Gallup: Obama gets a little daylight on McCain.
Obama leads McCain 46-43. He still has a significant lead on Clinton.

10. According to his calculations.. for this poll to be true, blacks must amount to some 30% of the
population (quick guesstimate)

2. Once we sort out the primary, I am confident Obama will regain that once 10-point lead on McSame
... and soar!! I am chomping at the bit for Obama to throw down with McSame.

18. It's quite reasonable to believe that BOTH Obama's and Clinton's numbers vs. McCain
... suffer from "gamesmanship" responses of the supporters of the opposing candidate claiming some intention to vote McCain should the other be nominated. I have very little doubt this is the case, just as I have little doubt that such clams are overblown in both cases ... perhaps one more than the other.

So, we not only have the general impressions problem (due merely to the fact that McCain is in GE mode) among those not obsessively focused on politics, we have the problem of primary gamesmanship (or zeal).

Thus, I take all hypothetical head-on-head polls with about 4-6% grains of salt.

22. Just a thought...
Where all the big losers' polls at about this period? Goldwater, Dole, Mondale. Of course they were dealing with incumbents. Perot was very big until the Dem Convention and then debates. He was another "tough talking independent maverick". Nixon was likely the odds on favorite at this time while the Dems were still heading toward a brokered convention. Now that was a close open election.

There are periods of advantage, of bounce, of tightening, of parties falling in line, of independents FINALLY making up their minds. There are the debates although as softly structured there are few upsets there anymore. That would take the presence of a third party nemesis at least.

The media is pimping the contest and the myth of McCain at present, but I see an awe(despair) and begrudging admission that the Dems will win. That is more than a fine start. A revisiting of the Goldwater nuke ad would actually be fair and accurate this time.

6. Obama: 15 straight days of 49% or more... Clinton: 20 straight days of 46% or less...

The trend-lines are hardening.... and Hillary is still toast.

Just wait until our stuff is settled. You'll see the numbers change for the better.
