will they debate?
One issue per debate, candidates know the issue in advance (but not the questions).

1. What would be nice
Would be a Lincoln-DOuglas style debate mixed with some policy; Essentially how candidates might solve problems and the philisophical/ideological grounds for the problem and solutions.

3. If I were Kerry's people, I would INSIST on Lincoln-Douglas.
I would compromise on just about anything else-- the number of debates, the locations, the time-limits, the topics-- as long as Kerry had a chance to engage in direct Lincoln-Douglas-style debate with Bush for at least one 15-minute segment in each debate.

Kerry would EAT HIM ALIVE.

4. Winning Debates
I recall Gore absolutely creaming Bush in at least two debates in 2000. The next day, all the online polls said Bush won. I'm afraid that Kerry would win the debate on substance, policy, clarity and lucidity - but the public as a whole would think Bush won because he's so regular-guy, folksy, "just-like-me" seeming.

5. I think you may be right, but I don't get it.
I don't want someone "just-like-me". I want someone a whole lot smarter, more articulate, and more knowledgeable than I am running this country. I sure as don't want one dumber than I am, like bush.
