What did obama mean? Rick Santorum.
He wants partial- privatization of social security, doesnt believe a right to privacy exists under the constitution, and generally supports republican economic stands that make you think how does this guy get elected?

Yet he fanned issues like illegal immigration and gay marriage to his benefit.

1. Rick
Got trounced by a very angry electorate in 2006.

Rick pretended to be a moderate his first run...than he showed his true colors and the state of PA vomitted him out.

Thank God for Bob Casey

46. Next time, leave them a steaming pile of dog crap on theirs.
When they ask what that's all about, just tell them you were returning the favor -- then ask them if they had the chance to look it over, and what their opinions on it were.

2. Why do we always have to play WORM?
Even if we accept the common Obama apologist explanation he is still saying these people are suckers who can't make intelligent decisions in the voting booth. Good luck with that in the general election...

6. newsflash: right wing politicians have used fear of illegals and the destruction of mariage by gay..
people as a wedge issue. If a person thinks economically both politicians wont do jack squat, but this republican guy will at least do what he says on the wedge issues, that person might be more tempted to vote republican. You want to talk about suckers, talk about those who voted for war against iraq. At least the working people of pennsylvania see the score plain as day, a corrupt system set up to help those better off first and foremost.

after sniper gate you should know that. Nowhere did obama even hint penn state voters were stupid. He did hint they were so fed up with the economic system that maybe they voted for the republican anti gay anti immigration candidate because at least in those areas they could benefit (more secure job, more secure family).

im saying they are the ones fanning these types of issues to get elected. I have a good secure job, so i dont really give a shit about illegal immigration. If i lost my nice job or was scared of losing it, you bet your ass illegal immigration would become more important to me.

19. Read "What's the Matter with Kansas?"
...then read the entire transcript of his talk and you will understand exactly what he was saying.

Not only was it not elitist, his statements were accurate. The American worker has been given little reason to trust either party on economic issues of importance. Bridges fall, roads crack, schools deteriorate and jobs disappear while politicians of every stripe rush to feed from the corporate trough.

All that's left is frustration, anger and cynicism. If the only thing left to vote "for" is the hot-button issue of your choice, you go for it. It may not be empowerment, but it's a facsimile.

im saying obamas comments in this case were right on the money. RW politicians play on peoples cynicism with the political system and and use fear of things like illegals and gay mariage (and terrorism, iran, etc, etc) or their benefit. and a lot of americans from all walks of life accept those RW arguements.

43. Meh.
I was hoping for a more thoughtful answer. Thomas Franks isn't running. OK. Obama is, and he's speaking to the heart of the problem. People can and will vote in their economic interest IF they are given a reason to believe things will change for the better.

Today Obama said point-blank that the tax-cuts for the wealthiest one percent will end when he becomes President, and that the middle-class will at last get some relief. If that message gets through the chaff of this latest manufactured outrage he will continue to pull votes from Clinton.

because they think the economic political system is fucked anyways. So maybe they give the republican arguement a whirl. (illegals putting my job at risk? gay marriage destroying that institution? sure, ok.) Its all about lack of faith in the political process.

39. 2 points. Casey is pro-life, so that was a compromise to get Santorum voters.
Casey rode on his Father's name to a great degree. It's kind of like a Kennedy running for office in MA.

Thus.
I am hesitant to see Casey's win is not necessarily a complete repudiation of Santorum's politics.

47. If you really look back on PA politics and the Caseys
Getting into office was actually not easy for either. They ran and lost a number of elections before they finally got their prize.

Casey Sr. ran 3 times before he got the governorship.

Casey Jr. slid into politics quietly via a state-wide Auditor General position and lost the gubernatorial primary to Rendell. But then thanks to Santorum's little trip down to Florida, Jr. was a shoo-in. IMHO, the Terry Schiavo case WAS the last straw and undoing of Rick Santorum. Rick Santorum was shown to be no John Heinz. For Jr., it was all in being at the right place at the right time!
