Tiger vs. Nobody
Will the lack of a suitable rival hurt Tiger Woods' legacy?

By Dave Larzelere
Posted Wednesday, April 9, 2008,

The yin-and-yang theory of greatness is a familiar argument that cuts across all sports. Borg needed McEnroe's challenge to elevate him, and vice versa. Likewise for Russell and Chamberlain, and the two names atop the Mount Olympus of sports rivalries, Ali and Frazier.

Thus far, no Frazier has emerged to counter Woods' Ali-like dominance. Phil Mickelson has been the nearest candidate, and yet, for all his talent, he has only three major titles. Since his historic collapse in the 2006 U.S. Open, Mickelson's best finish in a major is a tie for 16th—while he's a fan favorite just like Palmer was, it's looking highly unlikely that there will ever be a book titled Tiger and Phil.
<>
Going by the Arnie-and-Jack index, it's hard to imagine what this absent adversary could add to Tiger's narrative, because Tiger himself is the entire equation. As the most charismatic and marketable golfer who's ever lived, he is the clear heir to Palmer, the sport's first great salesman-idol. And, of course, he is the only credible heir to Nicklaus, simply because he's so overwhelmingly and consistently dominant.

2. No problem. I don't know why that right-winged ashhole mentioned Tiger Woods to begin with
at McCain's rally.

It was the stupidest comment any fuckin' asshole could have said.

he says it like it's an insult. Tiger has accomplished a hell of a lot more in his life than John McCain has. Tiger will be remembered forever. McCain? Not unless he wins the Presidential election. Otherwise he's just another hack Congressman. Tiger has done a shitload with his foundation as well as other charities that work with his foundation and he's only 32 years old! Imagine what he'll be doing 20 years from now. He has done more for children in this country in his 11+ years as a professional than McCain has done in his entire political career. Comparing possibly the world's greatest athlete ever to a politician and trying to insinuate that a comparison to said athlete is somehow a NEGATIVE thing is incredible. Comparing Barack to Tiger should be viewed as a compliment, but we know based on his tone of voice and his party affiliation that it was race-baiting. Some of the lamest race-baiting I've ever seen quite honestly.

Repuke compared Obama to Tiger Woods like he thought he was delivering an "oh, I'm so clever" insult, but it is NO INSULT to compare Obama to Tiger. Tiger is world class. Tiger is a champion of magnitude. Tiger is at the top of his field. Tiger is an international superstar who displays both confidence and a passion for his game.

Why in the world would anybody view a comparison to Tiger an insult?

The Repuke only showed how dumbass he really is, IMHO.

13. Not really.
A Repuke put the sports metaphor into play by comparing Obama to Tiger at a McCain rally. It's totally appropriate to discuss the Repuke's assholeness in the GD:P forum, since it relates.

10. its a scream, especially after seeing that video of McSame's veteran supporter
sheesh.

What on earth happened to McCain?

Seems like Bush broke him back in 2000 with the dirty campaign
and lying robocalls.

Now we have the insane McCain.

11. One of these days, you just know that Arnold Palmer's wife is going to challenge him.

She'll claim that she's an "experienced champion golfer" because she's married to him. The whore sports media will hype her as the new PGA champion, until it's time to actually play.

Bad analogy? Maybe. I'm not exactly a golf expert (despite the fact that I could pass for John Daly's twin).
