I've only visited your website once because I thought that bring pots and pans to protest the media sexism on the Today show was some kind of joke or a smear against Hillary supporters. I've since gone there several times to see how this thing could get wings and actually have gotten off the ground. After reading though maybe two pages of post...it isn't hard to see. I will not be back on your website again.

You are protesting two political commentators on a network that is in 3rd place in the ratings of Cable news networks. Keith Olberman and Chris Matthews are not reporters they are commentators therefore they owe no one objectivity. If it was Brian Williams you had a bief with or Matt Lauer I could see maybe your point. You are essentially protesting free speach.

I want to add that NBC has been kind of nice to Hillary with SNL...you might want to think about biting a hand that feeds you I digress on that point though.

Another thing I find funny is you have 12 seperate forums to bash Obama and one Forum for republicans and John McCain. Just seems odd to me that you need 12 forums for Obama trashing.

I also find it odd you would think Obama supporters might physically assault you...I've never heard of this happening. Trust me when I say this...All Obama supporters want this event to happen. None of us would do anything to disrupt it. We want you out for the cameras in all your glory.

None of us at DU want to discourage you in your protest...in fact most of us actively encourage you to go out to the Today show. We want you banging pots and pans and screaming at the top of your lungs your outrage over a small cable network that reaches maybe 300,000 people at any given minute and is in 3rd place. We want you to expose yourself for your narrowed mindness in this campaign and with all that is going on with this country with the War and the Recession that MSNBC is the enemy your interested in bringing down the most.

...sad thing to do, for everyone involved.

For the person doing the Alerting, you might as well announce to the world that you can't fight your own battles and need the schoolyard monitor to fight your battles for you by censoring someone with whom you don't agree.

For the person who was Alerted on, it can be a chilling impact on the freedom with which you post. Some people take it very seriously, and so much need to conform that they start self-censoring, which is the biggest mind-fuck that anyone can do to you. I believe it is intended to be chilling on your posting style, and I believe it is intended to be a mind-fuck. Otherwise, it would be done in a different way.

For the moderators, it puts them in an uncomfortable position of having to referee a posting battle between adults. I don't know about DU, but when I moderated on the ACLU boards, we didn't censor (except for outright advertising and giving out of personal information of staff such that the staff could be located in the physical world), and even when I had to remove an Amway advertisement, I hated doing it.

For the other posters not involved in this Alerting business, it also tends to have a chilling impact on the discussion. It's like announcing that the SS troops are marching down the street near your house...they haven't entered your house yet, but they might if you do anything to draw their attention.

I can see where there are legitimate reasons for Alerting, such as making a credible physical threat on another person such that the reader wuold be pretty sure that the threat would be carried out.

But because you don't like the style that another poster used? That is total pussy, IMO, and for the little thrill the alerter gets from tattling, the price paid by everyone else is not worth it.

Just my opinion, your mileage may vary.

A single writer at SNL decided to write a couple of sketches "defending" Hillary, if you will, and immediately it's not only SNL, but the entire damned network that apparently ordered this one writer to defend Hillary. It was the one writer, and the head writer who decided to use the story. Ultimately a sketch works if they think it's funny and if they think it fits the show schedule for that week. That's all. No great fucking conspiracy.

I don't know what to make of the protest. I'm glad that someone is speaking out about misogyny. Women do watch The Today Show, so perhaps this is a good way to gain exposure.
