Reality BITES: Only 19 mayors show up for Hillary.

Clinton mayoral rally gets small turnout in Pa.
4/15/2008, 2:00 p.m. EDT
The Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Turnout at the "100 Mayors for Hillary" rally was a little under 20 percent.

Only 19 mayors of Pennsylvania cities showed up for Tuesday's rally in the Rotunda of the Pennsylvania Capitol. Other mayors' names were listed on placards supporting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Harrisburg Mayor Stephen Reed spoke for the group against the backdrop of a banner touting the 100 mayors. He criticized Clinton's rival, Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, for saying at a San Francisco fundraiser last week that some voters in small towns in Pennsylvania cling to guns or religion because of their frustration over their economic circumstances.

Should have kept those expectations down, I guess. But hey,

don't be bitter!

I was thinking, wow, her campaign's finally doing something right (though I would have probably waited a day or two). True to Clinton campaign form, what should have been a very nice positive has become a bit of an embarrassment.

She should have announced only those 19 today, then trickled the 81 remaining Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Edit: typo

When the headline is "100 Mayors to Endorse...", the expectation is that there will actually be 100 mayors at the rally for 100 mayors endorsing. Admit it, it was a LOUSY setup. And bad PR.

Who in their right mind would create a big media blitz and campaign of "100 mayors" complete with huge backboard and then never get all 100 there? Is she so unimportant to these Mayors that they could not take a day off and travel to the event?

29. The Capitol Rotunda is a magnificent setting IF you have a big group.
Typically the people gathering are arranged on the super wide sweeping staircase under this huge rotunda ringed with galleries. It's actually a replica of the Grand Staircase at the Paris Opera, if anyone can find a picture of that to post. Then the main speaker is at a podium set up at the foot of the staircase, with all the attendees behind him. Glorious photo op. People have weddings there, with the bride making a great entrance down the stair case. It's like 20 feet wide. Very rococo, with lots of gold gilding, pillars, etc.

HOWEVER, it would look sooooooooooo lame to have less than 20 people in this setting. Bet all the local tv stations were there for the event.

Very, very funny! And how poorly organized. One of the main skills of any successful politician

IS COUNTING YOUR DUCKS, I.E., VOTES BEFORE YOU CALL A BILL UP FOR CONSIDERATION.

48. There are 2,566 mayors in PA, and she could only get 19!
Local government in Pennsylvania is a mosaic of 5,149 individual units. All were established by the state or provincial government and operate under the laws of the Commonwealth. Each unit is distinct and independent of other local units, although they may overlap geographically and may act together to serve the public.

In January 2003, there were 67 counties, 56 cities, 961 boroughs, one incorporated town, 1,548 townships (91 first class; 1,457 second class), 501 school districts and 2,015 authorities.

82. A caller on the Ed Schultz show said that Rendell is threatening mayors by withholding monies if
they don't support Hillary. The caller said he had a family member employed in one of the offices. I'd like to know the inside scoop on that.
