more #'s on the "bitter" situation: MediaCurves
Edited on Mon Apr-14-08 10:42 PM by flowomo
this may have been posted before -- things come and go so quickly around here it's hard to keep track. But these folks have interesting "focus group"-type sessions on all kinds of things (ads, speeches, etc) and did one on Sen. Obama's response to the "bitter" charges. After you've watched the video, BE SURE to clink the link under the video box that says "view detailed results" -- some interesting numbers in that 6-page pdf.

OH, and check out the rest of their stuff on the front page of the site (at the bottom):

5. It's probably better if you take a look at the pdf yourself....
but the graphs show according to political affiliation and then by voter support the opinion of Obama's comments. What's really interesting is that they did the poll both before and after the group listened to Obama speak.

7. When you watch the video, the Clinton and McCain supporters are moving in synch
While the Obama and Undecided supporters move together.

22. That's what I think
I think a large share of the virulent Obama haters are racists, whether they know it or not. Dem or Rep.

23. You may be right. I just don't know, I can't quite get why anybody would hate him.
I've wondered if maybe it's because he is clearly brilliant; and a lot of people had bad early life experiences in school -- where they felt invisible or inferior because of the class system in schools -- the "smart" kids were treated as special, while the more average kids weren't given the same kind of attention and respect. In my junior high there were groups with a letter: like the "A" group who studied languages and advanced science while the "C" group took shop. That nurtured a lot of resentment between the classes back then (though it was all-white, there was no race factor added in.)

24. Yeah, there's nothing like an uppity black man who's clearly smarter than you
to get your dander up. I'm with you--I can't figure out why anyone would hate him. His message is one of co-operation, populism, and hope. He hasn't been negative in this campaign, or at least not until the last few days when he made fun of Hillary's credentials as a hunter. He speaks the truth even if it's uncomfortable for us. What's to hate?

26. After writing my last response to you I discovered that another poster had posted
something in response to me on another thread. The post contained a link to an outrageously blatantly racist video on YouTube, selected quotes from Obama's book about his father, clearly portraying Obama as a hater of white people.. it was shocking, and sickening to see this posted on DU. So maybe you're more right than I realized about the racism. (I saw the poster was since tombstoned, so somebody else must have alerted.)

It just really made me sad, and nauseated.

28. Yes, there is that. To his detractors, Obama's sheer genius is a reminder
of all the shortcomings they have. The contrast of his pure intentions to their dark hearts

is too terrifying to face head on. The almost effortless way Obama deconstructs the "false consciousness" of

the backwoods hicks in the small towns of America is unimaginably painful for this type to contemplate so

it gets turned into a type of antipathy to him. It's understandable, I just wish there was a way that we

could help them see the light, the light that is- Obama.

29. ok, I get your sarcasm. LOL
I don't think "we" need to help "them" see the light. I don't believe in an us and them at all, and as far as I can tell neither does Obama.

Those "backwoods" people are intelligent, feeling people. We all have much more in common than is typically recognized & acknowledged.

I think Obama is brilliant, frankly, I do, intellect-wise. But his real brilliance is that he sees himself in other people, and he talks to that which is universal in everyone.

Nobody is born with a dark heart.. that comes from lying to onesself and others, compromising one's own conscience. It's not a function of where you live, whether you have guns or not, what your religion is, even how you vote. It's a question of integrity, plain and simple.

17. What it shows is that people who think for themselves tend to be positively disposed toward Obama.
That includes some portion of both Clinton supporters and Republicans. A large number of Independents and of course, Obama supporters whether they think for themselves or not.
