your reality is a product of your environment, rural TN.
Most of us don't live in your environment. So we have a different take on things. You don't speak for the rest of the country. Not every state is as backward as TN

146. Do you really think that the political climate of wherever you live in TN
is a good reflection of the United States as a whole, so that you can make assertions about nationwide politics based on your town/city?

(And yeah, I don't expect you'll reply; you didn't respond the other couple of times I brought this up on your substance-less thread from the other day.)

151. No.
However, Democrats I am in contact with will definitely not vote for Obama in the GE.

If Democrats will not vote for Obama, how do you think he will fair?

Many are very afraid of Obama and say they will just not vote in the GE.

Do you think that bodes well?

163. A few things
I am from a southern "red" state like you, and one thing worth keeping in mind is that we have a fair amount of "Democrats" who never vote for Democrats for President. Many of them haven't actually voted for a Democrat on the Presidential level since Carter in '76.

Speaking anecdotally, I have run into more people who would consider voting for Obama than Clinton. (And I do not live in a liberal area; I currently live in a county that voted 60-percent for Bush in '04; McCain will likely win it by a similar margin.) I have only run into one "Democrat" who would vote for Clinton but wouldn't for Obama. His reason: "I don't want a n*gger in the White House." I am wondering if these are the type of people you are meeting who are "very afraid" of Obama. The thing is, at least if you can trust national polls, there are more people willing to vote for a black man than to vote for a woman- so it would appear that there are more people who just flat-out won't vote for Clinton than just flat-out won't vote for Obama. Either way, we won't be getting a certain percentage of voters regardless of whether we run Clinton or Obama. However, most of them are likely Repugs anyway.

And no, I don't think your report bodes well, but I wasn't counting on TN helping us anyway. They chose the Chimp over their own former Senator Gore in 2000, and have been moving more and more towards being a solid Repug state in recent years. TN may very well be one of those states where Clinton would run stronger than Obama in the general; KY, AR, WV, and FL are some likely others. I just don't think that necessarily indicates that Clinton would be a stronger candidate nationally.

190. NO single state is a "good reflection" of the US as a whole.
Not Kansas, not Iowa, not New Hampshire, and sure as hell not Massachusetts.

You might be surprised to know that Nashville is a solid Democratic bastion, one of the few in the South, by the way. How do you know where TG lives, anyway, or even that she's making her statement based on the political climate where she lives? I didn't see that in the OP.

202. That was my point
She had posted a thread a few hours before this one talking about all of the Democrats where she lives not being willing to vote for Obama, and pointing to this as an indication of how he would do nationally. My point is that you can't do much in the way of making generalizations about national elections based on your little corner of the world.

I grew up there, and my family still lives there. So I think I'm maybe just a wee bit more qualified to comment than you are.

Nashville (for starters) is solidly Democratic. There's a strong Dem presence in TN and frankly, I think it's poised to go blue this election. It may not, however, if Obama is the nom, since TN went for Hillary, but that remains to be seen.

It's not as backward as you think. Nor is it as backward as it used to be.

216. No, MS is red as a cherry tomato. TN is a bit purplish.
Tennessee, on the other hand, has a Democratic governor (Phil Bredesen), at least two strongly Dem major cities. If our chances this election are as strong as everybody here assumes (or hopes), then we've got as good a shot of turning TN blue as we do any red/purple state.

One reason for that is the pompous assholes who support him and who daily parade the same onslaught of abuse on Hillary supporters. Honestly, I've never seen such immature name-calling bullshit in my life. This is the worst DU has ever been, and I've been here since it began.

I, on the other hand, am not so petty as to let the Hillary supporters on DU and their anti-Obama sentiments stop me from working to get her elected over John McCain. I have a greater goal: more liberal judges appointed to the SCOTUS.

It seems a bit selfish to me to cause future generations to suffer at the hands of a right wing court because of some real or perceived slight of the candidate you'd prefer to win by people on an anonymous message board, don'tcha think?

FDR came before Truman and worked against the great depression. Truman just barely beat Dewey. JFK just barely beat Nixon. LBJ became President when JFK was killed. Bush then overwhelmingly beat Dukakis.

76. Hillary is the Ultimate Unelectable Democrat...
1. She has torpedoed her own campaign nearly every day.

2. She has run her campaign using worse tactics than Bush Jr/Rove ever did, going so far as to make racist comments, and race-baiting.

3. She whines and plays the victim, and everybody hates a whiner and perennial victim.

4. Four words: Bill Clinton's Multiple Dick-Gates.

For more reasons why Hillary Clinton cannot win the GE:

210. How would I convince them...?
OH BOY - that's a tough one. :sarcasm:

I would ask them to please tell me how an Obama presidency (given the miniscule policy differences between him and Clinton) could possibly be as bad as a McCain presidency.

-Would Obama appoint judges to overturn Roe V. Wade? McCain's said he thinks it should be overturned; Obama has said no such thing.

-Would Obama keep us in Iraq for 100 years, as McCain would?

-Would Obama take us into more wars? McCain says "I hate to tell you, but there's gonna be more wars."

-Would Obama continue with US use of torture, as McCain voted for?

-Would Obama vote to grant telecoms immunity for tapping our phones, as McCain has?

-Would Obama TALK about supporting the troops, but vote AGAINST increasing their benefits to preserve Bush's tax cuts, as McCain has done 10 times in the past 7 years?

-Would Obama have us sit back and do nothing while the economy implodes and the middle class gets screwed over and over and over again, as McCain would?

And lastly, do these "Democrats (you) are in contact with" LIKE the direction the country's headed now? Because staying home if Obama's the nominee is nothing short of enabling it to continue.

And quite frankly, if these people can tolerate ANY ONE of these things, I question whether or not they're Democrats.

What happened to reasoned argument? What happened to justifying a conclusion from stated facts or observations?

Now all people do on DU is to make ridiculous proclamations out of the clear blue with no supporting facts or arguments. It's so sad to see Dems resorting to the Rovian technique of endlessly repeating nonsense in the hope that people will start to believe that nonsense.

They killed Bobby who was the presumptive nominee.

I'll give you the other but can you name who ran against Carter and Clinton?

And, in the velvet depths of your soul, can you possibly understand what happened to this party after our leaders were assasinated? I don't think so.

And how do you account for Gore winning and not being seated and Kerry also winning and being cheated?

You have to reach back into the last century when the party was digging out of its trauma to call Democratic candidates losers.

And, I'm not in the least surprised that you do. :hi:

THAT John Kerry? The one who didn't lift a finger to fight the crooked vote count? If he did it because he was afraid they'd shoot him, he shouldn't have run in the first place. Anybody who runs for, or especially anybody who wins the presidency, is a potential target for SOME unhinged idiot. That's what the Secret Service is for. Kerry was a hero in Vietnam; I guess he lost his nerve somewhere between Da Nang and windsurfing or skiing in the Alps.

If "Us" is Hillary Supporters, I agree.

If "Us" is the Democratic Party, I think you are adopting a defeatist attitude, and have lost perspective.

If "Us" is the People of America, I don't get it. Chimpy cost "Us the People" the White House.

179. No he wouldn't
Remember any 2 way match up with Edwards:

- Kerry blew Edwards away in 2004

- It was a draw with Cheney - there were times where he looked like a deer in the headlights there

- He was clearly bested by both Obama and HRC

- When he and Kemp came back from Russia, Kemp, who I dislike, was better in their joint conferences.

I could see someone regretting it wasn't Biden. Biden would complete on foreign policy. But I think this year people were looking for something that would remove them from the past - both the 1990s and 2000s. That's why I think that Obama might be better against McCain than even Kerry, who was my first choice and who I think is the only person who is strong on every single issue.

134. Ha.
That's funny.

Hillary has no chance at all of getting elected even should she improbably get the nomination. NONE. She is not only hated by the GOP, she is now hated by a significant percentage of Democrats. She would energise the Republicans to vote against her, while many in her own party would probably not vote for her. If anyone costs us the election, it's Hillary, with her cheap-shot Rovian politics against the likely Democratic nominee. If you're to fucking stupid to understand that, I genuinely pity you.

162. If he doesn't stop ridiculing small town Democrats, he will.
Between him and Michelle and the things that they both say from time to time, I'm not sure even some Democrats will want to vote for him. He should really have never ridiculed small town America.

The truth is that small town America represents quite a few electoral college votes. Remember? We have had this debate time and time again. Popular vote is not how we choose a president in this country. It's the Electoral College vote that decides it and the Electors are divvied up not by the quantity of people for a specific area, but instead in an uneven manner to make sure all are represented.

Obama needs to think about that before he sticks his foot in his mouth again and pisses off more of small town America. We are not all Republicans in small towns. There are a lot of us out here in small towns who are lifelong Democrats and will vote for the Democratic candidate in the GE, but there are also a lot who will take his words to heart and will either not vote or do the unthinkable...we know what the unthinkable is.

201. If the White House is lost, it will be Hillary's fault. I've never, ever
seen a Democratic candidate go after another in such a dirty, Republican way as she's gone after Barack. He's going to be the nominee unless she convinces the superdelegates to overturn the elected vote, something that is highly unlikely. So. If he loses it will be thanks to Hillary's efforts in the primary. If she steals it and becomes the nominee, she loses because Barack's millions of new primary voters will assume their votes don't count and will stay home for the general.
