Since 3/31 - Clinton +3, Obama -4

Clinton 55, Obama 39.

It is not looking good in the Hoosier state for next-door neighbor Obama.

Oregon, Montana, etc? What about the 150+ deficit she can't make up? What about the fact that he needs fewer superdelegates to win than Clinton? She cannot win the primary so it does not matter that she is ahead NOW in Indiana. Just like Penn, Indiana's polling will close much tighter than this.

Hillary will have a bombshell drop on her before this week is out. That's how these things work.

I was referring to the state at large; I'm used to dealing with Chicago people who think Indiana consists of five counties in the north.

My gut tells me that Gary leans towards Obama, but they also consistently elect liberals anyway, so whether or not the Chicago media has any influence at all is doubtful.

37. Nope - She learned of the Klan at an early age from her father
and the vestiges of it, culturally exist even to this day - it has more in common with Kentucky just to the south than with Illinois to the west. Even in this day there are LOTS of people who wouldn't vote for an AA to save the lives of their children...which might be the stakes by November.

IT is nasty and offensive but it is true. If you think Hillary is going to take Indiana because she has a base of any sort you're out of touch with the fact that the only person hated by the redneck population there MORE than Hillary is Barack.

How many points did Bush take Indiana by last election????

For dems, I believe Indiana is a waste. Kind of like Texas, without the hats.

58. The Klan had almost complete control of Indiana government in the 1920's.
Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 01:56 AM by TahitiNut
This is fairly well-known.

For example...
During the 1920s, five million Americans joined the Ku Klux Klan. Hoosiers turned out in record numbers, making Indiana 's Klan the largest, most enthusiastic, and most politically powerful Klan in the country. Between one-fourth and one-third of native-born white Hoosier males joined the group (see document 5), and there were auxiliary organizations for women and children. At its peak in 1925, Indiana 's Klan could boast more members than the Methodist Church, the state's leading denomination.

This “second” Klan was organized in 1915 in Atlanta . In 1920, the southern group began a national publicity campaign, and the first Indiana chapter opened in Evansville in the fall of that year. A few people joined, but then a huge membership drive led by D. C. Stephenson from 1922-1924 brought in 118,000 members across the state (see document 6). Stephenson moved to Indianapolis and started a newspaper, The Fiery Cross, which ran from December 1922 to February 1925. In 1924, Klan numbers overwhelmed the state's Republican Party and elected the governor (Ed Jackson), a majority in both houses of the legislature, and nearly all of the state's thirteen congressmen.

The Klan's legislative program for 1925—directed against parochial schools and Catholic influence in public schools—was a complete failure. But other problems proved more pressing. D. C. Stephenson, the leader (Grand Dragon) of the Klan in the state since 1923, was a charming personality and powerful orator; he was also arrogant, cunning, evil, and hedonistic. Early in 1925, he assaulted, raped, and held captive his young secretary Madge Oberholtzer, who took poison and died one month later. Stephenson was indicted, and when Governor Jackson (who had now distanced himself from the Klan) refused to pardon him, Stephenson leaked information that to Jackson 's trial for bribery (the governor was acquitted on a technicality).

As a political influence, the Klan faded quickly in Indiana, but its social and cultural influence dovetailed more subtly into Hoosier life. Klan literature capitalized on American racism, nativism, patriotism, and traditional moral and family values. Klan members targeted blacks, Catholics, and Jews, but also immigrants, political radicals, feminists, intellectuals, gamblers, bootleggers, thrill-seeking teenagers, and motion picture producers (see document 7). In one sense, Indiana's Klan was a populist organization: it engaged community interests, presented a program of action, and promised political changes. The Klan's message of patriotism, American superiority, and Protestant Christianity united native-born Hoosiers across many lines—gender, geography (north and south), class (white and blue collar), religious (many denominations of Protestants), and residential (urban and rural). But this populist club also propagated a negative and wicked influence. Klan members committed no lynching in Indiana, but their marches, burned crosses, brazen publications, and boycotts of community businesses evoked fear, intimidation, and lifelong trauma (see documents 2-4). Historian James Madison has observed that Indiana's Klan “cannot be dismissed as either an aberration or as simply the insidious appeal of a fanatical few. Nor should the Klan be seen as thoroughly dominating the state and accurately reflecting racist, violent, or provincial beliefs shared for all time by all Hoosiers” ( The Indiana Way, 291). Somewhere in the middle we find the meaning of the Klan in Indiana history.

Like a month of campaigning in Pennsylvania and Indiana.

Since March 11 in PA, he has been anywhere from 38-45%...until today's two polls...now it is back to 37-44%.

And Indiana...well let's not go there. In two weeks of campaigning, he has dropped 4 points, and Clinton has picked up 3. 55% solid support + 2 or 3% undecideds... :woohoo:

I seem to remember him easily winning Wisconsin when it was supposed to be close. I remember an absolute drubbing in SC, that was far outside the MOE. He lost by 2 in NH when he was supposedly winning. I will almost guarantee you won't get the numbers you are expecting. We won't know until 4/22 and 5/6, where Obama is looking great in NC, but again, it's too early to really tell, now isn't it?

23. Perhaps
I also saw a very dramatically rebounded lead for Clinton in a smaller survey from Pennsylvania, earlier today; this turnabout from a previously shrinking poll advantage was supposedly provoked by the same remarks in question. While I hope the criticism of his continually dunder-headed comments is eventually taken more seriously across a broader base, survey polls are just that, and I will wait for the actual primary results before I credit a change in the popular perception or his electability vs. McCain.

73. Fort Wayne, 2001
I don't remember the name of the mall, but it was a three-story indoor one. Fort Wayne has an international airport, so we're not talking about a small town here. No one batted an eyelash when I gasped at the display shirt in the window, either.

I'm sure things haven't changed in seven years, either.

89. Hillary will take...
IN, KY, PA.....

I am on the ground in all these states all the time. Have many friends in all three. Honestly... I hear more pro-Obama in PA than either of the other two.

The polls have been pretty consistant (what few we have) in KY and IN.

Prediction: After the next few Primaries... our "Dream Team" will be a reality. And McCain will not stand a chance against Clinton/Obama. (Or Obama/Clinton... however it shakes out.)

S

PS. I heard what Nancy Pelosi said and she is wrong. On sooooo many counts, including the war, she is dead wrong. Her ass will be grass if she keeps bashing our Democratic dream team.

90. She has a lead, but I doubt she'll win by 16.
We are 3 weeks from IN. Through this entire Primary, Obama has closed in on the states Hillary has had an early lead.

Hillary has never built on a lead that she had 3-6 weeks out. Obama consistently has built on his leads and cut into hers.

102. I suspect that may have a lot to do with Bill
Despite the hate (and I mean HATE) of him in some quarters here, his visits to the state have been high-profile, and Hoosiers aren't used to being considered useful in a presidential election, outside of being a credit card for Republican candidates.

It simply means that Obama has a lot of groundwork to do to catch up, but it is possible.

106. Obama, our next president, will carry Marion, Lake, and Monroe counties,
perhaps by enough of a % difference to ooff-set expected Clinton wins elsewhere. If he keeps it close in other counties and carries those three, IMO, he wins Indiana.

He will also win North Carolina that day as well, likely by a large margin.

That's true, but the entire rest of the state is solid red, and the Democrats in those areas will vote Hillary.

Southern Indiana is a **scary** place. I drove through back in 2003 and there was a guy with no shirt and no shoes (I thought most places had a sign for that) in the gas station behind me, and he was spitting chaw on the floor.

I don't see folks like that being real keen on Obama.

The good news is that Obama can lose both Indiana and Pennsylvania and still wrap this up handily.

Here is the recent polling. Survey USA has been remarkably accurate this Primary season, with a few exceptions.
