National Poll Gives Kerry Solid Lead - LA Times
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democrat John Kerry has a solid lead over President Bush among voters nationwide, according to a Los Angeles Times poll on Thursday that cited widespread unease over the country's direction, Iraq policies and the economy.

Kerry, the U.S. senator from Massachusetts, led Bush by 51 percent to 44 percent nationally in a two-way match-up, according to the poll of 1,230 registered voters taken from Saturday to Tuesday.

The figures dropped with independent Ralph Nader in the mix: Kerry drew 48 percent in a three-way race and Bush 42 percent, the poll showed.

Majorities disapproved of Bush's handling of the economy and Iraq, despite encouraging news on both recently, the poll said. Fifty-six percent of respondents said America "needs to move in a new direction" because Bush's policies have not improved the country.

Wonder why this story doesn't run on CBS, MSGOP, Yahoo...?

1. This is great news...
Why do I feel so depressed and pessimistic this week? I just think it's going to take a miracle to get rid of Bush in November. This administration is capable of absolutely anything.
Somebody cheer me up.....

2. It IS great news. Hang in there.
I know exactly what you mean, although I'm feeling more optimistic this week than I did before my root canal (curing an underlying health problem is good for one's state of mind: trite but true).

Seriously, though, I can't bring myself to look at the poll numbers as "free fall" yet. Maybe when Bush gets down to 30% I'll believe it. I no longer trust the electoral system. I think Karl Rove has a nasty October surprise up his sleeve. And I've taken to saying I'll believe Bush has lost the election when I see the moving van at the White House gate.

But look at what's happening. I know, I know, this week it's All Ronnie, All The Time. Yet when I watched the Daily Show tonight I finally got to see some of the Grilling of John Ashcroft, and was it sweeeet. Senator Joe Biden is now my hero. He said what anyone with brains has been saying and thinking: That US adherence to the Geneva Conventions protects OUR OWN soldiers, and in particular HIS SON. He said it very forcefully, like he might rip someone's throat out for being a complete asshole and not getting that important point.

A sweet, sweet moment. I'm still smiling.

5. Sweet.
I want to echo what other posters have been saying. I'm very optimistic right now that Kerry would win in November in a FAIR ELECTION. But will we have a fair election? What about electronic voting, with no paper trails? Are African Americans and low-income people in Florida still being illegally taken off the voter rolls, like in 2000? Is there an October surprise in store, as another poster said? These are the things that scare me. In a fair election, I'm pretty confident that we'll come out on top.

6. A good sign, yet
ONLY the votes in a few states matter and the media is really spinning the fact that it is neck and neck in those states. Now why would they do a thing like that? :eyes:
