Cognitive theory and how the Obama camp must get better at negative framing

As a practitioner who uses cognitive therapy to assist those afflicted by mental illness I can tell you such powerful techniques are being used at the macro level but in politics, mostly by Republicans. Democrats must get better at this. Here is how.

You have two frames that you want to define your opponent with, no more than two. For Hillary let’s say: 1), she is a political opportunist and 2), she is a Washington insider.

Now when you are attacked for being elitist, this is an opportunity to dove-tail your frames into your response. Obama is excellent at positive frames about himself and he keeps it simple. I am for change and unity.

The negative frames you want to pin to your opponent have to be consistent, repetitive, and quick. "Of course she will have fake outrage and call me an elitist; she would say anything to get elected." If you are slow to deliver this alternative explanation, the people will believe the only one talking. If you try to use more than two frames, none of them will seem compelling.

Keep it simple and find 5,000 ways to repeat it.
