Some of you never learn.
You just can't resist. First Wright-gate was going to be the end of Obama's candidacy. According to you folks, he couldn't possibly survive! You were jubilant about it. Now we have bitter-gate.
And you're doing the same old song and dance. You'd think you'd learn not to underestimate Senator Obama, but I guess desperation blunts the learning curve, and hope springs eternal in the hearts of Senator Clinton's supporters.

Obama is good at crisis management, even if the crisis is a manufactured one. And though you may hate it, he's got a good slug of political teflon in his make up.

This may or may not hurt him in PA, but it won't sink him. And he'll handle himself with dignity and a degree of integrity. That's more than can be said for Senator Clinton, alas, who has very little dignity left. I'm not so sure that her appetite to exploit this won't backfire. Her eagerness to play throw the kitchen sink hasn't been such a resounding success, and she just isn't very subtle.

So we'll see what the upshot to this thing is, but you really should hold off on the celebrating: Wright was a lot more serious than this, and despite your fervent wishes, Obama survived it.

33. "First Wright-gate was going to be the end of Obama's candidacy."
Actually, it was Rezko-gate that was supposed to torpedo the candidacy, which was to happen the very day the trial started! Every Clinton supporter under the sun on DU invoked "Rezko Rezko Rezko" and pinky-swore promised and threatened that this was it. This would be the end. That trial started on March 3. Fast-forward to April 12 and :boring:!!

The reality is that someone who would be charged to lead the country with the largest economy in the world ain't gonna have it easy. There will be crises after crises and mini-crises after mini-crises. There is no walk in the park when heading up any entity. Over-analyzing the candidates' discourse and take on the American public provides a smokescreen to acknowleging that BOTH political parties ARE AT FAULT for the state of the U.S. Seriously. The fact that "impeachment is off the table" allowing the criminal cabal free reign and the lack of the Democratic Party's attempts to block repuke crap for 6 years before retaking Congress, is as much at fault as the repukes themselves.

The Democratic Party truly needs to be remade and is currently being challenged and disassembled before our eyes. Doing such is painful and that is being reflected on boards like this. As has been mentioned by some posters, we are fighting for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party and candidates like Obama are putting trial balloons out there that will be useful for developing strategy, not just at the highest levels, but at the state and local levels when it comes to rebuilding the Party from the ground up. The Party IS broken and it needs to be fixed and the sooner we get to it, the better for the long term.

the "he's a Muslim look at his clothes" thing.

the "he attended a Madrassa" thing.

the Louis Farakkhan thing.

the plagarism in his speech thing.

the Michelle is proud of America for the first time thing.

various Clintonian attacks that never stuck: the healthcare pamphlet ("shame on you, Barack Obama!"), "Just Words", "Fairy Tale", "Jesse Jackson also won South Carolina", false outrage over him saying she was "likeable enough", their saying he wasn't experienced enough--there must be more that I can't remember right now. They keep throwing it and he keeps batting it back at them.

Kitchen sink (industrial size) is what has happened. The repukes haven't had to do anything - except that McLame did use a snippet of Bill's big mouth talking to another big-mouther Baba Wawa, where Bill heartily endoses McLame as the "most electable". McLame stuck that doozy video right on the front page of his website too.

34. Bitter is as bitter does - and no one does bitter better than HRC
Bill has given her years' worth of reasons to be bitter - the longer she stays with him, the deeper that bitterness eats away at her, under that plastered on exaggerated smile. She's so deep in her own denial of bitterness, I guess she can't see it in anyone else. And her supporters haven't seemed too happy of late either.

36. when I first heard of this on Tweety last night,
I thought, hm, interesting; I wonder how he's going to turn this one around (they had given me the twisted spun version so it seemed worse than it actually turned out to be, once I read the whole context). I didn't panic, didn't feel nervous. I just knew he'd do something good with it.

So much so, that he may have been just waiting for a chance to make a statement like this. It's a way to bring up the festering anger the working class has had for some time. Bring it to the light of day, force people to look at it, and offer hope for change. It's great politics, if he did it on purpose. If not, he's still using it to best advantage.

Like I said, I never had a moment of fear. He's got what it takes to handle incoming fire.

I know exactly what he's talking about. The economic insecurity is a breeding ground for fear--fear of a lot of things: immigrants, for example. People who are not like you (minorities, gays, what have you). They are drawn to socially conservative ideas because of fear.

43. I remember some news special a long time ago
I think on CBS, where they showed a snippet of a chronically unemployed white woman who had just received a welfare check, standing on the porch of her shack of a house, and insisting that the reason for the faltering economy was because of "blacks on welfare". This of course, was before hispanic immigrants became the "in thing" for placing blame.

These sorts of people truly do NOT have anything else to cling to but the narrow issues. They fully deny what has become of them as they have sadly lost all control of their lives - or shall we say, they have stopped trying to regain control because their past efforts are more often than not rewarded with nothing. The landslide for Reagan in 1980 that embraced "trickle down" theory resulted in their being "pissed on" and now left to save face. How they did this was by going into denial and focusing on nonsensical wedge issues in order to eke some sort of "win" out of their efforts. "Better something than nothing at all". Of course this mentality further helped to destroy not only themselves but so many others as a result. To this day, and every single day, I utter the same exasperated statement that asks how these people can continue to "pull that Republican lever".

The problem that I have is that we (editorial "we") are falling into a trap of putting too high an expectation on what is supposed to be a CO-EQUAL branch of our tricameral government. There is NO WAY that the President can solely fix all the problems of the U.S. unilaterally. Sadly, we are setting ourselves up for future failure if we don't somehow diffuse this notion. We as Democrats must fight to change the Congress and the SCOTUS as well in order to help finally break the logjam and allow for some meaningful change to occur. Otherwise, in 2012, we'll be right back where we started.

Somehow, some way, there needs to be some major, tangible benefit that "the public" can receive fairly quickly in exchange for their efforts. Ironically, Bushco's nonsense "rebate check" was an attempt at doing just that. Cake for the lemmings. It will be interesting if someone can come up with something from the Democratic Party that will be a bit more meaningful and not take many many years to provide given the egregious nature of the economy at this point.

Wisconsin Obama in a statistical dead heat with McCain, Hillary behind by double digits.
Montana Obama within striking distance; Hillary behind by 18-points.

Though I still won't start a thread like you, just to spew.

52. Bottom line: there are a lot of bitter, frustrated and angry Americans who totally agree with him.
This, like all of the other faux-controversies will backfire on Clinton and McCain.

60. I love how the Hillary fans waver between feigning outrage and "concern"
They can't seem to decide whether or not to be really upset and offended by whatever the latest fauxtrage is. It's either that or "I know what he meant but what will the GOP do with it?"

66. There is no cause to celebrate whenever a solid Democrat faces problems
And I consider both Clinton and Obama to be solid Democrats. And you may well be right cali, Obama has risen to the occasion before, but in the realm of politics this is not a manufactured crisis, it is a self inflicted one, but one from which Obama may very well fully heal.

These are them moments primary campaigns are made of. Usually in a primary, and I think this one fits the norm, voters are asked to chose between two or more strong candidates within the same Party. Part of what makes a candidate "Strong" is their ability to avoid self inflicted wounds, but more important than that is their ability to recover quickly from any and all wounds no matter what the origin.

Had Obama steam rolled to a relatively quick and easy victory after Iowa, blowing Clinton away in NH and beating her in California to finish her chances off, I would have felt uneasy about counting on Obama to hold up under the storms of the General Election campaign against the Republicans. If Obama emerges from this extended primary season as our nominee, after all that both he and Clinton have had to go through, I will have sufficient confidence in him as our candidate to be confident of our victory in November.

We have seen what happens when an embarrassing revelation comes out regarding Obama; his pastor's controversial comments. Now we will see what happens when Obama himself makes an inadvertently controversial comments. These things happen to all politicians in the withering glare of the national spotlight. The most important thing to know is how well they hold up under it.

70. First?
Snub gate was before Wright gate. I heard say that was the end for Obama. Rezco was before Wrightgate. That was supposed to torpedo him. Hell. He is black gate and He is democratic gate came before it all, those were supposed to keep him out of even the senate, much less the presidency.

It must kill his opponents that he shrugs off all of their antiquated "death blows". Its what happens when you attack a brick wall with a rusty pocket knife.

No one is really jubilant about Obama's mistake. And if the people on DU had any smarts they'd stop using the word "bitter" because they are repeating and compounding the mistake.

87. If it makes you feel better,
I'll agree that Hillary has a lot of negatives. The republicans have used all their ammo against her. They've made sure everyone in the U.S. knows everything negative about her that there is to know in their endless vendetta to destroy Bill Clinton.

Obama also has negatives, one of which he did to himself and if he gets the nomination the republicans are going to pull out all the dirt they've already collected on him. Think back to Vince Foster, Ron Brown, Travelgate, and all the other scandals and lies they invented out of whole cloth because that's what is going to happen to whoever we nominate.

86. How would I, an anonymous internet poster, "alienate[sic] half the party"?
The problem is that the Clintons (and yes they are a 2-fer) have alienated the nation, not just those in the Democratic Party.

Obama has consistently been shown to attract indies and dissatisfied repukes, and I live near the border of a county full of them. It is wonderous to see them with Obama signs on their lawns. Who would have ever thought? And these are not Limpball repukes attempting to skew the results of the primary here because why bother with the effort of putting out lawn signs if you're only going to vote and then change back and vote repuke in the GE? No, these people are serious.

You tend not to give a shit about stuff like this.

Further proof that SHE is the out-of-touch elitist.

She doesn't get it. That should be the campaign slogan.
