Talkingpointsmemo Must Read: Clintons and Their Hypocrisy or "For It, Before She Was Against It"
For it, Before She Was Against It

By Josh Marshall

Theda Skocpol writes in ...

I have been in meetings with the Clintons and their advisors where very clinical things were said in a very-detached tone about unwillingness of working class voters to trust government -- and Bill Clinton -- and about their unfortunate (from a Clinton perspective) proclivity to vote on life-style rather than economic issues. To see Hillary going absolutely over the top to smash Obama for making clearly more humanly sympathetic observations in this vein, is just amazing. Even more so to see her pretending to be a gun-toting non-elite. Give us a break!

I wonder if she realizes that gaining a few days of lurid publicity that might reach a slice of voters is going to cost her a great deal in the regard of many Democrats, whose strong support she will need if she somehow claws her way to the nomination -- and even more so if she does not clinch the nomination. The distribution of "we're not bitter" stickers to her campaign rallies is the height of over-the-top crudity, and the reports are that very few audience members seem to have much enthusiasm for this nonsense. Not surprisingly, people cannot see the reasons for so much fuss.

Yes, she wants a big break, she desperately wants the nomination she and Bill believe is hers by right. We all know that. But where is her authenticity and her dignity and her sense of any proportion?

This has to be one of the few times in U.S. political history when a multi-millionaire has accused a much less wealthy fellow public servant, a person of the same party and views who made much less lucrative career choices, of "elitism"! (I won't say the only time, because U.S. political history is full of absurdities of this sort.) In a way, it is funny -- and it may not be long before the jokes start.

1. I'm so disappointed in the Clintons. I never thought in my wildest dreams
she'd turn out like this.

Yes, she wants a big break, she desperately wants the nomination she and Bill believe is hers by right. We all know that. But where is her authenticity and her dignity and her sense of any proportion?

The jokes have already begun.

9. I always had a sense she would do or say anything to get what
she wanted. She has proven that my gut instinct was right. Backed into a corner her ugly side has been shown to the world.

2. Someone in LBN reminded me of Hillary's comment on Obama's
speeches: "It's only words." Right. Except when you want to twist them and turn them and make them into something they're not. Her campaign people must be honing their resumes for Rove's firm.

3. Note: This is a short term gain for Clinton and a HUGE long term Loss!
Glad to see others saying that. This is nothing more than distraction from Bills comments giving Snipergate new life.

5. The Democratic Party needs to think of the side-effects.
There are some Hillary supporters in PA who should know better. (Nutter, Sestak, I'm looking at YOU.) That they ENDORSE the crap she is pulling, has me fed up with the entire party and close to turning in my badge.

8. Hang in there!
Clinton does not own the Democratic Party and never will.

Obama has over an 80 percent chance of winning the nomination BEFORE A possible Gore Endorsement.

Bittergate is not sticking like Clinton wanted it too.

Obama is going to own May with multiple contests and many state conventions giving him addons.

I know things suck right now. The republicans have so much ammo against democrats now it is not even funny! However if we work hard and work together we can win this with no issue!

4. She Should Tape One of Those Meetings
And not engage in hearsay, if she wants to be taken seriously.

6. she was there.
you have no reason to believe she's lying except for your hillarian bias. And perhaps she's not a lying pos who tapes private conversations that she's been expressly forbidden to tape.

is a brilliant, widely respected academic. There is no reason for not taking her seriously.

7. "where is her authenticity and her dignity and her sense of any proportion?"
If she ever had any of these important characteristics, they have certainly not been in evidence for the last eight years while she has been enabling the * administration.

10. Hillary is smart, but she is not a "natural" and she does not get "it." She is tone deaf and
so focused and working so hard to win that she has no idea that the "crowd in the pews, are squirming, looking at the time, and waiting for this to be over."

It is about her. It has always been. All those years I never looked, because I didn't want to see. But this long and reveling campaign has opened my eyes.

12. Good old fashioned Republican projection. What we've seen for years.
The way they project their own shortcomings onto their opponent. Calling Kerry a coward, Gore a serial liar, etc.

Only this time it's being done by a Democrat. Clinton (and McCain) trying to label Obama an elitist.

14. If this keeps up McCain will win.
Hopefully it wont tho. I think Clinton will exit before June or after the last state votes.

13. Handing out the "I'm not bitter" stickers reminds me of the
purple heart band-aids passed out by the repubs during the 2004 election. Both are disgusting. In reality, having one Democrat use this against another makes this action even MORE sleazy than the actions of the repubs, imo.

16. What is next from her? "The constitution sucks" stickers?
People think it is bad before she gets into the office of president. We have no idea what could happen if she won.

This is going to lead to McCain as president if it keeps up.
