What if you were a working class person who lived in a town where jobs had disappeared
many years ago and deep down you actually were bitter about things and tended to vote on things like religion and guns, but only because you had lost hope and were scared for your family? But you keep those feelings pent up and pushed deep down. Then someone comes along and describes your situation to the tee?

Well, you might get defensive and get angry, or perhaps the words might really ring true to your situation. This whole thing reminds me of a physiologist analyzing someone's deep bitter/hurt feeling and then having the psychologist boldly say: "Sounds like you are bitter and you have lost hope about jobs coming back so you are clinging to the things you can hold onto."

The person would lay in the couch for a while then say. "You know you are exactly right! How did you see that? I really have given up hope and become bitter. I guess I am just scared for my family and if I can have a good retirement. I always leaned on God because I had given up on those jobs coming back."

Then suddenly he/she begins to understand all those pent up feelings and fears. Then they start talking to people around town about those feeling.

It's hard for me to know for sure what these people are feeling, but I bet it's close to something like this. I know if I had lost my good job 20 years ago and had to deal with stress, fears for my family and worries about retirement, I would grow hard inside and tend to cling to the things that I know well. Things like going to church for many people and going out and hunting with childhood friends. Those are old traditions that help people survive in difficult times.

I just think it's interesting that Obama has such an insightful view of people and their situations. That he would see these things so clearly while so many of us cant. This whole "bitter-gate" thing has actually made me understand and respect Obama more than I had before. I think he really understands and is in touch with people. Thats probably why the attack from Hillary hurt his feelings so much and caused him to fight back. There is nothing worse than being labeled as someone who is out of touch and elitist when you are in reality the exact opposite.
