Speier blasts Iraq war in first House speech

(04-11) 04:00 PDT Washington --

- Newly elected Democratic Rep. Jackie Speier of Hillsborough was sworn into Congress Thursday morning and promptly gave a fiery speech criticizing the Iraq policies of President Bush and likely GOP presidential nominee Sen. John McCain, leading some Republicans to boo and walk out of the House chamber.

Speier, who won a special election Tuesday to finish the term of the late Rep. Tom Lantos, has always been an outspoken lawmaker in her years as a San Mateo County supervisor, state assemblywoman and state senator. She served notice Thursday that she plans be just as aggressive as a member of the House.

"The process to bring the troops home must begin immediately," Speier told a packed House presided over by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco. "The president wants to stay the course and a man who wants to replace him suggests we could be in Iraq for 100 years. But Madam Speaker, history will not judge us kindly if we sacrifice four generations of Americans because of the folly of one."

While Democrats applauded, Republicans began a chorus of low boos. Some Republicans who had congratulated her just moments before, including Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista (San Diego County), walked out of the hall in protest.

Speier's 13-year-old daughter, Stephanie, who was watching from the House gallery, asked, "Why are they booing my mom?"........

Congresswoman Jackie Speier today announced her endorsement of Hillary Clinton for President. Speier was sworn in less than week ago as the newest Member of Congress, filling the vacancy of California’s 12th Congressional District.

"Nothing makes me more proud than to announce my endorsement of Hillary Clinton for President," said Speier. "As a woman, a lawmaker and a mother, I understand what electing Hillary will mean for this country. She will not only bring an extraordinary grasp of the issues to the White House, but also a uniquely feminine skill set - consensus building, negotiation, and patience - that will serve our nation well. As President, Hillary will set an example for how to run a country with diplomacy and restraint."

"I am thrilled to have the support of the newest Member of Congress, Jackie Speier," said Clinton. "Jackie has been a force to be reckoned with in California politics for more than two decades, standing up for children, families, and consumers across the state. Congress is fortunate to have someone with her fortitude and vision, and I look forward to working with her as we bring real change to Washington."

A lifelong resident of the San Francisco Bay Area, Speier’s career began when she served as legal counsel to Congressman Leo J. Ryan. While accompanying Congressman Ryan to Jonestown, Guyana in 1978, the Congressman was assassinated and Jackie was shot five times. Speier credits that experience with inspiring her life in public service.

In 1980, Speier was the first woman and youngest person ever elected to the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, where she served for six years. She followed that with 18 years in the California Legislature, where she received numerous awards including the American Medical Association’s "Outstanding Government Service Award" and the League of California Cities "Legislator of the Year."

22. "As a member of Congress, Speier also becomes a superdelegate"
As a member of Congress, Speier also becomes a superdelegate, who could play a key role in choosing the Democratic presidential nominee. Speier said she did not want to discuss presidential politics on her first day in office, but added that she has endorsed New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton.

35. And Speier's 'endorsement' is far from solid.
FORMER state Senator Jackie Speier made a surprising remark on the presidential race Thursday when she visited the Times for an editorial interview.
(snip)
The Times asked for her response to the fear among many Democrats that, if Clinton takes the fight all the way to party convention in late August, it will give Republican nominee John McCain more time to consolidate his party base, raise money and widen his lead in the polls.

We expected Speier to downplay the risk of a possible convention fight, which has many liberals worried about losing the election despite the fact that public opinion on the economy and the war in Iraq favors the Democrats.

Instead she replied, "I don't think it'll go to the convention."
(snip)
Even more surprising, Speier said that despite her endorsement of Clinton, she would decide whom to vote for after the primary, leaving open the possibility that she'd go for Obama.

She declined to say which candidate would get her vote, but her silence itself was revealing.

38. He's not going to lose, point number one
point number two, Speier doesn't think it will go to the convention (which means she may not actually expect Clinton to win, as Obama has an insurmountable delegate lead). Which makes her endorsement symbolic and not meaningful.

Ever hear of Jonestown? Well Jackie was one of the few that survived that attack that killed Rep. Leo Ryan. She was shot multiple times and played dead so the killers didn't shoot her more times. She had to lie in pool of her own blood for over 24 hours waiting for someone to help.

15 minutes of fame?

67. "uniquely feminine skill set"? HUH???
***** READ MY ENTIRE POST BEFORE YOU FLAME ME *****

Pray tell, are there also uniquely, masculine, Latino, White, Black, Asian, Democratic or Republican skill sets? As a woman who works in a heavily male-dominated field and is pretty high up in the food chain where I work, phrases like that make me cringe.

No matter what is on my resume or how well I present in an interview, I have been underestimated in *every* job I've ever had, and then went on to blow my competition away, which then set the bar even higher for newer employees.

The skills she cites - consensus building, negotiation, and patience - can easily be attributed to men or Republicans.

Consider how Republicans are patient enough to build their coalitions and think tanks to press agendas that are hurtful to the middle class and working people at large.

Consider how the average man usually negotiates a better salary than the average woman even accounting for all else (education, experience, etc) being equal.

Although HRC grates my nerves these days, I can appreciate that she's tenacious and resilient, even when things fall apart. We walk too fine a line when linking success - or the potential for success - to personal pride we may have in our gender, race, ethnic or some other type of affiliation.

68. Anyone who disses Jackie for this...
is a fucktard, plain and simple, and I say this as someone who cannot stand Hillary. Jackie has had an exemplary career locally -- she is a liberal hero, much in the veiw of Barbara Boxer.

I may disagree with her on her endorsement, but she is someone I have -- and will continue to -- a great deal of respect for.
