Frustrated Clinton Supporters Cling to Sexism and Homophobia |
|
Like Obama, I am not talking about any group as whole, but targeting a specific set of people who have lost a sense of perspective on the larger issues and instead develop irrational, distortedly emotional defense mechanisms to explain their deeper frustrations.
There is a distinct handful of Clinton supporters that refuse to believe that someone could have a legitimate problem with Clinton's candidacy. In fact, I would venture that most opposition to Clinton stems from her sense of militarism that goes far beyond her unapologetic vote for the IWR. Backing Chalabi, demanding anti-terrorism nukes "on the table," sabre-rattling with Iran, referring to the rise in suicide bombers as a sign of progress, and much more have made her a thoroughly unpalatable candidate in my eyes.
Again, I believe that many are like myself and had longed for a Hillary Clinton presidency until she deeply disappointed us with her response to the post-9/11 atmosphere. The fact that she has run a particularly nasty campaign hasn't helped, either.
And yet, there continues to be a strong showing of DU folk who insist that we (and the media) are uninspired because we hate women in power and the power of women. I don't doubt that there are people that oppose Obama because he is black and I don't doubt that people distrust Clinton because she is a woman. But these people are decidedly a small, small minority - especially among Democrats.
Furthermore, there are a handful of people who spent months of their lives reminding us that Donnie McClurkin is a jackass. We know he is a jerkass and we wish that Obama hadn't associated himself with such a guy. Politics makes for lousy bedfellows, and Obama is a politician not a saint. But suggesting that Obama hates gays or even that he would be less committed to helping gays has nothing to do with logic or evidence.
I am sorry if you feel I am belittling people by suggesting that their posts have less to do with Obama and more to do with their own personal stories. That may make some people uncomfortable thinking about it, or it may make me seem like a jerkass. But I have largely kept silent on these threads for many months and I have a deep sense that it is time to cut the bullshit.
Ps - Before you bother, I know that there are people who claim racism where there is none, and I know that some Obama supporters who say dumb things. Once more, let's keep in mind that we are talking about a vocal minority of people.

2. If you don't think there's a lot of homophobia at DU |
|
I have a bridge to sell you.
And my problems with Obama have far more to do with the premise of his candidacy (bipartisan olive branch offering) than with his ill conceived gospel tour.

5. Why do people use homophobia to describe anyone who isn't in favor of gay rights? |
|
Perhaps if we all had a greater handle on the meanings of the terms we throw at people, we wouldn't make so many unsympathetic to our rights. PHOBIA means fear, I don't know any homosexually bigoted arseholes that are afraid of me or you or any other person whose sexual tastes are outside of the accepted monogamous heterosexual guidelines.

3. More distortions and twists. |
|
I don't believe that anyone has said the WHOLE reason for the fact that Clinton is behind is due to sexism.
But, to deny that sexism is a part of it, is denying reality. We only need to look at the DU posts to confirm that.
And frankly the use of the historically-sexist terms used for generations to minimize women and keep them home bare-foot and pregnant, "irrational" "emotional," is not helping your argument.

When a candidate LIES about something as serious as ducking and running from sniper fire to enhance their bona-fides, as well as NAFTA, IWR, and now the Columbia trade deal, my LIE-a-phobia makes me look to the other candidate. It has nothing to do with her gender, it's her character that is flawed.

6. Pretty Broad Brush you are painting with there. Sort of Right Wing TP's |

in a screed ...it would seem. What's the point of this post? Calling out DU'ers who do feel the Media has made sexist remarks against Hillary and have documented them? Trying to say there aren't legitimate gender issues to discuss in this Primary? Who made "you" the judge of the worth of "personal stories?"
Quote from you:
