Bill Clinton: "one time late at night when she was exhausted, misstated and immediately apologized"

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalradar/2008/04/bill-clinton-re.html

<snip>

"A lot of the way this whole campaign has been covered has amused me," he said. "But there was a lot of fulminating because Hillary, one time late at night when she was exhausted, misstated and immediately apologized for it, what happened to her in Bosnia in 1995. Did y'all see all that. Oh, they blew it up. Let me just tell you. The president of Bosnia and Gen. Wesley Clark -- who was there making peace where we'd lost three peacekeepers who had to ride on a dangerous mountain road because it was too dangerous to go the regular, safe way -- both defended her because they pointed out that when her plane landed in Bosnia, she had to go up to the bulletproof part of the plane, in the front. Everybody else had to put their flack jackets underneath the seat in case they got shot at. And everywhere they went they were covered by Apache helicopters. So they just abbreviated the arrival ceremony. Now I say that because, what really has mattered is that even then she was interested in our troops. And I think she was the first first lady since Eleanor Roosevelt to go into a combat zone. And you woulda thought, you know, that she'd robbed a bank the way they carried on about this. And some of them when they're 60 they'll forget something when they're tired at 11:00 at night, too."

Sen. Clinton did not apologize, like Mr. Clinton asserted, she simply indicated that she mispoke when describing the Bosnia incident.

While the former president may have been amused by the whole incident, his telling of the course of events wasn't quite accurate. Hillary Clinton actually made the comments numerous times, including at an event in Iowa on Dec. 29, amd an event on Feb. 29 and one time -- bright and early in the morning -- on March 17.

Sen. Clinton wasn't as quick with her apology as President Clinton may remember either. In fact, it took a week for her to eventually correct herself, first talking to the Philadelphia Inquirer editorial board on March 24 and again apologizing the next day in Greensboro, N.C.

Edited on Thu Apr-10-08 09:35 PM by janeaustin
whose vehicle ran off the mountain road.

They were headed to a negotiation when the car in front of that of Clark and, I believe, Richard Holbrooke, went down the side of the mountain.

Wes Clark rappelled down the side and tried to save the people in the vehicle, but they were all dead.

It makes me sick that Bill Clinton uses the completely unrelated death of a fine man, a patriot, and friend of Wes Clark's to prop up his wife's fantastical story.

14. Deflect Columbian ties with Bosnian lies
Surely, there's no internets in Boonville
Did y'all see all that. Oh, they blew it up. Let me just tell you.

Ads don't count - at least not his
As Clinton wrapped up his speech he asked the crowd not to get carried up in everything that can surround these campaigns, citing an ad Sen. Obama has running in Pennsylvania about not taking contributions from oil companies.

"Y'all seen this television ad on, where Hillary's opponent says I don't take money from oil companies? You seen that?" Clinton asked the crowd.

"Well, that's a good thing, but guess what? No living person who's ever run for office has done that. It's been illegal to take political contributions from oil companies for 100 years. It's almost like saying, you know, 'Vote for me, I brush my teeth every morning,' or, 'Vote for me, I never robbed a bank,' or, you know. I say that, because this is not about advertisements. This is about real life. This is a great country with limitless possibilities and profound challenges. And the young people of this country deserve the best president. That's the issue. The best president."

That's the issue. Agreed.

but if Clark has commented on the sniper-gate thing, I'm surprised I haven't heard about it.

I also can't help but feel like Clark must hold a bit of disgust for Hillary's lie, considering the *real* danger he and his men encountered in Bosnia.

27. Thanks Bill! You lied and brought the story BACK IN THE NEWS CYCLE!!!
The statement is still on her web site, buddy!

I certainly do remember that trip to Bosnia, and as Togo said, there was a saying around the White House that if a place was too small, too poor, or too dangerous, the president couldn't go, so send the First Lady. That’s where we went.

I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base.

31. Hey Bill
How's it going? We've never met but I know alot about you. Don't worry, I don't really care about all the shit that happened in your private life way back when. Shit, I like cigars too. (break for laugh) And I actually liked being in the military for for the years while you were around, even though you didn't give us a raise the whole time. But there are budgets to balance, and NAFTA's to defend and everything.

Anyhoo, I was just wondering why you and your wife are so full of shit? Oh, you think I'm talking about the sniper fire debacle. Well, that ties into it, but that was more comic relief than anything. And boy, did we need it! But what I was referring to specifically is how your wife had no problem going along with signing off on the IWR vote but now she's supposedly so vehemently against this war. It'd be one thing to step up to the plate like a human, a la Edwards, and say, boy did I fuck that up. But no. No apologies. No repent. Just business as usual. So I was wondering, Bill, how can any of us, especially veterans, trust a fucking word your wife says?

Oh, in case you're interested, which I'm sure you're not, I have friends who have been shot at, friends who are suicidal, friends who have recurring nightmares, and friends with missing limbs because they all went to Iraq! Well, pal, sorry to bring the mood down. I just thought you might give a shit about the people your wife and friends sent to die.

Toodles.

There may be hell to pay when it comes to telling Hillary it is over, but Bubba is never, NEVER, going to accept blame for derailing Hillary's campaign.

One time - lie
Late at Night - lie

immediately apologized - lie
1995 - i'll give him a pass
bulletproof part of the plane - probably a lie *
sit on flak jackets - probably a lie *
abbreviated the the arrival ceremony - lie
first first lady since Eleanor - lie
tired at 11:00 at night - lie

* I think the pilot said he doesn't remember anything about flak jackets. I know the pilot said, that there was no possible way in hell that he would land a plane with the first lady on it amidst anything close to sniper fire.

Just thinking about a pilot getting the word that there's sniper fire at the airport, and landing the plane with the first lady is laughable on it's face.

December 29, 2007
February 29, 2008
March 17, 2008 (2x)
None of them at 11PM. None!

would say that the Clintons are physically incapable of telling the truth.

Now, both of them just keep digging. Deeper and deeper.

I just don't know why they do it. Do they hold us in such low regard that they feel like they can just say whatever they want as it suits them politically?

I mean, they are both BRILLIANT people. Absolutely brilliant. It makes no sense. It's so simple to just tell the truth.

I am at a loss for words. Almost as if he is trying to sabotage her (whatever is left there to be sabotaged). Try as I may, I cannot think of one rational explanation for such statements (twice yesterday).

Not to mention that "late at night when she was exhausted" make for an interesting contrast to those now famous 3am phone calls....

Also, in one of these two times when he brought up Bosnia yesterday, he also chipped in that she is 60 years old (+ exhausted --> she mis-spoke), as if he wants to bring her on the same level age-wise with McCain. It's insane!

66. A few of us mentioned that here....
back around South Carolina and his multiple foot-in-mouth episodes. I do think he has a subconcious desire to undermine her candidacy.

Bill Clinton is a classic Leo -- King of all His domain, top dog, the one who gets all the attention and who basks in it. Along comes his wife who threatens to overshadow him not only in their daily life, but in the history books -- Bill Clinton will become simply "Mr. Hillary Clinton", the husband of the first female President of the United States. Through many of his more suspect actions on her behalf, he has managed to make the story once more about HIM and not her -- because bad attention is better than no attention at all.

I said after South Carolina that I have no doubt that, if Hillary were elected President, Bill would find someway -- probably through an affair -- to make it all about him again and further undermine his wife.

63. So I guess this means Hillary ISN'T ready at 3AM to answer the red phone??
"But there was a lot of fulminating because Hillary, one time late at night when she was exhausted, misstated and immediately apologized for it, what happened to her in Bosnia in 1995".

More like 3 or 4 times Bill but hey its only the truth, right Bill???
