5 PA Mayors Response to Obama's comment: OBAMA’S BITTER TASTE OF HIS OWN WORDS

April 12, 2008 5:30 PM

Chris Doherty, the mayor of Scranton, said: “I can tell you in Scranton and Northeast Pennsylvania, we’re optimistic. We’ve seen over 400,000 million invested in our city over the last seven years and we’re doing real well. It’s disappointing that Sen. Obama doesn’t realize that. He’s spent some time here and you could see the changes in our state and how well we are doing.

“As to people in our area turning to guns or to God or the perception that things are bad, the truth is what the governor said, people in Northeastern Pennsylvania like to hunt,’’ he said. “We worship our God regardless of our religion and that doesn’t happen in bad times necessarily, it happens as part of who we are, as people from Northeastern Pennsylvania. That tradition was passed down to us from our parents, from our grandparents, people in Pennsylvania have been here for three to four generations.

Robert Lucas, mayor of Sharon, Pa.: “The furthest thing from the truth is that we are bitter. To say that we cling to our religion and guns because of that – I can’t understand that. In this small city of 15,000, we have over 35 churches. Those churches weren’t built because we’re bitter and we don’t go to church because we are bitter.

“We don’t go up to the mountains to hunt because we are bitter. We’re concerned that seven years of Bush has really hurt us.’’

John Callahan, mayor of Bethlehem, Pa.: “We have lost thousands of high-paying blue collar, family-sustaining jobs. But we’re still here and we’re still fighting to make our cities and our neighborhoods strong.

Tom Leighton, mayor of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.: “Today’s the first day of fishing, and fishing and hunting brings families together. It allows time for fathers to spend time with their children. On top of other things that go on, whether it’s soccer or going to church, the people of Wilkes-Barre and the surrounding community have a strong faith and attend mass and their congregation daily.

The people of Wilkes-Barre “are not bitter,’’ the mayor said. “They are very optimistic about the future… We need leadership that is going to help us improve things here, not put us down.

Steve Reed, mayor of Harrisburg, Pa.: “We happen to like our small town values. We think they’re the bedrock of the American values that have built this nation and the people of our towns embrace their religions out of faith, not out of bitterness or frustration. I have found our small town citizens to be decent. They are hardworking. They are friendly. They are giving. They are caring. They are patriotic.

“They don’t deserve to be categorized as they were in the remarks made out in California,’’ he said. “It’s a very unfortunate stereotype of the citizens of our towns in this state, and in every state across the nation, to have them unfairly categorized as they were. Frankly, the remarks of Sen. Obama lacked judgment. They lack understanding.

“Frankly the remarks are condescending, they are negative, they are hurtful.’’

1. Wow
The outrage from people who endorsed Hillary before the comment was made. I bet the Mayors who endorsed Barack understand what he was trying to say.

This thing is so Fucking Stupid. So are the games both sides are playing with it.

These tactics must stop. The personal attacks and presuming to tell us Obama's point of view, labeling him an "elitist" and aligning herself with McCain. She is resorting to schoolyard "yo momma" infighting and it is beneath her.

81. What Obama said was true and much of what he said
members of my spouse's bargaining units told him repeatedly to explain why they had voted against their own economic interest. Time and again Republican candidates were able to manipulate blue collar voters who had lost the belief that they could trust in any of the economic promises Democrats made to them.

I think it is pathetic the way Clinton supports have been twisting what is an unfortunate truth that we need to confront. If we don't those "Reagan Democrats" will likely vote Republican again in 2008.

But I am actually from Tallahassee florida...a red state yes but I am democrat through and through...and no I am not enthralled by Obama...he is a good speaker but that is all he is. A good talker. He is not experienced enough...My nonsupport for Obama does not come from any dislike of him or anything he represents...only that we need experience in the White House....our current president has showned how inadequate and lacking in experience he is....we NEED experience. Not good rhetoric.

61. No but here is what I typed
today on CNN and I was impressed with Hillary...she was charming, funny, inspiring, full of hope for the future...Her impersonation was hilarious. I have seen speaches of Obama and this is the first time I had time to watch her campaign and I felt a stir in my heart. A message of hope should encourage people about the good qualities still in their life not what they are bitter about. Everyone knows this country is on the wrong track and it needs change, but I think a message about hope should lift a person up and show them that they still have integrity and dreams and hopes..not despairs, frustrations, antipaty, and anti this and anti that. She was very personal when talking about that company...I cant recall its name...which had to close in Valparaiso and the jobs were outsourced to China. I smiled when I saw that sign "Real me for Hillary".

I turned on the tv to cnn, which despite what many may think, is the BEST show on tv for news, and I saw that live broadcast I quietly sat down and watched it. I was glued to my seat. I am normally surfing the internet for many hours and down watch much television, but today I am glad I did. So what if she lied or misspoke or have a husband who cant keep his mouth shut. It is the issues that are important to me. What she is going to do for people like me that is important to me. I have grown up my entire life believing all politicians lie and so I have to vote for one who lies not the least but lies about the unimportant things. Back in 2004 there was something about Kerry I could not trust. I did not like Bush and there was no way this self respecting democrat would vote for him. But Kerry....I always trust my instincts about people and they are never wrong and my instincts about Hillary is that she will bring about change. She will bring back jobs to America. She has America first in her heart. She will fight for free health care for everyone. She will do everything she sets out in her campaign promise to do. I was sadden those many years ago when she was stopped cold by the republicans on universal health care, but it will not happen this time. Democrats have the edge in Congress this year.

I would like to contribute to her campign. I would like to donate the maximum of 2300 dollars but you see...I am one of those guys Obama was talking about that lost their job and I am not bitter...I dont have a gun...I cling to religion because the Bible is the best source of instruction on the way to live your life...and I dont hate immigrants...I am not frustrated...I am not bitter...But I cant make that donation because I am poor. I am unemployed. My dreams of the job I wanted---Network Administrator--was crushed on 911. The stock on technology burst and there were massive layoffs. It just wasn't the time I suppose. So I still had my hope...Not bitterness and Hillary puts winds underneath the wings of my hope. Hillary 08'

80. You know...
Obama supporter response to my pose has been...nonexistant...Could it be they have nothing to say to invalidate my feelings? Of to attack me would shame them to insignificance. Yes my post was heart felt and thank you for your reply. There is nothing more powerful than words and ideas from the heart.

to see how many others posted the same thread. Or is it just that you felt the other topics weren't getting kicked enough so you had to start your own?

amazing how dense people are taking this, encouraged by Hillary Clinton and McCain, purposely taking one spinnable sentence out of context.

75. Well the 5 mayors were featured on a Clinton campaign call so they were plugging their candidate by
attacking her opponent. Not exactly a disinterested unorchestrated opining.

So Obama's campaign had their own conference call too:

Obama’s camp also held a conference call Saturday featuring Pennsylvania mayors. Lancaster Mayor Richard Gray said that he would use the word angry rather than bitter to describe small town moods. He also disagreed with Obama’s original statement which implied that rural Americans clung to their religion or their guns as a crutch. Clinton and her supporters homed in on that portion of the remarks in speeches and news events today, hoping for an opening that might allow the former first lady to close the gap to Obama.

Gray also said he believed Obama offered the chance to shift the focus to more pressing matters, and would more ably represent the needs of small town American than would Sen. Clinton. Gray called the responses to the remarks put forth by Clinton and Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, as more condescending than Obama’s original words were.

Braddock, Pa., Mayor John Fetterman said Obama’s remarks weren’t on the order of “fabricating sniper stories” or “imagining opposition to NAFTA,” a shot at Clinton.

78.  Not one person in that article is supporting or defending Obama.
At the very best, these few people might be weakly defending him, such as the Lancaster mayor:

"Lancaster Mayor Richard Gray said that he would use the word angry rather than bitter to describe small town moods. He also disagreed with Obama’s original statement...."

88. Fast Eddie said on CNN tonight that PA has totally turned around under the Bush Administration!
He said yeah, it used to be bad (and he gave the timeframe of the Clinton Administration - "10 yrs ago", which was unintentionally hilarious), but he said the last 5 have been GREAT!

So, there you have it - the PA Dem machinery says things are great under this disgusting administration, no fucking wonder he's for McHillary.

I'm sure he's strong-arming and shaking down every Dem in the Keystone State.

What possible difference does them being mayors make?

My mayor is an ass. I wouldn't let him mow my lawn, let alone speak for me in a primary.

94. Again the same lie...

Ignore that obama was talking about single issue voters, and pretend he was talking about everybody in middle america.

Ignore he was talking about voting on single issues like guns or gays or immigration, and act like he was talking about anybody who hunts or goes to church being bitter.

And ignore that he was talking about bitterness towards government and politics, and pretend he was saying just bitter.

You think this kind of obvious distortion and attempts to tell people who are having hard times, that everything is going great is going to play out well.... DURING TAX WEEK?

The next week as millions of Americans pay their taxes and are more bitter at government than any other time of year... and they get to see hillary saying how everything is so great they should be offended at obama saying they feel bitter towards government.

100. Thanks for the post rodeodance.
That is all I can say to you at this time. I can not say anything out loud that would be critical of Mr. Obama on DU. I think it is against the rules or something. Sometimes I think if he ate a baby on live television, excuses would be made that he was just hungry. So I will continue to keep myself on the sidelines with regards to criticizing him because he is as perfect as Jesus. I love ya rodeodance. You are indeed more brave than I am. This is just all too ugly for me. I don't even recognize DU any more. I should change my name to Switzerland in an effort to remain neutral.

104. I just came back from PA and people are NOT amused.
We had people walk into the campaign office in Reading who kept mentioning the "bitter" remarks. Same in Allentown. Out canvassing people mentioned it too.

It was also reported in the local newspapers and the newscasts on the 3 networks.

Thanks Obama!!!
