100 Mayors To Endorse Clinton Today in PA
TalkingPointsMemo reports:

A Clinton campaign source confirms to me that roughly 100 mayors from all over Pennsylvania will be endorsing her today at noon -- and a bunch of them will hit Obama over the "small town" comments.

Some twenty of them will be at the event in Harrisburg today, and number of these will pick up the "small town" refrain -- an effort by the Hillary campaign to get local officials who represent these small-town folks to keep the story going.

"These are the men and women who represent the people Senator Obama so casually dismissed as clinging to guns and religion," a Hillary campaign source says. "These mayors know better."

Obviously, the endorsements of individual lower-level officials don't mean a huge amount, but the Clinton campaign is hoping that a whole bunch of them echoing her criticism of Obama will add up to a chorus of sorts.

Edited on Tue Apr-15-08 10:39 AM by book_worm
her as a liar to counter her ad and constant reference to his comment on small towns when everybody who has a brain understands what his point was. I wonder which is worse? a relatively innocent mistake or a lie told over the course of several months to different audiences?

39. His not fighting back with an ad (like sniper lie) reminds me of how Kerry did not
smack back after they started on the swiftboat campaign. I'm looking for Obama to come out with a dynamite ad on this "bitter" stuff that will smack the RNC and Clinton together as singing the same words to the same song.

6. At some point, this beating of a dead horse will backfire.
The polls today are already showing that people don't give a damn about this media/Hillary created non-story. People might get sick of Hillary going over the cliff with this crap and start turning away from her.

11. What comeback? PA has always been hers to lose
She was ahead by 20 plus points when attention shifted to PA. If she doesn't win by high double-digits it will be considered a set back. If Obama can get it down to a single digit win it will be viewed as a loss for her.

16. no surprise, this is why we are in Iraq, why we have record number of forclosures
why we have lost the steel and so many other industries in this countries, because so many elected officials were happy with the status quo

After 8 years of bush, enabled by many POLITICIANS on both sides of the aisle, it will be quite interesting if people are ready for a change, or want to continue

I suspect many people ARE quite bitter. Dean touched on it with his 50 state strategy. That strategy was detested by those that controlled the party machinery at the time, and that included the likes of carville, who has openly expressed his contempt for Howard Dean

They are afraid of the Deans and Obamas. It threatens their fat rich lifestyles that they have gotten so use to at the expense of the people

Obama wasn't suppossed to make it. mccain wasn't supposed to make it. I think there is a message for both parties.

I also believe that Obama WILL be the next president because HE DOES REPRESENT CHANGE

23. one of the comments in tpm says ...
"Actually, Marc Ambinder over at the Atlantic says that:
Sources say Clinton will simply be rolling out a group of local mayors, some of whom have already announced their support for Hillary. Expect Allentown Mayor Ed Pawlowski (D), who officially committed to Clinton yesterday, to be the biggest billing. – Nora McAlvanah
These aren't new endorsements. "

If this is so, not such a big deal.

27. Is anyone really going to change their vote because of their mayor's endorsement?
I think not. Especially in small towns where in many cases the mayor was the village idiot that they talked into taking they job because no one else had time to do it. I have lived in small towns. Mayor of Palookaville isn't attracting a lot of up and comers.

These people often are influenced by what their elected officials say.

41. I could be influenced by an elected official that I liked and supported.
Say there was a complicated issue on the ballot that I did not have the time or inclination to study in depth but my mayor, who I respected and voted for, felt was very important.

People walk into the ballot box all the time with these little "slates" telling them who to vote for. They are either unable or unwilling to determine for themselves who the better candidate is, so they go with the recommendations of a group they align themselves with.

That's why a 30 second commercial can be so powerful. Not saying it's right, just saying it is the way it is.

29. Except these are not new endorsements.
Rehashing old news to create the impression that there is more news there:

Hillary Clinton's campaign will announce today that she has the support of 100 Pennsylvania mayors. The announcement is planned for noon at the Capitol in Harrisburg.

A number of mayors, including Harrisburg's Stephen R. Reed, picked Clinton over Barack Obama earlier this year. Clinton will not attend today's announcement. Her staff says she is preparing for Wednesday night's debate with Obama in Philadelphia.
