $40 million in March, nearly double the amount raised by his primary season rival, Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., BusinessWeek.com reported.

AnObamaMinute.com is exhorting donors -- who can pre-register -- to log in and make a pledge within 60 seconds at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 21, the day before the Pennsylvania primary. Polls show Obama trailing Clinton in Pennsylvania.

Analysts said the Web site underscores the engagement and enthusiasm that has buoyed Obama's campaign.

"In some ways, the Internet connects Obama supporters better," Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia, told BusinessWeek.com. "Clinton and McCain supporters are generally older, and this kind of high-speed fund-raising may not exactly be the way they think."

Calling Obama "the greatest fund-raising success in American history," Sabato said AnObamaMinute.com "is another wrinkle, another innovation that confirms the Internet's potential."

10. New Clinton Blogger Meme - Oh Noes Obama is Buyin’ Teh Elekshuns!!!

Buyin’ Teh Elekshuns!!!New Clinton Blogger Meme

Oliver Willis April 9, 2008

FLASHBACK: Remember another candidate spending lavishly on an election?

She had only token opposition, but Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton still spent more on her re-election — upward of $30 million — than any other candidate for Senate this year. So where did all the money go?

It helped Mrs. Clinton win a margin of victory of more than 30 points. It helped her build a new set of campaign contributors. And it allowed her to begin assembling the nuts and bolts needed to run a presidential campaign.

But that was not all. Mrs. Clinton also bought more than $13,000 worth of flowers, mostly for fund-raising events and as thank-yous for donors. She laid out $27,000 for valet parking, paid as much as $800 in a single month in credit card interest and — above all — paid tens of thousands of dollars a month to an assortment of consultants and aides.

Throw in $17 million in advertising and fund-raising mailings, and what had been one of the most formidable war chests in politics was depleted to a level that leaves Mrs. Clinton with little financial advantage over her potential rivals for the 2008 Democratic presidential nomination — and perhaps even trailing some of them.

12. NC Voter Registrations Surge Ahead of the May 6 Primary
"It's not enough that you're registered. It's not enough that you're fired up and ready to go," Obama's wife, Michelle, said during a speech this week in Winston-Salem. "All of you know about 20 trifling people in your lives, that after a whole long year, still don't know there's a presidential election coming up. You have to pick up the phone."

North Carolina Voter Registrations Climb Ahead of May 6 Primary

MIKE BAKER AP News Apr 09, 2008 12:49 EST

More than four times as many blacks have registered to vote in North Carolina during the first few months of 2008 as four years ago, a sign that bodes well for Sen. Barack Obama in the state's May 6 Democratic presidential primary.

…More than 45,000 blacks signed up to vote in the first three months of 2008, compared with just over 11,000 in the first three months of 2004. White voter registration more than doubled with 106,000 new registrations between Jan. 1 and March 31, compared with 47,000 four years ago.

…Blacks have historically accounted for about one-third of voters in North Carolina's Democratic primary. Obama has won a string of Southern primaries and caucuses in states with a large share of black voters.

…There were less than 5.1 million people registered to vote in May 2004, compared with more than 5.7 million today. The Democratic presidential race was over early by comparison to this year, with North Carolina Sen. John Edwards bowing out to Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts after the March 2 Super Tuesday elections.

…The Obama campaign launched several voter registration initiatives in the past few weeks, bringing in singer Tatyana Ali to lead registration drives and launching a competition that awards the leading registration recruiters a meeting with Obama.

14. Hillary's Last Charge

Hillary's Last Charge

by Bob Burnett at OpEdNews April 8, 2008

The battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, was the turning point of the American Civil War. On the third day, July 3, 1863, the Confederate Army's failed assault on the Union forces massed on Cemetery Ridge – Pickett's Charge – marked the end of the struggle.
Many observers believe the April 22nd Pennsylvania Primary may prove to be the decisive battle in the struggle for the
2008 Democratic Presidential nomination. Will this be Hillary Clinton's last charge?

On March 28th, Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey defied Governor Ed Rendell's political machine and endorsed Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama. Since that time, tracking polls indicate Senator Clinton's lead over Senator Obama has shrunk. While it is too soon to tell whom the April 22nd winner will be, it seems unlikely that Clinton will achieve the massive, double-digit victory her campaign has predicted. If she doesn't it is unlikely she can overtake his lead in delegates and total popular vote.

…Senator Clinton began 2008 as the candidate with experience. After February 5th, this persona fractured and was replaced by a series of images: fighter Hillary, vulnerable Hillary, conciliatory Hillary, confrontational Hillary, and most recently, "Paulette Revere" Hillary. As the aura of inevitability dissipated, her campaign mottoes constantly changed: "Solutions for America," "Change You Can Believe In," "Renewing the Promise of America," "Ready for Change, Ready to Lead," and "In It To Win It." Meanwhile, her financial support dwindled. While Obama's strategy depended on a large number of donors making repeated contributions, Clinton's appealed on a small number making the maximum legal donation. In March, Obama out raised Clinton by 2 to 1 and reported 1,276,000 contributors.

…As Hillary Clinton prepares for her last charge up the political hills of Pennsylvania, she'd do well to remember the bitter lesson learned by the Confederate Army at the Battle of Gettysburg: You must control the high ground to win. Unfortunately for Senator Clinton, it's Barack Obama who has taken the high ground and it's too late for her to do anything about that.

15. campaign said to be 'rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic'

Clinton campaign said to be 'rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic'

Jim Brown - OneNewsNow - 4/9/2008

A political scientist believes the departure of Hillary Clinton's top strategist two weeks before the Pennsylvania primary is a bad omen for her presidential campaign.

Senior strategist Mark Penn quit the Clinton campaign Sunday after it was revealed he had met with Colombian government officials to promote a bilateral free trade deal that Clinton opposes. Senator Clinton (D-New York), who has paid Penn nearly $11 million so far, fired campaign manager Patti Solis Doyle, a longtime aide, in February.

According to an Associated Press report, Penn is the chief executive of public relations with Burson-Marsteller. Penn met with Colombian officials at the end of March, and they agreed to pay Burson-Marsteller $300,000 to be used in "educating" members of Congress about the trade deal and to secure $5 billion in continued anti-drug program funding in Colombia.

Clemson University pollster and political science professor Dave Woodard says the Penn controversy will only benefit frontrunner Senator Barack Obama (D-Illinois). "ome of the things did, like going down and talking this trade agreement and this stuff, is clearly off the wall -- but I think it shows more about the Clinton campaign than it does about Penn," Woodard contends. "They're rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic here because they're behind. And when you have something like this happen, it only adds more weight to your problems."

Pelosi again says joint ticket won't happen

Alexander Mooney CNN Politicker April 9. 08

(CNN) — A presidential ticket including both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama would surprise many political watchers, but none more so than House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The California Democrat has repeatedly called such a ticket "impossible," and in an interview with mtvU student journalists Tuesday, she said flatly, "I don't see it."

"In this case, I don't see that as politically expedient," Pelosi said. "New York, Illinois…either one I believe are going to be strong Democratic states. I think it is up to the nominee to choose his or her vice presidential candidate."

Pelosi also seemed to suggest the two current Democratic presidential contenders wouldn't feel comfortable together on the same ticket.
"The person that is good is the person the presidential candidate feels comfortable with," she said, adding later, "I've just been involved in politics for a very long time and I just don't think that would be the ticket."

Charleston Gazette Endorses Obama -WVa

The Charleston Gazette | April 08, 2008

Obama: Presidential endorsement

For the first time since the historic 1960 primary election, the Democratic presidential nomination remains hotly contested as West Virginians prepare to vote. So this state's Democrats and independents may, once again, help decide U.S. history.

We hope they support the brilliant, inspiring, eloquent frontrunner in the race, Barack Obama.

Sen. Obama is a rare figure in U.S. politics - a deep thinker who rises above partisan sniping and makes statecraft seem noble. He raises hope that, after the disastrous Bush years mercifully come to an end, Americans can again be proud of their national leader.
Obama appeals to the innate decency in all groups of people, beyond party lines, without personal grandiosity. He fosters a desire to restore America's finest values of honor and fairness.

In endorsing Obama, Sen. Jay Rockefeller pointed out that the young Illinois lawyer had to work hard - "there was nothing sheltered about his life" - but he rose to national stature. Rockefeller said Obama was far-sighted enough to oppose President Bush's unwise plan to invade Iraq while most others, including rival Hillary Clinton, supported the invasion.

20. Portland Tribune endorses Barack Obama

Portland Tribune endorses Barack Obama

by Sam Graham-FelsenWednesday, April 09, 2008

The Portland Tribune has endorsed Barack Obama for president...

Obama is best for Democrats

Oregon Democrats can do their part to encourage the nation to move forward by throwing their support to Sen. Barack Obama in the May 20 primary.

The fact that Oregon matters at all in this presidential race is something of a small miracle, considering the lateness of its primary. But since Oregonians have a rare chance this election year to influence whom the Democrats ultimately select to run in November, the state’s voters ought to stake their claim on the future and help the nation transcend bitter divisions of the past.

Coming into Oregon and other late-primary states, the Illinois senator is maintaining a small lead in pledged delegates over Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y. Both Obama and Clinton have visited the state (along with former President Clinton) and have ignited levels of excitement not seen during an Oregon primary since the mid-1970s.

The two Democratic candidates have similarities on the issues, and they present an opportunity to break racial and gender barriers for the nation’s highest office. But our support for Obama comes down to a belief that the nation is weary of family dynasties in the White House and is in search of new ways to resolve old battles – domestically and abroad...

Obama’s campaign already has proven transformative in many ways. He has engaged and motivated younger voters who are willing to put aside the cynicism held by many of their elders and to believe again that government can be a positive force for change. Obama also represents a singular opportunity to unify this nation around the strength of its racial and ethnic diversity.

Postal Going Obama

American Postal Workers Union endorses Obama

by Sam Graham-FelsenWednesday, April 09, 2008 at 12:29 PM

The American Postal Workers Union has endorsed Barack Obama for president.
The APWU is the world's largest postal union, representing over 330,000 USPS employees and retirees,
as well as nearly 2,000 private-sector mail workers.
From the APWU release...

The National Executive Board of the American Postal Workers Union has voted unanimously to endorse Sen. Barack Obama for president.

“Sen. Obama’s message is one of hope and change,” said union President William Burrus. “His message is special, and the timing is right.”

“We are most impressed by Sen. Obama’s commitment to eradicating the undue influence of special interests in the political process,” he said. “Our current political system does not allow for the voices of average citizens to be heard over the demands of lobbyists and big-money campaign contributors.

“Sen. Obama has vowed to change that, and his campaign has flourished through the participation of new voters and small contributors,” Burrus said. “We believe he will be a president who will strongly represent the interests of working Americans.”

“His ability to bring new participants into our nation’s democratic process – to get young people involved, and to persuade ordinary citizens that they have a real stake in politics – is an inspiration.”

“We are pleased to endorse Sen. Barack Obama for president of the United States, and we will commit our energy and efforts to help him win the White House.”

Special delivery: Obama's Postals

April 9, 2008 by Mike Dorning Baltimore Sun

No, the endorsement is not in the mail.
The American Postal Workers Union announced its support for Barack Obama with an e-mail sent to reporters a few minutes ago.

The union, which claims to be the largest postal union in the world, said its executive board voted to endorse Obama today.

"We are most impressed by Sen. Obama's commitment to eradicating the undue influence of special interests in the political process, union president William Burrus said in a statement. "Our current political system does not allow for the voices of average citizens to be heard over the demands of lobbyists and big-money campaign contributors."

The union says it represents approximately 300,000 postal workers with clerical, maintenance and motor vehicle-related jobs.
