BREAKING~~~Gallup Poll Shows Obama extending lead to 50-41
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 12:07 PM by acrosstheuniverse
http://www.gallup.com/poll/106435/Gallup-Daily-Obama-Maintains-Solid-Democratic-Lead-50-41.aspx

The latest news in the campaign focuses on remarks Obama made, first reported on Friday, about working class and rural voters being "bitter" about the economy. Clinton and John McCain have seized on the remarks.

Initial indications are that the controversial remarks has not yet hurt Obama -- his 9-percentage point lead in the current results (based on April 10-12 polling) is right in line with the average 8.5-point lead he held in the prior six days' tracking results. Also, his lead in the current results shows a slight improvement from his 7-point advantage in April 9-11 polling. As the story gains momentum in the press, the coming days' tracking results will measure its ultimate impact.

The controversy comes just as Obama has established himself as the leader in Democratic voters' preferences for the nomination, holding a statistically significant lead in each of the past seven days' tracking results. Prior to that, he had only managed to hold a significant lead in as many as four consecutive days' results, doing this in late March. (To view the complete trend since Jan. 3, 2008, click here.)

The results of the general election trial heats are the same as in previous days, with Obama ahead of McCain 46% to 43% and Clinton up on McCain 46% to 45%. Though both results are within the poll's margin of error, the fact that the Democrats' advantages have held up for several days suggests a high probability that they actually hold a lead in the underlying population of registered voters. -- Jeff Jones

6. PA. White women begin to turn away from Clinton
LEVITTOWN, Pa. — Like many women over 50, Paula Houwen was eager to vote for Hillary Clinton for president.

"I was impressed when she was first lady. She wasn't the country's trophy wife," the 56-year-old suburban Philadelphia pharmacist recalled.

Today, though, Houwen's no longer a Clinton fan.

"I do not like the way Hillary Clinton has run her campaign," she said.

Clinton's strongest core of support — white women — is beginning to erode in Pennsylvania, the site of the critical April 22 Democratic presidential primary, and a loss here could effectively end her White House run.

A Quinnipiac University survey taken April 3-6 in Pennsylvania found that Clinton's support fell 6 percentage points in a week among white women. Nationally, a Lifetime Networks poll of women found that 26 percent said they liked Clinton less now than in January, while only 15 percent said they liked her more.

"These are Democratic women who waited all their lives for a woman president, but Hillary is not turning them on," said polling analyst Clay Richards.

14. This is reason for hope
The fact that adding yesterday's polling results to the three-day average increased Obama's lead (slightly) is reason for being hopeful, since the political news Friday night and Saturday was dominated by "bitter-gate". So the initial reaction wasn't too bad.

However, a lot of people will only read or hear about this controversy today and Monday; and the continuing coverage through this coming week might affect people's perceptions. Really, we'll only know the size of the task before us when the polls come out next weekend.

Even so, I'm beginning to think that everything's going to be fine. People are a lot smarter than some politicians give them credit for.

19. It is a daily tracking poll.
Daily...as in they poll people every day.

They take the polling data that they get every day. Then they use a 3-day rolling average.
