MY DEEPEST GRATITUDE TO YOU ALL - THE RANDI RHODES SHOW IS BACK NATIONWIDE TODAY!

Together all of us just saved the national syndication of The Randi Rhodes Show.

ALL OF YOU DID IT! Thank you…

To all of you who called and blogged and wrote to your local stations and showed up for our show in MASSIVE NUMBERS.

To the AMAZING Nova M who gave me a new home and all the tools I needed to make this happen in RECORD TIME.

The INCREDIBLY LOYAL Randi Rhodes Show Affiliates who built a fortress around me and said, “We’re with you Randi!”

All of us worked our asses off and MADE A BRAND NEW NATIONAL RANDI RHODES SHOW in 4 days (Thank you Manzo, Duffy, Dave and Scott for working ALL WEEKEND!). Thank you to all of you who haven’t slept, eaten or WASHED in 4 days!!! We’re not pretty but we are TOUGH muthas.

THIS HAS NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE and without everyone giving it EVERYTHING THEY HAD, it would not have happened.

Be very sure that I couldn’t have done it without the unbelievably smart John Manzo who rolled up his sleeves and lent me his brain when mine just wanted to shut down.

The MOST PROFESSIONAL STAFF IN RADIO are the Engineers and Operations Managers at 1290 WJNO/West Palm Beach, my REAL HOME FOR THE PAST 9 YEARS. My old WJNO studio is now my flagship studio for the national show.

Thank you to Ken Charles, Dave Denver and John Hunt in South Florida and ONE OF THE TRUEST BELIEVERS, Mr. Gabe Hobbs. Gabe sent Mr. Manzo to West Palm 6 years ago to take the show National. And that’s exactly what Mr. Manzo did. These two incredible men are the two who STOOD WITH ME EVERY STEP OF THE WAY. THEY ARE TALK RADIO and without them, I would never have been able to take this show national and never would have been able to KEEP IT NATIONALLY SYNDICATED today. If you ever want to know what I have that no one else does, it’s Hobbs and Manzo. They are THE RADIO ELITE who opened the door and held it open when some tried to slam it in my face.

Thank you to the General Managers and Programmers at all of our affiliate stations who said YES before I ASKED. . Almost ALL of THE RANDI RHODES SHOW affiliates will be carrying the show.

And most of all, I am so grateful to ALL OF YOU who did everything you could think of while we were doing everything we could think of to make this happen.

...I think AAR was wrong for suspending her, and that they did it for political reasons. I think she pulled off a miracle by getting set up at WJNO and M-Nova in such a short period of time.

I may not appreciate some of what she does on the air (I can't listen to her because of the way she treats her callers and hogs time in interviews), but there are others that really get a great deal of support from her show.

So I'm glad she's back on the air, and I'll listen today as props to her for standing by her guns and getting it together so quickly.

150. Me B Zola, thanks for answering my first question. I was busy on Monday...

and didn't know if she'd be picked up -- same time? 3 - 6PM! I remember WJNO, because I think that's where Sally Jessie Raphael interviewed me in the early 1970s on an entirely different matter.

I listen now and then here in Portland, Oregon, when I want to hear someone who talks like Larry King and sings like Barbra Streisand.:sarcasm: Well, not so much the latter... I saw Randi briefly after the brouhaha erupted, but have been busy with a new volunteer program that doesn't include radio.

I didn't agree with AAR's decision because of free speech principles, but I didn't like the raunchiness of calling two high-level political women "fucking whores" -- that goes over the line, IMHO. Are you old enough to remember Lenny Bruce or his raunchy humor either in person or on records?

I always think of Randi as a friend -- although I've never met her. It's because she sounds like my mother-in-law from Brooklyn, and my ex-husband from Washington Heights (both now deceased). My current third husband with whom I have shared my life for 36 years -- that lovable, digital darling, Audio Al -- has kind of an East Coast accent. Al was born in Boston but spent a lot of time with his cousin and his mother's brother and other in NYC.

Here in Portland, I frequently listen to KBPS on Sunday, and Ed Goldberg, from the Bronx, shares a similar accent. Ed and I review movies and frequently have a nice chat at the previews. He's very bright guy who lives in SE near Hawthorne Boulevard. We went out for coffee in February and it was fun.

I just feel like I'm home when I'm talking to these people because I lived in New York City for nine years after moving there from Florida. Randi didn't like living in New York and she had a dog in an apartment, which is very difficult. Her niece/daughter and her ex-husband/producer and I think even her mother(?) are in Florida. I'm sure when she realized that a guy like Ed Schultz could broadcast from Fargo, North Dakota, she could also be geographically realigned. The technology exists to broadcast from anywhere these days.

I preceded Randi at WIOD on North Bay Causeway by a bunch of years, when I took over Larry King's 11 PM - 5 AM entertainment, music and interview show in December 1971. I had been doing "on the street" interviews and turning them in for Larry to play so we could all go home at 4 AM and not 5 AM. Larry was arrested briefly four days before Christmas in December, 1971, and he lost both his radio and WTVJ-TV show (he is/was a fantastic sports broadcaster) as well as his newspaper column in the Miami Beach Sun. But Larry was never indicted or convicted on this charge. He had serious financial problems in those days, and it took him a long time and he had a lot of help getting back to work.

After that, I got in touch with Biggie Nevins, WIOD's program manager. It was a time of affirmative action, and there was no reason I couldn't take over. I had had television experience as a college student, held a degree in TV-Radio-Film from the University of Miami, and worked with NBC and Barry Gray during my second marriage in NYC. I was doing screening chores for Larry for no pay. Biggie gave me a chance to do three nights a week for $50 a night while he searched for a male host. I could not take that job, because I had two small children. But the money was very important to me because I was divorcing and broke. My ex- had a mid-life career crisis, lost his film job, and started driving a taxi. It was a tough time in my life.

I did Larry's show from December 1971 off and on until mid April. I was "discovered" by Boston's WEEI after hooking up with Bruce Lee (not THAT Bruce Lee.. another one). We used WATS (Wide Area Telephone Service) to allow Boston to talk to Miami. The station offered me a job, and I started that job on May 15, 1972 -- the first woman with a full-time call in radio show SIX days a week. Yes, friends, I talked for 24 hours a week -- but I got that job because I was a woman who credits affirmative action and -- hear me Geraldine Ferraro -- I WAS LUCKY to be at the right place at the right time.

That was another time when there were no women on the air. A conservative talk show host who was on before me, Alan Courtney, and his wife Bernice were very kind to me when events took place four days before Christmas in 1971.

My stepson's wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, and had a mastectomy. I just can't think about anything but breast cancer when she plays "Shake Your Boobies" from God-remembers-what-era.

I think because their shows are on later and I think Miller and Rhodes get tons of callers
and try to get a lot of people in during the time allotted. If you call repeating an already
'beaten to death" POV, she may get you off the air fast so she can move on.

it's what turned me off of her show. I guess I empathized with the callers. It's not that she cut them off, but that even if they agreed with her 95% she would blast them about the 5% or for not framing it right or for using the wrong adverb.

I thought she should learn to be more diplomatic even in disagreement. Start with something like "I agree with some of that, but ..." or "yes, you are right, AND ...". Instead it seemed more like she always started with "NO, you are wrong, that's idiotic ..."

I'm happy for Randi, who's smart as a whip and funny as hell. I'm happy for the people who listen to and support her.

She has continued to trod the path that I did (as Ellen Kimball in Boston and off mike as Ellen Rabow. I worked for original NYC talker Barry Gray and Miami personality Larry King's "screener" and production assistant. A listener changed my name to Ellen RAINBOW in Florida and people sent me rainbows up the kazoo when I took over for Larry who was arrested in December 1971! Many other women before her have help pave Randi's way.

As long as someone will pay her to run at the mouth she won't be living under a bridge, and that's a good thing, I guess.

Radio management has the right to hire and fire "at will." I know you're in Massachusetts, and that's where I did most of my talking.

Are you old enough to remember Jerry Williams? Paul Benzaquin? Any of the other talkers who were pretty regularly suspended and then rehired at another station?

This business is ALL business. In my estimation, Air America Radio has cut off its nose to spite its face.

But, ultimate, it's pretty much the same-old, same-old.

All in all, I'm glad she's back because she a woman and she's better than most of the men. Thom Hartmann and company are on a local Portland show from 6-9 AM. That's when I'm usually driving around. In the house, I watch TV. By the way, I thought Sam Seder handled himself admirably during this tough time.

Are there any talk shows on in Boston these days? Which ones do you like? Is Mike Barnicle still around? He got fired by the Boston Globe because of a plagarism issue, but he's still going... stronger than ever.

PS. Audio Al and I are coming to Boston May 22-June 1. Maybe we'll be celebrating my birthday somewhere -- Saturday, May 31. It will have to be pay as you go, and we're thinking about what's on the corner of Rt. 1 at Elm Street, in Dedham. So far, I have one sign-up. there was a concerted effort by HRC supporters from DU (they even had a petition and have a messageboard - 'DUmp') to get her off the air and to keep her off. The name Jerry Williams faintly rings a bell but I didn't live in MA my whole life and when I did before '85, I was an avid WBCN-FM fan and I listened to them almost 100% of the time and I remember their shake up and being taken over by a RW company that changed their whole format and they lost listeners but I left MA shortly after that happened. Your reunion sounds like fun. If I'm around in May or June, send me a reminder. I live near Dedham. ;) There is only RW talk radio in MA now. All the progressive stations are gone. I have to listen on the internet to be able to hear any of it. :( And yes, Mike Barnicle is still around but I don't listen much to him. Not since his firing and his spewing of the RW meme. Ugh.

If she's criticizing something read up on what she's read (she posts it, after all) ... if it doesn't change your mind it will at least give you food for thought. If she has an opinion about something it's an informed opinion -- and worth following up on whether you end up agreeing with her or not. I have listened to her for years: she has never brought up a main show topic that wasn't worth a second look, further digging, and a re-think.
