They shouldn't only react angrily to shit when it helps make Obama look bad. They both need to issue statements on this and talk about race. Come on! They need to be calling this shit out!

http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/188918.php

Rep. Geoff Davis (R-KY) on Obama: "I'm going to tell you something: That boy's finger does not need to be on the button. He could not make a decision in that simulation that related to a nuclear threat to this country."

53. Bill's already called Hillary a "girl"
It would be awkward to play the boy/girl card in one's favor one week and then turn around and castigate somebody else for doing it the next week.

72. They are both demeaning
What I know is that sexism is just as big a social ill as racism. Women have been referred to as "girl" in the same way black men are reffered to as "boy", as a way to disempower them. It is exactly the same thing--it is what united suffragists and abolitionists in the 19th century.

74. you are wrong
calling a female girl is not always demeaning; calling a black man boy is ALWAYS not just demeaning but pernicious, a verbal lynching period. the former can be very negative but to be so depends on the context. there is no grey area for the latter. it is always rancorous, prejudicial, and derogatory, a verbal emblem of the worst breed of racism and hate.

go on, keep arguing. if you intend to dialogue though first respond to the point

75. Your comparison doesn't make sense
You are using terms that are not equivalent, so of course your straw man argument is not logical. A female and a black man are not equivalent--calling a female a girl is sometimes appropriate IF that female is in fact a girl. However calling a black man a boy is not appropriate because man is more specific than female.

The misunderstanding of the non-equivalence of these terms underlies the social acceptance of sexism even in circles where racism is decried.

84. I didn't mix the terms up
My comparison was between calling a woman a girl and calling a black man a boy. Your comparison was between calling a female a girl and calling a black man a boy. Look up the terms female and woman--they are not totally interchangeable. Female does not imply age, whereas woman does.

The gist of my argument is that it can be demeaning to refer to an woman (or an adult female if you prefer) as a girl in the same way it is demeaning to refer to a black man as a boy. Both are used in attempts to disempower an adult by making them child-like.

Bill Clinton is a master at parsing language. He used the wording to his wife's advantage when he said something like "they are beating up on a girl". It made Hillary's opposition look cruel for using their power over a less powerful person (men vs. a "girl").

My point is that it would be somewhat disenginuous of them at this point to denounce someone for using the same tactic of disempowering an opponent by the use of language.

I was in the minority in disapproving of the use of that term. I can't conceive of any woman in a leadership position, civilian or military, referring to herself as a "girl," much less having her husband barge into her professional life and play the role that Bill has.

63. There's an Obama Girl, why not an Obama Boy?
I think Geoff should cut a video... put on a G string and give us a dance, if he's TRULY SORRY.

73. A woman refering to herself as a "girl" is completely different than a white man. . .
. . .referring to a Black man as "boy." Folks don't really have an understanding of history. Boy has for a long been widely considered to be used by white racists to address Black men.
