Bill insults young people, explains why tired, down-on-her-luck Hillary should be our next president

B. Clinton: Older Voters Aren’t Falling for Obama

Referring to Obama’s “cling” comments in Quakertown, Pennsylvania, the former president points to an age gap in some polls to try to defend his own record, his wife’s candidacy.

“Because once you’ve reached a certain age, you won’t sit there and listen to somebody tell you there’s really no difference between what happened in the Bush years and the Clinton years; that there’s not much difference in how small-town Pennsylvania fared when I was president, and in this decade.”

Bill Clinton: Older Voters Are Too Smart To Be Fooled By Obama

Apparently the emergency case of duct tape hasn’t arrived at Clinton campaign headquarters yet. This certainly doesn’t seem to be a way to appeal to younger voters in the primaries (or the general election) — and it certainly is not consistent with what former President Bill Clinton said just last week:

Older voters gravitate to Hillary Clinton because they’re too wise to be fooled by Barack Obama’s rhetoric, former president Bill Clinton told Pennsylvania voters today.

Clinton’s comments, to a packed high school gym about an hour north of Philadelphia, were one part presidential politics and one part legacy protection. His beef was with Obama’s contention that many of the problems facing the country today were simmering long before President Bush took office seven-plus years ago.

“I think there is a big reason there’s an age difference in a lot of these polls,” he said. “Because once you’ve reached a certain age, you won’t sit there and listen to somebody tell you there’s really no difference between what happened in the Bush years and the Clinton years; that there’s not much difference in how small-town Pennsylvania fared when I was president, and in this decade.”

“So I think it’s important that we get to the truth of this,” Clinton continued, going on to compare his and Bush’s record on jobs, family incomes, and other measures.

As the Boston Globe goes on to note, just last week Clinton suggested that older people (such as his wife Hillary Clinton) sometimes have memory problems around 11 p.m. But that was when Clinton was defending his wife on the Bosnia flap, and this time he was in attack mode:

At various points in his nearly hour-long appearance at Quakertown Community High School, Clinton cautioned the hundreds gathered to hear him against voting on history. (His defense of his White House record notwithstanding, of course.) Despite press coverage about how historic a campaign this is, Clinton said, “the history doesn’t amount to a hill of beans. All that matters is the future. Who will make the best future for you?”

That’s a fair enough point to make: voters should NOT cast their votes to vote for an African-American because he is an African American — and they should NOT cast their votes to vote for a woman because she is a woman. They should vote for the one each voter judges to be the better person to occupy the Oval Office.

But the problem with Bill Clinton’s campaigning is that more and more it resembles the kind of name-calling associated in recent years with Karl Rove-type campaigns, or zingers culled from a talk radio or cable talking heads show. To wit:

And later, after he had run through, in great detail, the ins and outs of America’s foreign and domestic policy challenges, Clinton returned to the theme of substance versus abstraction. Hillary Clinton, he said, would be a “servant leader,” and voters had to decide whether that was more important than electing a “symbolic leader.” “You gotta decide,” he said, as if he had laid out even arguments for each.

So unless voters opt for Hillary Clinton, they will be selecting a “symbolic leader.”

Bill asks for campaign donations

Posted: Tuesday, April 15, 2008 2:39 PM by Mark Murray
Filed Under: 2008, Clinton

From NBC/NJ's Mike Memoli
COATESVILLE, PA -- Bill Clinton made another pitch for campaign donations during a rally this morning in Pennsylvania, telling a supporters that his wife risks being “blown out” by Obama on the airwaves.

“I want you to get out there and work for her,” he told a crowd of about 200 at a union hall in this small town. “She can win being outspent -- the first two weeks of this television campaign she was outspent five-to-one on television. But she can’t be blown out.”

He asked the supporters to not only vote for Hillary and convince their undecided friends, but also ask them to “send $10 or $5 or $15 dollars on the Internet.” “I’m telling you, she’s your candidate. She is the best person you can elect to be president to change lives for the better,” he said.

Clinton often refers to the financial disparity in the race, noting that she has been outspent in past contests and prevailed. But that stump -- at least since the time of the Potomac Primary -- hasn’t always included an outright solicitation for more funds.

Hillary needs help paying the bills

Nothing says change like a multi-millionaire former First Lady and current Senator being unprepared, irresponsible and clinging to a failed strategy --- doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.

17. Asking for donations is fine but they are making Clinton look like a victim of Obama spending.
When the fact is Clinton is in this funding problem because of rampant spending before Super Tuesday on stuff that had little to do with votes.

So it will backfire.

22. Their inability to do their homework is not an indication of a lack of substance on Obama's part
Obviously, I'm not going to reject their votes because I want Obama to win. But basing your opinion of a candidate on some of his or her supporters is as absurd as me assuming Clinton supporters are ignorant old bigots because one of them told me "I won't vote for that n*****" when I knocked on her door canvassing for Obama.

34. As someone who is 23, I say Clinton is wrong.
And you're wrong.

I invested a lot of time into deciding who to support and read up on Obama. It wasn't because he was cool, but that I thought he would bring about real change. Clinton, in my mind, has always been the status quo candidate and I do not support the status quo.

31. Wisdom and Knowledge are two different things
Consciousness can occur at any age.
Old doesn't necessarily mean wiser and visa versa

The depth of one's experience is
limited to the consciousness of one's ability
to assimilate it, consume it and process it
actually and accurately without letting the pain of
life getting in the way too much..

As a 27 year old who has been deeply involved in politics for a long, long time now, this pretty much seals the deal that the Clintons will burn any bridge they have to to win. And they just burned mine.

Edited on Wed Apr-16-08 01:25 AM by fujiyama
The most negative thing I get from Obama about the two Clinton terms is that they were a let down.

And they were! Clinton had more potential than anyone and he let everyone down. And it's not the manufactured scandals. It's about time wasted and opportunities lost. Bush wasn't a let down. His playbook was already spelled out by the PNAC well before...
