Wow... I can't believe this has happened
But there's finally a controversy here so dumb, so overblown, so idiotic, so meaningless, that even *I* can't bring myself to get involved.

Elton John? "To hell with 'em"? Really?!? That's what we're reduced to discussing now?

I'm gonna go watch something smarter on TV - like Hee-Haw.

62. Seriesly!!!
It would be prudent for Hillary to come out immediately and completly distance herself from a man that would make such hurtful and outlandish remarks. Then square up with the American people and explain why she continued to listen to his music for decades knowing his mindset. We, as a nation need to have time to heal. This needs to get air time at the top of every hour non-stop for 18 days.

The hurt is overwhelming. She needs to do the right thing and get out in front of this issue. A public painful outcry should be enough to have her step up to the plate and denounce Elton's remarks and the public should painstakingly go through and parce everyone of his song lyrics over the past 25 years to find anything questionable he may have sang or implied.

Human decency would demand nothing less.

:eyes:

Elton John performed a benefit concert for Hillary. Once.

Wright said "God damn america." John told American misogynists to go to hell.

You truly don't see how disingenuous it is to compare the two?

I get the sense that the fines would only be levied against poor working saps who can't scrounge up the change to pay their premiums. Big companies (or campaigns) who can't pay their bills will be forgiven. Kinda like Bear Stearns.

33. Maddy, do you seriously have an objecton to Wright's statements
or are you just arguing that they could be politically harmful to Obama in the general?

What did Wright say that isn't true?

That aside, have you watched of his sermons other than the parts that were cherry-picked by the media? I'll provide a link to a few:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RvMbeVQj6Lw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOdlnzkeoyQ

I know they're not the convenient short clips that the media's provided, but if you want to honestly debate this issue, it's worth the 20 or so minutes it'll take.

36. I've said it a thousand times.
No personal objection. But, hell, I attend black churches here, go to black funerals, (used to drink at black bars, when I drank) so none of that is alien to me.

I do think it could do Obama political harm. I have no personal objection, however. I live in the deep south, where I'm in close quarters with my black neighbors and friends, where blacks make up over 66% of the population, which is headed by a black mayor. I don't view this topic from afar...I'm right here in the middle of it.

And I agree with 80% of what I hear black preachers here saying. And I don't have any personal objection to what Wright said--when it's placed in context of the entire sermon.

McClurkin is another topic...I do have personal objections to what he says.

(And I appreciate the civility in my and your exchange. I wish more people were willing to speak openly like this at DU. We might learn a little from each other. :) )

89. I Don't Trust The Right Wing Spin Machine
I have no problem with any of Rev Wright's statements and I knew what was being played 24/7 was a tiny snippet of a sermon. I don't think there is a person in the world that couldn't be made to look like someone they are not jut by selecting comments out of context.

What I do have a problem with is the right wing spin machine and I would be just as worried if Hillary got the nomination. I don't think she will but my concern covers all democratic candidates whether local, state or federal.

Bush made the comment that if you repeat something long enough and often enough people will believe it and we have seen it happen too many times. Truth matters little to those people. Even those charges that have been debunked time and time again still make the internet rounds. Democrats must fight ridiculous charges against all democratic candidates.

71. You should only be offended if you're a misogynist.
Because THAT'S who Elton said "to hell with." Sorry to bother you with the FACTS.

Rev. Wright, on the other hand, said "God damn AMERICA," which means "all of it."

41. Did Elton and Hillary violate campaign finance law?
Sir Elton is a foreign national contributing valuable services to a Presidential campaign. Isn't this skirting the campaign finance laws?

78. Nice Try!
Haven't been around long enough to see that one debunked over and over again?

No more than Rezco's cash-filled easter egg hunt on the Obama lawn.

Why did you leave me

I searched the world over

You met another and blttt

45. You must have missed Bookbag-gate.
That vies with the smearing of Sinbad for dumbest made-up scandal I've ever seen on DU.

49. Yes it is as stupid as the Wright non-issue.
I am glad you agree with that. The smears posted here by both sides are shameless.

I'm surprised I'm not seeing "fuck that Limey faggot" in that thread.

Sir Elton condemned misogyny. Am I seeing something wrong with that?

68. Welcome to the other side of the Reverend Wright "scandal"...
It ain't pretty, is it?

And, FWIW, the "outrage" that I have professed about this incident is entirely fake. Much like the faux-rage that many Hillary supporters professed regarding Wright.

85. This country has been going downhill ever since corporate America killed Hee-Haw
Hee-Haw was the greatest show on TV ever, the last valient gasp of vaudeville on the broadcasted wasteland. I can't believe you'd imply it wasn't smart TV. You, sir, are formally disinvited to my next "I'm apickin versus I'm agrinnin" hoedown showdown.

Saaaaluute!
