Hillary Clinton supported a credit-card based Bankruptcy bill - "*I* am out of touch?"

It took McCain three tries to realize there was a housing crisis- *I* am out of touch?

I got news for people -- they are. Their jobs all went offshore.

19. He said how hard things are, politicians have been promising help for decades and nothing happens so
Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 07:40 PM by Pirate Smile
people vote on other issues because they don't believe the economic promises of politicians. They vote on guns or gay marriage. They take refuge in their faith and families because they are the only things that they can count on. He said People are bitter. Clinton and McCain attacking him for saying people are bitter and then calling him out of touch. People are bitter and frustrated. He knows what is going on in Penn, IN, IL ... Clinton voted for a bankruptcy bill that would have made it harder for people to get relief. It took McCain three times to figure out that there really is a mortgage crisis - and they call him (Obama) out of touch!

20. He made a good response to the issue at a rally in Indiana.
He said some people are, of course, frustrated and bitter because they have heard promises from candidates which never are fulfilled. So, he said, people gravitate to issues like guns, gay marriage etc. out of their frustration and bitterness.

He went on to say McCain and Clinton call him out of touch but McCain took 3 tries to get interested in the mortgage crisis and Clinton voted for the credit card interest bill which hurt a lot of people.

He got a huge ovation. Remains to be seen how big an issue this becomes. I don't think the media and the Clintons will let it go.

"of course they're bitter, of course they're frustrated"
"nobody is looking out for you, nobody is thinking about you."

"it took John McCain 3 tries to notice that the foreclosure crisis is a problem
and he says I'm out of touch".

Hitting Clinton on Bankruptcy bill - "and I'M out of touch?"

People are angry and bitter and frustrated and thats why I'm running.

76. Obama is excellent at that. Someone finally talks honestly but with pointed
elbows and with subtlety and directness at the same time that would make Lakoff proud. And he does it with accessible words and sentences that everyone can relate to.

I can't wait till he is able to set his sights on the GOP record over the last 7 years. FINALLY maybe someone will reach into the memory hole and weave the pieces of the GOP story together to create a true overall image of hypocrisy, arrogance, illegality, death, corporatism, corruption, misinformation, and deception. The story has been just sitting there waiting for someone...a journalist, a pundit, a politician, to expose these people. Someone has to say "Are you kidding me? Let's see if I have this straight.....here's what has happened over the last 7 years....."

The entire litany of misdeeds must be discussed as a whole to overcome the outrage fatigue that we all have. And I think that not only does Obama know how to do it -- and here's the key piece -- he is willing to do it.

I guess she thinks the people are just a bunch of hicks who should kiss her ass. talk about elitist!

she can't even balance the budget of her campaign--she'd rather give the money to Penn to pay off people to support the trade deal with Colombia that she's lied about being opposed to.

your meme of "snob" is going to go absolutely nowhere. just like the idiotic "pots and pans protest" today.

45. MY ROUGH TRANSCRIPT >
When I talk with people there is frustration and there is anger and there is bitterness. I was in SF talking to a group at a fundraiser, and someone asked me, "how are you going to get votes in PA, we heard it's hard for working class people to get behind your campaign."

They've seen their jobs shipped overseas, their economies collapse, they've lost their jobs, they've lost their healthcare, and of course they're bitter, of course they're frustrated - you would be too! In fact many of you are! We've seen the same thing happen in Decatur, the same thing happen in ___, because the same thing's happening to YOU, and (people have given up on getting any help from Washington - paraphrased, missed that part) so you see them voting on guns, on the right to bear arms, the right to gay marriage, they vote on their faith issues, they (vote on these issues because they've lost faith in getting any change on the economic issues - paraphrase).

Now here's what's rich. Sen. Clinton says, "I don't think people are biitter in PA, Barack's being condescending," McCain says "he's out of touch," Out of touch? It took him (months to notice that people were losing their homes, and he says I'm out of touch? - paraphrase).

Sen Clinton voted for a credit card sponsored bankruptcy bill after taking money from financial services industry and she thinks I'm out of touch? No, I'm in touch. People are angry, they're bitter, they're frustrated and they want to see a change ion Washington. That's why you're here, because you want to see change. That's what this campaign is about. We said we're not going to take PAC money, we're not gong to take lobbyist money. How did we do it? We did it with you, (in small donations). And that's why you know I'm accountable to you.

52.  I thinks this proves
That smart response is a lot better than rapid response.

Obama says that people are bitter about the economic situation in the US, which they most certainly are, and Clinton about as fast as possible comes out with, everything's fine, nothing to see here, don't worry, be happy, and it makes her look foolish.

It would make her look foolish, if she was just the normal rich politician, but even more foolish now that we know she's the $109 million dollar woman.

79. Yes, I'm very interested
And Barack Obama danced and diverted around his comments like I knew he would.

69. Here you go, sound-biter
This was just added to the Huffington Post article that started this mess:

OBAMA: So, it depends on where you are, but I think it's fair to say that the places where we are going to have to do the most work are the places where people are most cynical about government. The people are mis-appre...they're misunderstanding why the demographics in our, in this contest have broken out as they are. Because everybody just ascribes it to 'white working-class don't wanna work -- don't wanna vote for the black guy.' That's...there were intimations of that in an article in the Sunday New York Times today - kind of implies that it's sort of a race thing.

Here's how it is: in a lot of these communities in big industrial states like Ohio and Pennsylvania, people have been beaten down so long. They feel so betrayed by government that when they hear a pitch that is premised on not being cynical about government, then a part of them just doesn't buy it. And when it's delivered by -- it's true that when it's delivered by a 46-year-old black man named Barack Obama, then that adds another layer of skepticism.

But -- so the questions you're most likely to get about me, 'Well, what is this guy going to do for me? What is the concrete thing?' What they wanna hear is -- so, we'll give you talking points about what we're proposing -- to close tax loopholes, you know, roll back the tax cuts for the top 1 percent. Obama's gonna give tax breaks to middle-class folks and we're gonna provide health care for every American.

But the truth is, is that, our challenge is to get people persuaded that we can make progress when there's not evidence of that in their daily lives. You go into some of these small towns in Pennsylvania, and like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them. And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not. And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Um, now these are in some communities, you know. I think what you'll find is, is that people of every background -- there are gonna be a mix of people, you can go in the toughest neighborhoods, you know working-class lunch-pail folks, you'll find Obama enthusiasts. And you can go into places where you think I'd be very strong and people will just be skeptical. The important thing is that you show up and you're doing what you're doing.

72. I have never seen a candidate improve like fine wine every day with no end in sight
Meanwhile the other candidates whine themselves out of contention.

74. Obama Lied to the American People - Hillary never voted for the bankruptcy bill !!!!
Hillary Clinton never voted for the Brankruptcy Bill of 2005. Hillary Clinton was the sole Senator not voting on the bill, due to the fact that Bill Clinton had heart surgery that day.

From Senator Clinton's official statement on the bill:

This bankruptcy bill fundamentally fails to accord with the traditional purposes of bankruptcy, which recognize that we are all better off when hard-working people who have suffered financial catastrophe get a "fresh start" and a second chance to become productive and contributing members of society. With the passage of this legislation, which makes obtaining this fresh start more expensive and more difficult, we are ensuring that many responsible Americans will continue to be buried under mountains of debt, and unable to take back control and responsibility for their lives.

In the days before S.256 was finally brought to the floor Senator Clinton voted for every amendment which would have added consumer protections to the bankruptcy bill. Amendments which were repeatedly rejected by both the Republican majority and far too many Democrats. She even voted against cloture in an attempt to keep the final bill from coming to a vote at all.

Several commentors correctly noted that Hillary Clinton supported the earlier bill (although she voted for amendments adding consumer protections in that bill as well). She wasn't the only Democrat to change her position (voting for the 2001 bill and against the 2005 bill) and I'm not qualified to compare the differences between them.

However, several articles have discussed her change of position, including this recent article in the NYTimes.

For what it's worth, Democratic Senators Akaka, Cantwell, Dorgan, Feinstein, Leahy, Levin, Lieberman, Mikulski, Murray, Nelson (Fl), Schumer and Wyden switched in the same direction as Clinton. John Edwards, who also voted for the 2001 bill, suggested he would have switched his vote as well.

75. It won't matter. The damn broadcast media will stay with this "small town" stuff
until the GE. I'm sure Fox "News" will cover it 24/7 for months. The broadcast media will decide who will win the GE.
