"Those who are the least among us"

I don't know about you, but that comment could sound elitist to some people.

What are your thoughts?

(Edited for clarification)

1. I think it's probably Biblical.
But what the hell, Jesus was an elitist.

3. probably....but not all people are biblical
so it really stinks to make a broad statement like that.

I'll have to find the text
of the forum tonight...that comment jumped out at me, and so I wrote it down.

It would be different if she said those who have the least, but she said "those who are the least among us"

5. It's from the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 25:
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 10:46 PM by QC
31 When the Son of man shall come in his glory, and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory:

32 And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

33 And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left.

34 Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world:

35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:

36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.

37 Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink?

38 When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee?

39 Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?

40 And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.

41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

42 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me no meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me no drink:

43 I was a stranger, and ye took me not in: naked, and ye clothed me not: sick, and in prison, and ye visited me not.

44 Then shall they also answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, or athirst, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not minister unto thee?

45 Then shall he answer them, saying, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye did it not to one of the least of these, ye did it not to me.

6. I always thought it was "Those who have..", but it doesn't bother me her way either.
This is a pretty petty thing to complain about.

7. I'm not complaining, all I'm saying is it can be taken the wrong way
especially if your not a biblical person.

9. They were speaking at a forum for religious people.
It's a pretty near certainty that anyone attending would recognize the phrase.

Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 10:53 PM by SunsetDreams
I just wanted a sense of what people thought, because there are people who are losing their homes, jobs, living on food stamps etc

I'm just trying to put myself in someones shoes, who may be sitting in a homeless shelter for example, watching that on the tv screen, and trying to digest how that comment may come across.

I'm not trying to make a big deal out of it really, I just worry how someone might take that comment.

I hope things get better for you soon, I know I've been there. I've had to use food stamps before when times were tough.

It's getting worse in this day and age, because our wages and job creation are not keeping up with the economy.

Now, did she say this in the religious forum on CNN?? Of all places...

I think what she meant to say is those who have the least, but instead she said something that could be taken the wrong way.

22. They don't care about the truth.
Edited on Sun Apr-13-08 11:49 PM by QC
The whole point is to try to gin up some phony outrage, as I said above.

This passage, BTW, is one of the main scriptural supports for The Social Gospel. One would think that self-declared progressives might be glad to hear a candidate speaking of the need for society to provide for the poorest and most humble. But there's a candidate to be smeared and another to be exalted, so the truth does not matter.

23. the problem with you obama folk is people understand the
clintons even with this mass of millions for their income understand both know too whom they represent. If you do not believe it then maybe you should not like Ted Kennedy, worth millions and still folks know to whom he represents. Jay Rockerfeller, millionaire, west virigina, folks know who he represents. I could go on and to say just because the clintons are way wealthier somehow they will lose sight who they represent is a no no....

25. THE PROBLEM WITH YOU CLINTON FOLK IS...
...well, nothing really, other than the fact that you're passionate about your candidate. And that's the hardest part about trying to make you see that Sen. Clinton is damaging our nominee, our Party, and ultimately our nation the longer she stays in.
