Rendell explicitly stated that some Pennsylvanians wouldn't vote for a Black man |
|
Yet when Obama hints at that FACT, suddenly he's some kind of monster? I despise it when some people hate being called a racist NOT because they abhor the idea of racism, but because they abhor the idea of some minority calling them out on something. That's what's happening here. Nothing that Obama said is groundbreaking or even insightful, as it's a proven fact that you can make people vote against their economic interests by appealing to the core values they "cling" onto (i.e. Nixon's Southern Strategy). But what many people seemed to be galled at is that an educated (aka uppity) young Black man is not kissing the feet of "good old Americans".

2. Well, if you'll remember back when it was reported what he said on DU, |
|
Obama supporters here had a cow. They were calling him every name in the book because of what he said.

4. But, Obama said Rendell was probably correct in saying that. |

This would actually be a pretty good argument for Obama to use.

3. That's fine. Let the racists and bigots go to the Republican party |

where they'll be more comfortable.
There's no way we can have the kind of Democratic party we need, that's socially just and doesn't support unjust wars, if we keep racists and bigots around. There are plenty of good, decent, thoughtful Republicans who'll replace them if we keep focusing on issues the way Obama did in that Compassion Forum last night. Many of those people cheering him on when he talked about cutting poverty are former Republicans.
