The DU Presidential Primary Guide to Good Citizenship and Survival
The Democratic presidential primary is now well into its fourth month (or its 16th month, depending on your point of view), and it looks like it might continue for another four months. By now, primary fatigue has long-since set in, and you are starting to wonder if you can possibly make it through to the end without losing your mind.

Fret not! In our continuing efforts to... well... at least make you pause for a moment before you go off half-cocked and call your fellow DUer a "traitorous, kool-ade-drinking, party-wrecking, McCain-enabling, Clintobamabot," we present to you The DU Presidential Primary Guide to Good Citizenship and Survival...

DEALING WITH DISRUPTORS AND RULE-VIOLATIONS

If you see a rule violation, click alert.

If you see a suspicious member who you think is a troll, click alert.

If you do not alert on a rule violation, the moderators probably will not see it. Don't complain if it doesn't get deleted.

DEALING WITH THE MODERATORS AND/OR ADMINISTRATORS

Insulting the moderators -- either publicly, by private message, or in an alert -- is not a successful strategy for getting what you want.

If you send an email to admin claiming that your obvious rule violation was deleted because the moderators are biased against your favored candidate, your message will be ignored.

In fact, if you claim moderator bias for any reason, your message will likely be ignored.

I know you think I oppose your candidate. You're wrong.

COPING WITH STUPID CONTENT

People who say they won't vote for the Democratic presidential nominee in the general election are not to be taken seriously.

Remember that most people here don't actually believe the ridiculous spin they are posting.

Slicing someone's idiotic argument into tiny little ribbons without losing your cool or breaking the rules takes skill -- but it is incredibly satisfying if you can pull it off. Part of the fun is that dumb people (and dumb bystanders who are reading the exchange) won't realize that they lost the argument. But smart people -- no matter which candidate they support -- will know that you won.

Trolls like attention. They especially like being flamed. If you flame a troll, you lose. If you can expose their stupidity with a quick surgical strike -- without losing your cool or breaking the rules -- by all means go for it. But don't flame and don't let yourself get dragged into an extended back-and-forth, because then you lose.

If you think the problems in the GDP forum are caused primarily by the supporters of one candidate, or if you believe that the supporters of one candidate are better behaved or less disruptive or smarter or more patriotic than the supporters of another candidate, you haven't been paying very close attention.

People who claim they would vote for John McCain over either of the two remaining Democratic candidates are either not progressive or not thinking straight. If you post this, you are basically daring the mods to give you a tombstone.

TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR DU EXPERIENCE

If you want to get away from the infighting about the primaries, we have given you the tools to do so. Read this thread for instructions on hiding the General Discussion: Primaries forum.

If someone sends you an unwanted message to your DU inbox, click the link that says "Block correspondence from {username}."

The ignore function is almost (but not quite) as good as a tombstone. It makes the annoying people disappear.

TAKING SOME RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN BEHAVIOR

Look in the mirror. If your behavior makes you part of the problem, stop complaining! Or better yet, knock it off!

If you keep participating in the infighting about the primaries, then perhaps you are getting some utility from it.

"Everybody else does it" is not an excuse.

If your post gets deleted or your thread gets locked, suck it up.

BEING A GOOD DU CITIZEN

Remember that simply because something is not forbidden by the DU rules does not mean it is constructive, civil, or appropriate. If you are serious about improving the tone in the GDP forum, you should start by becoming the type of DU citizen you expect others to be. Here are a few ideas:

Read the DU rules and follow them.

Call the candidates by their appropriate names: Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, or Senator Clinton and Senator Obama.

Do not refer to candidate supporters using derogatory names. Say "Clinton supporters" and "Obama supporters."

Do not make broad-brush statements about supporters of either candidate.

Remember that supporters of both candidates are good people who want what's best for this country, and for the world.

Don't just stick up for your own candidate. Defend BOTH candidates against unfair, misleading, bigoted, or otherwise inappropriate attacks.

Don't believe something simply because it is favorable to your candidate, or because it is unfavorable to the other.

Be extra sensitive when discussing issues related to race and gender.

Don't act like a jerk.

Don't be a hypocrite.

Use your brain.

MANAGING YOUR EXPECTATIONS

Out in the real world, this primary has become very ugly, with campaigns and their surrogates saying very ugly and divisive things. I appreciate the fact that you wish DU members would be better behaved than the campaigns they support. I do, too. But don't get your hopes up.

As a general rule, the administrators believe it is better to let the members of DU sort out your differences, rather than have us step in and resolve them for you.

I do not have the power to make you happy. Only you can make you happy.

If you feel you are getting upset, do yourself (and everyone else) a favor and step away from the computer.

Remember: It's just a message board.

AND FINALLY

If your reaction to reading this thread is something along the lines of, "All right! I am going to freak out and act like a complete jerk whenever I think someone has failed to live up to the standard set in Skinner's post," then you have completely missed the point.

Feel free to add your own items to this list...

9. Another trick is sorting a forum by start time rather than last reply (the default)
Then you see the new items that might otherwise be lost, and not just the flame wars that, like hot air, rise.

If you're really interested in revisiting a topic, there's bookmarks, or you can find it again quickly if you posted a reply.

We could also use a post of two cartoons I've seen here - the animation that bloodies itself against the keyboard, and the one with the punchline something like, "No, I can't come to bed. Someone on the internet is WRONG!"

this is my favorite part, almost poetic:

Slicing someone's idiotic argument into tiny little ribbons without losing your cool or breaking the rules takes skill -- but it is incredibly satisfying if you can pull it off. Part of the fun is that dumb people (and dumb bystanders who are reading the exchange) won't realize that they lost the argument. I bought a Nikon D100 at a great price on ebay. I'm trying to capture more than the IP, its just the easiest to work with now. :silly:

hey, if you ever come back this way and don't want to stay indoors, you know live in a tent for the sake of old times, the bay half of under the house is screened in - you could pitch a tent there. :)

189. Absolutely Bear misses you and your pack.
I know he's happiest when he's living with both people and dogs.
I miss having the house/dog-sitter. It's $35 a day to board him when I have to travel! :wow: Though the kennel did name him "Pooch of the Week" on their web site this week. I'm so proud!

Thank you for the screen porch offer! :pals: That sounds lovely for a visit. I had a screened porch I slept on during the summers as a kid, loved falling asleep and waking to the sounds and smells of nature. Though I warn you, if you have a confederate jasmine in bloom when I'm there I may never leave.

and of course bear won pooch of the week, he is a great dog

and that site has a puppy cam - what a hoot - you get to check on him while away

"I do not have the power to make you happy. Only you can make you happy."

I bet Kylie Minogue could make me happy if only she was motivated to try. The same, of course, would hold true of any number of my ex-girlfriends. Then there are also human resources people who could have hired me for better jobs, but chose not to, etc., etc. Don't expect me to pull myself up by my own bootstraps. :P

66. Skinner, how can we discuss the Democratic Leadership Council, New Democrats
and other RW elements within the Democratic Party? I assume that this thread of mine is ok.

"Know Your DLC: Current DLC Leadership Team and other Democratic Leadership Council links"
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5396391

These corporate RW DLC/New Democrats are part of a political machine within the Democratic Party that abandoned the party's traditional base and voters decades ago and are heavily involved and associated with the campaign of Sen. Clinton who is not above rigorous examination within DU rules.

The DLC/New Democrats leading policy think tank, the Progressive Policy Institute/PPI received funding from the extreme RW-and the PPI's policies mirror many of those of the neoconservatives-I absolutely think getting this information out to all is critical.

I know that discussion of criminal corruption is ok-but when it comes to the DLC/New Democrats associated with Sen. Clinton's (a DLC leader herself) campaign what advice can you give us?

200. I don't hafta take his sass ...
I didn't see that complaint until after reading your post and, by then, the first thread was locked.

Good catch. It reminded me of this:

"Won't answer a word you say long as you keep on mockin' me," she said. "Ma'am?" asked Atticus, startled.

"Long's you keep on makin' fun o'me."

Judge Taylor said, "Mr. Finch is not making fun of you. What's the matter with you?"

Mayella looked from under lowered eyelids at Atticus, but she said to the judge: "Long's he keeps on callin' me ma'am an sayin' Miss Mayella. I don't hafta take his sass, I ain't called upon to take it."

Atticus resumed his stroll to the windows and let Judge Taylor handle this one. Judge Taylor was not the kind of figure that ever evoked pity, but I did feel a pang for him as he tried to explain. "That's just Mr. Finch's way," he told Mayella. "We've done business in this court for years and years, and Mr. Finch is always courteous to everybody. He's not trying to mock you, he's trying to be polite. That's just his way."

You are right about campaign staffers and operatives being unpleasant, however, my real world experience as delegate at the caucus and County Convention was that delegates for both candidates were much more respectful and civil toward each other than they are here on DU.

75. I have one to add:
Maybe it's upthread and I missed it, but: Treat newbies with respect.

We have taken on a lot of new members since this started (the 2004 primary brought me in). And too often the number of posts or "date joined" is taken as a signal that he/she is a troll, fool, Freeper -- especially when the newcomer takes a stand for or against a candidate, or asks a question about same. No one has "trolldar" good enough to pound a newbie without giving him/her some time to establish a record. I remember back in '04 a very well known DUer slammed a newbie, saying he could "spot them every time" based on his "long experience." The poster turned out to be the 14-year-old son of a long-time DUer (as I recall) and the post was sincere. The person who assaulted him apologized later (which is good), but iy just goes to show that no one should assume anything at first glance. We need new members. I assume Skinner would agree.

Treat newbies with respect.

What a nice sentiment. And I know it looks like I'm a newbie myself, but I've been reading DU every day (including weekends) since `03. It's a great way to stay in touch with things back home (USA). I just created an account recently because this is such an exciting election and I wanted to put in my 2 cents along with everyone else for a change.

But I love when DU'ers see my post count and they give me a hearty "Welcome to DU, Number23!!" along with the two smileys clicking beers emoticon. Nothing beats that, no matter how many times I've gotten it.

180. Excellent point
Unfortunately there are "post count snobs" here that make judgments as you suggest. Also those that think that if you have not been on DU for years that you are not "politically active", as if DU is the only place to take action (IMO it is not close to the best way to be active IRL). I have run into both, unfortunately, though I have been very politically active throughout my life, simply because I lurked here for years (almost since this place started) and now don't post much (single word posts and echo chamber posts are not my style).

I really appreciated the way you addressed this and hope that some of those that have done things like this in the past will read it and perhaps remove the DU blinders and rethink their position with regard to "newbies" - not all of whom are even new.

I hope we can treat each other like human beings here and not even consider the person's join date or post count before replying to someone.

116. Sorry. These aren't rules.
So we won't be enforcing them. Been there. Done that. The most thankless, pointless, stress-inducing mistake I ever made.

Most of this stuff is just common sense and common courtesy. If someone wants to be a productive participant, they'll do most of this stuff without my having to say so. But my impression is that most people don't actually want me enforcing this stuff. Sure, they like the idea in the abstract. And they would love to see us enforce this stuff on the people who support the other candidate. But enforcement on them or their friends or other people who support their favored candidate... Not so much.

"Slicing someone's idiotic argument into tiny little ribbons without losing your cool or breaking the rules takes skill -- but it is incredibly satisfying if you can pull it off. But smart people -- no matter which candidate they support -- will know that you won."

just doesn't seem to work "for some of us," when we try to be "good DU citizens." Now I know the argument could be that one person's "offensive post"...is another one's "informative delight." But, there really are some seeming "favorite folks" who can be alerted on by the "masses" but manage to "skate," but others who do just a "couple of mis-steps" and get the Granite Chicklet fast. Just saying...

Otherwise all else is wise caution. So, thanks for the "nudge" to think before we post and keep in mind the dynamics of this long Primary.

the vast, overwhelming majority of the totally insane threads come from right wing sources which have repeatedly been debunked (things like the Hillary lied about Chelsea jogging or Obama is connected to some terrorist). Just this one rule, clearly and consistantly enforced, would make life so much better in this forum and make DU as a whole less embarrassing. Honestly, I wouldn't dare recommend a Democrat come here during the primary thanks to this disgraceful forum.

The broad historical view brings much light, and this election cycle has urgent and momentous implications.

On the other hand, swamps and tide pools have some very interesting simple lifeforms.
Caution must be exercised, of course, as many of these lifeforms are quite toxic.
One may also contract exotic fevers. The dangers are many, indeed.

168. Well said and thanks - even though I haven't been in GD-P since you gave us the power.
My single suggestion:

Don't post angry. Take the time to re-read the post to make sure you've understood it correctly, then take the time to cool off before you construct a rational argument. When a second reply completely misses the point of your argument - or concentrates on a single, minor point to the exclusion of the bigger picture - either put the idiot on "Ignore" or just move along. As Skinner said, the worst thing you can do for a troll is pay attention. The smart people get the subtle, sane arguments, even when they don't agree with your point of view. I have a lot of respect for many people here with whom I strongly disagree.

You folks have taught me a lot in the time I've been here and my anger level is drastically lowered. I still detest what's going on in our country, but I see this site as a tool for education, passing relevant information and the occasional, deadly funny snark. The more than a handful of incredibly talented writers who take the time to inform and educate us is worth far more than the price of admission.

171. I try.
I may not succeed, but I try.

Lately I've been more concerned with trying to keep things civil than I have in the activities of one side or the other.

I keep repeating that it's both sides, not just one, but some folks just don't believe that. It's sort of passive agressive. Play the victim then attack, saying you're justified because the other side started it.

Sometimes this place has all the dynamics of a grade school playground.

Mostly I'm an "alert" monkey.

185. And: If you alert, give a reason in the 'comment' section
We're not mind readers, and it's surprising the number of members who seem to think we are - or that we're so much in agreement with them that no words need pass between us. You can make it something simple, like "personal attack:", or "attack on XXX supporters", and then quote the offending words (because when they're hidden in the middle of a long screed, we sometimes fall asleep while have to read it all :D). Having read the rules, you should know roughly what breaks them, and what doesn't - and supporting a different Dem candidate to you do doesn't make someone a troll, though a few alerts show that some members seem to think that.

If you think a user is a sock-puppet, or a banned user who has returned, then actually mention the account name you suspect in the alert. We don't have perfect recall, and since you've already done the work to find it out, then there's no point in us having to go through it again. Similarly, if you claim a member is 'stalking' you, then give us the evidence. You know when they've made unjustified replies to you before, so give us links to them. We're not being moderators to play 'Clue'.
