PA to Hillary: PA Doesn't Need a President Who Looks Down Her Nose and Tells them How to Think
Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 08:43 PM by berni_mccoy
This is the blowback I mentioned yesterday that was coming for Hillary (http://journals.democraticunderground.com/berni_mccoy/277)

I knew that she would not be able to stop banging her pot on this issue. She kept on using it over and over and over again. She used it in her stump speeches on Friday and Saturday. She had the gall to use it at the CNN Compassion Forum. Perhaps this is why she only got polite applause while Obama got a standing ovation when he both entered and exited the stage. He had the grace to say it's politics as usual and instead, said "we should be lifting the country up instead of tearing each other down." Note that he didn't say SHE. He said WE. Clinton can only dream of having such grace and dignity.

And she staged an entire event around pointing out that she's a down-to-earth people person who throws back shots with the men while she saunters around with beer in hand, forgetting about her two mansions and $109 million in the bank. It's about as authentic as Dukakis in the tank. Maybe it was the buzz from the booze that caused her to plan an entire week of events around Obamas statement, but it was definitely the hangover to the morning polls that must have given her a headache. If she really is a down-to-earth person from a small-town in the rust-belt like myself (I grew up in a small town in northeast Ohio), she must have cursed and spat as Gallup showed an increase lead for Obama nationally and several respectable PA-specific polls came out showing no loss, and even some gain for Obama in PA since Friday. She must have thought, 'WTF do I have to do to knock this guy down in the polls?'

Her hangover must have gotten worse as she appeared before the American Association of Manufacturers and she started retelling the story of Obama's statement and how Pennsylvanians ought to interpret it, and she was told "NO" in loud shouts by the audience and when she tried to continue and say that they weren't bitter, more loud yells of "NO", denying her any sort of gain from it. The remaining of the speech was awkward and silent with no more shouts, but also, no applause or cheering.

And tonight, in Philadelphia, while addressing the Philadelphia County Democratic Party's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner, where the press had arrived nearly two hours before hand, she was forced to cut her speech short right around 5 minutes when a chatty and meddlesome crowd kept her from grasping their attention. The crowd was never quiet during her speech or afterward.

Yes, Pennsylvanians are smart Hillary. They understand what Obama said, very clearly. You think they are stupid enough to believe your twisted interpretation of it, but they get it. And they are pissed at an elitist like yourself who has never had to work a hard day in your life, who has $109 million in the bank and pays Union-busters like Mark Penn as your chief strategist and who sits on the board of Walmart where goods sold come from China who has the nerve to tell them how they should see things. Pennsylvanians don't want to see the world through Hillary-eyes. They have their own, very good, understanding of it. And they are telling you loud and clear that they don't want you looking down your nose at them telling them how they should see the world.

I can't even begin to grasp this colosal blunder...even after all of the other crazed blunders.....and then to call him an Elitest...seriously...

I don't believe the polls that she is 20 points ahead.

I voted for her in the WA caucus and I can honestly say I do not feel today as I felt then. I have been extremely dissapointed in her since then.

All she had to do was stay on the high road and not go to Rovian tactics.

Pennsylvania will be telling...

31. So you saying PAers go to church...not because they 're religious ..but because
they're bitter? Better watch out for all those angry bitter hunters...you might get your face blown off...just like Cheney's friend. Is this the way to win votes? I sure hope he has more political Savoy in the GE if he wins the primary...or we're screwed.

81. I feel like I'm dealing with the three little monkeys....hear no evil...see no evil and
say no evil. Open your eyes and ears and stop saying what YOU think he means. He said what he said...you can't deny it. By the way I'm not the only one who believes this...so did all the pro Obama media whores. Why do you think Obama had to explain himself, again? Why did he have to retract or admit he errored? He gives a good prepared speech but he doesn't express himself very accurately. How many times are he going to go back later and retract or correct his statements and still win the GE. Maybe you better give some extra thought about who to vote for...other people are?

91. They turn to church because
It is all they have left. Their jobs, their homes, a chance at a college education for their kids, all are gone. So what is left to turn to for comfort? Stop twisting it. People turn to CONSTANTS when they are down, Obama was not implying that the only reason they go to church is because they are bitter, he was saying that's all they have left. Just like a child who is scared in a thunderstorm, they go to their parents for comfort. Is God not the Ultimate Father, a source of comfort and stability. He has always been and always will be, and that is they only thing they can truly count on anymore.(I don't personally buy into this, but went to church as a child).

66. I hope for your sake that you have no young ones, since McCain has
already promised "more wars". Who do you think is going to fight these "new wars"? Where will the fresh, warm bodies come from? Do you think young people will be tripping over themselves to sign up for "voluntary" certain death? Not likely, the All Volunteer Army is now FUBAR, and you and I both know what that means.

I know that you and others think you're making a statement, and registering your disapproval of Obama at the same time, but since I have no kids or grandkids, I'll keep a positive thought in hopes that yours won't have to fight unncessary wars to line the pockets of the wealthiest Americans.

Good luck to you & yours.

Raised by a single mother and his Grandparents..spent two years at Occidental college before transferring to Columbia...working on the streets in Chicago...than earning his way to Harvard Law...where he became the first African American editor of the law review.

Hard work isn't elitism

Hitching your train to a Brilliant man than riding his coat tails and running on his good name is.

26. Schadenfreude.
The crowd reactions at those two speaking engagements tell the truth that the MSM won't. HRC is reaping exactly what she's sown, and I hope her clueless ad gets her much more of the same. I hope she wastes a bundle running it in PA and pissing off the voters she's underestimated. Her campaign hasn't gotten a hint yet, so I suspect that's exactly what they'll do.

260 colleges and universities, 3rd behind CA/NY.

37. Later that evening, the crowd ate Obama up!
They loved him.

Sorry, no video yet, just my eyewitness account.

Philadelphia is Obama's city!

BTW, I met your boy Conyers last weekend. He's awesome. And yes, he mentioned impeachment. ;)

40. Sweet Jesus. Bernie
You certainly summed up several of my thoughts & feelings on this subject, as difficult as it may be for republicans, the media, and Hillary to accept.

Excellent post.

56. this is so uplifting to hear

This morning i turned on the news before going to work and the lie seemed to be all over, crap like 'this could be

damaging to Obama's campaign in PA" etc. I turned off the tv after a couple of minutes and felt sickened for most of the

day, and then on the way home it hit me; Hillary is hedging her bets on her assumption that working class people

are kind of dumb, easily manipulated and will believe her even after all the BS she's thrown out. HA HA

She really is out of touch!

67. Great post Bernie...k&r
I know Obama's a gentleman, but I wish he would go after her much more forcefully on the Bosnia lie. If Hillary wants to attack his character & integrity, she's already at a huge disadvantage. Just my wishful thinking, like I said, he's far too much of a gentleman.

84. Thank you.
I believe Obama has stayed true to his vision of focusing on the issues instead of playing politics as usual. This is why BitterGate hasn't hurt him and is why his support among the people (bitter or otherwise) is so strong.

95. I have to agree with you. I'm watching Countdown, and like all the
other "gates", I think bittergate is actually helping him, and hillary's not getting the boost that she'd hoped for. I just found out that he's actually ahead by (+5) in Indiana. I think Indiana will be bigger than previously thought. And Obama has expanded his lead in Gallup. I'm sorry, but she just can't catch a break. I feel so sad for her.....
