Obama, Clinton take part in "Compassion Forum" on anti-gay college campus
Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 10:06 PM by Bluebear
Personally, I would have said "Thanks, but compassion does not equal religion, and furthermore I will not appear at any institution which equates homosexuality with stealing and occult behavior." But that's just me.

=====

from the "Messiah College" handbook:

Scriptural Guidelines

As a community we believe that certain scriptural teachings apply to us as they have to all people in all cultures. Our lives are to be characterized by love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. We are to use our gifts in doing such things as serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leading, and showing mercy. In contrast, we are to avoid such sinful practices as drunkenness, stealing, dishonesty, profanity, occult practices, sexual intercourse outside of marriage, homosexual behavior, and sexually exploitative or abusive behavior. Although wrong attitudes such as greed, jealousy, pride, lust, prejudice, and factiousness are harder to detect than wrong behaviors, both are prohibited as sinful and destructive of community life and of the body of Christ.

1. KNR!
Faith in Politics Forum? Should be this long: It don't belong. Period.

I hated this event from the moment I heard of it. I listened to the questions and realized it was even worse.

Now, I find out the venue was an anti-gay campus? Fuck that/

No Democratic Candidate should have had anything to do with that.

2. I disliked the whole affair before I even knew that
I found the whole premise creepy when I just thought they were doing a religious litmus test. This is just icing on the already nasty cake. :(

8. You know I'm fighting against this in my *PUBLIC* university
Some prayer group set up shop and started posting about prayer groups. So I looked into it. They promote the idea of "reforming" gays. What a bunch of shit.

5. Bluebear are you serious? Thanks for posting the article
I'll be sure to email the Clinton Camp and inform them about this and ask what they want to do or say to the media about this. I am appalled about this.

13. ugh...how disappointing
Although I'd remove the phrase "and occult behavior" from your "Thanks, but..." statement. To me, the only thinks that belong on that list of "sinful practices" are stealing, dishonesty, and sexually exploitative or abusive behavior.

I guess we're going to be stuck voting for the one we see potential in.

19. It was a terrible decision
I am not sure whether to blame the candidates--it's hard to pull out of a thing called a "compassion form"--or to blame CNN. There are plenty of progressive religious schools in Pennsylvania; Swarthmore comes immediately to mind. It is renowned not only for its intellectual rigor, but also for its progressive, compassionate Quaker roots.

21. I'm getting the impression that you are a "one issue" type voter.
How sad. Could you consider that Obama's TEAM in The Executive Branch could consult with him and, as a consequence, he may become more open minded? No, I didn't think so. :(

22. Do you ever respond to the issue, or just criticize the poster? "How sad."
