ROUGH TRANSCRIPT >>> of Obama slam dunk by Stephanie!

Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 08:46 PM by Stephanie
When I talk with people there is frustration and there is anger and there is bitterness. I was in SF talking to a group at a fundraiser, and someone asked me, "how are you going to get votes in PA, we heard it's hard for working class people to get behind your campaign."

They've seen their jobs shipped overseas, their economies collapse, they've lost their jobs, they've lost their healthcare, and of course they're bitter, of course they're frustrated - you would be too! In fact many of you are! We've seen the same thing happen in Decatur, the same thing happen in ___, because the same thing's happening to YOU, and (people have given up on getting any help from Washington - paraphrased, missed that part) so you see them voting on guns, on the right to bear arms, the right to gay marriage, they vote on their faith issues, they (vote on these issues because they've lost faith in getting any change on the economic issues - paraphrase).

Now here's what's rich. Sen. Clinton says, "I don't think people are biitter in PA, Barack's being condescending," McCain says "he's out of touch," Out of touch? It took him (months to notice that people were losing their homes, and he says I'm out of touch? - paraphrase).

Sen Clinton voted for a credit card sponsored bankruptcy bill after taking money from financial services industry and she thinks I'm out of touch? No, I'm in touch. People are angry, they're bitter, they're frustrated and they want to see a change ion Washington. That's why you're here, because you want to see change. That's what this campaign is about. We said we're not going to take PAC money, we're not gong to take lobbyist money. How did we do it? We did it with you, (in small donations). And that's why you know I'm accountable to you.

To paraphrase Geraldine Ferraro, if it wasn't for her being an ex-president's wife, she would have no chance.

11. Hillary has behaved like a jerk
and these silly phrase twists don't serve her very well at all.
I amazed at how amateurish and gimmicky the Clinton
campaign has gotten at times. I thought they would know
better, but instead they are proven to be horribly out of step.
Too bad.

16. Obama Lied to the American People - Hillary never voted for the bankruptcy bill !!!!
Hillary Clinton never voted for the Brankruptcy Bill of 2005. Hillary Clinton was the sole Senator not voting on the bill, because that day Bill Clinton had heart surgery

From Senator Clinton's official statement on the bill:

This bankruptcy bill fundamentally fails to accord with the traditional purposes of bankruptcy, which recognize that we are all better off when hard-working people who have suffered financial catastrophe get a "fresh start" and a second chance to become productive and contributing members of society. With the passage of this legislation, which makes obtaining this fresh start more expensive and more difficult, we are ensuring that many responsible Americans will continue to be buried under mountains of debt, and unable to take back control and responsibility for their lives.

In the days before S.256 was finally brought to the floor Senator Clinton voted for every amendment which would have added consumer protections to the bankruptcy bill. Amendments which were repeatedly rejected by both the Republican majority and far too many Democrats. She even voted against cloture in an attempt to keep the final bill from coming to a vote at all.

Several commentors correctly noted that Hillary Clinton supported the earlier bill (although she voted for amendments adding consumer protections in that bill as well). She wasn't the only Democrat to change her position (voting for the 2001 bill and against the 2005 bill) and I'm not qualified to compare the differences between them.

However, several articles have discussed her change of position, including this recent article in the NYTimes.

For what it's worth, Democratic Senators Akaka, Cantwell, Dorgan, Feinstein, Leahy, Levin, Lieberman, Mikulski, Murray, Nelson (Fl), Schumer and Wyden switched in the same direction as Clinton. John Edwards, who also voted for the 2001 bill, suggested he would have switched his vote as well.

17. she voted FOR it in 2001....
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/08/clinton-and-the-bankruptcy-law/

As first lady, Mrs. Clinton worked against the bill. She helped kill one version of it, then another version passed, which her husband vetoed. As a senator, in 2001, she voted for it, but it did not pass. When it came up again in 2005, she missed the vote because her husband was in the hospital, although she indicated she would have opposed it.

Edited on Fri Apr-11-08 08:45 PM by supporter77
http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/08/08/clinton-and-the-bankruptcy-law/

Explaining Senator Clinton’s support for the bill in 2001, Phil Singer, a campaign spokesman, said, “She helped forge a compromise in the 2001 bill intended to ensure that custodial parents got child custody payments.” She opposed the bill later, he said, because “unfortunately, that provision was stripped from the 2005 legislation

29. It passed both houses but with the change from Republican to Democrat
in the Senate and 911, which reset priorities, there was never a conference bill passed in both Houses - so it was never sent to the President.

26. That statement hurts her not helps her
The Bankruptcy bill is awful and has had enormous bad affects - this is saying she would have voted for the 2005 bill had they dealt with custodial payments - In one of the debates she said she was glad the 2001 bill didn't become law - so I think she would disagree with her spokesman's answer.

31. She worked with Republicans on it and was one of 36 Democrats who helped it pass the Senate
saying it had been improved from when she opposed it

Oh hey...can she work with the Republicans ?

Still, this version was vigorously opposed by consumer groups and unions, and ultimately did not become law.
When the bill came up again in 2005, Clinton missed the vote. She did vote against a procedural motion involving the bill and said that had she been present, she would have voted against the bill itself.

34. Nice summary
Bill Clinton was in the hospital at the time of the 2005 vote with follow up surgery to his heart surgery. The earlier cloture vote (where she voted against cloture) was the Democrats only chance and she was on the right side then.

That still doesn't excuse 2001.

(My point was that Singer doesn't help her because she did say that she came to see the 2001 bill as bad and was happy it wasn't law - compromise or not.)

38. Not only am I bitter, I'm in pain. Every single day.
I can't afford health insurance and can't afford to get a torn muscle treated. Damn right I'm bitter. Our income has decreased every year over the last 8. Damn right I'm bitter. I see people picking returnable cans off the side of the highway and lining up at the machine in the lobby at the grocery store to turn them in. It's not a hobby for them. It's not an eco-friendly thing. It's a trying to buy a few gallons of heating oil thing. People are trying their hardest to survive and Hillary judging anyone is a laugh. She lives in a world where husbands make a half million dollars for a speech. Barack was not being condescending, he was being honest. If he has a fault, it might be analyzing things in full view of the world, not behind closed doors. What he said was true - and there were no snipers involved.
