San Francisco ~~ IMO, it's a Buzz Word |
|
Maybe because I have lived on the West Coast for over 45 years ~~ although all of it in SoCal ~~ that the label "San Francisco" to me means "gay" and that when certain pols use this terms over and over in negative statements, it is very offensive beyond just a dig at a beutiful Calif city where a lot of liberals live. To me, what is going on is gay bashing that is not very well hidden.
What prompted this thread was that on another thread I posted that "San Francisco" was a "code word" for "gay." I see all the recent linking of the "bitter" debate always labeled with having been done in San Francisco as being a whole ton of gay bashing and a way to promote in rural areas that Obama runs secretly with the wealthy gay crowd. The "closed door" remark to me was also a clue as to what the real message was. If this had not been said in San Francisco at a closed fund raiser, I doubt if the Hillary campaign would have given it much notice.
Any thoughts on this?

Be honest with yourself: It's a "San Franciso homosexuals" line of approach. For crying out freakin' loud, the event wasn't even IN SF. It was somewhere near SF in Northern Cali, but they want the San Francisco angle.

...unfortunately, I can remember jokes about SF being gay all the way back to when I was in HS in Calif.
I am wondering if those outside the state are aware of what the term "San Francisco values" really appears to refer to: IMO, it means that the speaker would like to spew out "gay lifestyle" but is trying to not look terribly like a total homophobic asshole.

...it most certainly does and it is offensive as hell. I have only been in the state of Calif for over 45 years now...and when SF is used in a negative way, that has always been the underlying meaning which ultimately comes out.
What is your problem with picking open the scab that so many are trying to hide under when they say stupid things like "San Francisco values?" What they mean is: "Gay lifestyle." The asshole speaker just does not want to look like and/or admit that he/she is a homophobe.
Why the hell do you think that some many of the Repukes refer to Pelosi's "San Francisco values?" What exactly do you think they were slamming? Liberals or something? It's that the city has a very high population of gays. That is what is being slammed and it offensive as all hell. If you are not offended...well, I don't know what I can say.

SF has a long tradition of having many different sorts of persons having lived there. My City by the Bay has one hell of a history that goes far beyond being "gay" to it.

And if you're suggesting that the right (and in this specific case the Clinton campaign) does not use San Francisco as code for "scary gay people," then you're being completely disingenuous. Since you've lived in SF, I KNOW you know better.
Am I suggesting she's a homophobe? Nope, I don't believe for one second that's the case. But I DO think she's dangling that code word out there to get the attention of, shall we say, the less evolved voters (hence my earlier mention of political expediency).
I'm not a "you guys," either. I was an Edwards supporter, and if we REALLY wanted a great, liberal candidate, we'd be voting for Elizabeth Edwards right now (one of the few prominent dems who is openly and unapologetically in favor of gay marriage). Not going to happen, but that's where my heart lies.

She mentioned the city he was in = not because she was making some sly gay smear, but because to Pennsylvanians, SF is a big, liberal city far removed from their experience. And yes, they know there are gay people there, too. But to pretend that Clinton was purposely trying to link Obama to "the gays" by mentioning SF is just stupid.

but if the roles were reversed and Obama was saying San Francisco and closed doors, you wouldn't automatically think gay code. You'd think he was making a point and telling the truth, but since it's Clinton you can't see it.
I think this whole finding racism, sexism and gay-ism where there is none, is just plain stupid. It does nothing to advance the dem party, it only hurts it. I don't automatically think gay when I hear SF, but I do think liberal, just the same way saying Hollywood says liberal, or latte.

My great great grandfather owned several saloons in San Francisco from abt. 1865-1910. They were all in the "Barbary Coast" section of the City which is the downtown portion today. For the most part, a large portion of the City as we know it today did not exist at that time. It was built up on landfill for the most part.

37. I have a huge whiskey decanter sitting on my antique dining room table as the centerpiece... |
|
...it is one of six decanters that had been in a San Francisco saloon at the turn of the century ~~ last one, not this one! It is the only one of the six that survived the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
I will look around and see if I can find the papers that came with the thing when I got it...like about 20 years ago...and see exactly where it came from. Wonder if there is any connection with your grand grandpop. Now wouldn't that be interesting!

48. I have a sh*tload of stuff that survived the 1906 quake |
|
Edited on Wed Apr-16-08 01:03 PM by CountAllVotes
The family has about died out and I have all of the stuff that was hauled out of the flat on Folsom street where my great grandfather lived. Two are drawings done by my grandfather dated 1905. I often wonder where they will end up when I am dead and gone. I tried to get some snotty assed place in the City to agree to take them but they were not interested being they were not drawings of San Francisco. What a bunch of idiots IMO.
My other old grandfather was the bookkeeper for a whiskey maker in SF and I found an empty bottle for sale on eBay with our family name on it along with the whiskey maker's name as well (odd perhaps but I guess my old grandfather wanted his name on the bottle as compensation for his work perhaps?). What a shocker this was and a great find as well as I had no idea that he was in business with anyone making booze. It cost me $20.00 total for it including shipping. :)
And yes, I have plenty of stories about old San Francisco. After the quake, many moved across the bay to Oakland/Berkeley. Many are still there today (in SF and Oakland/Berkeley, etc.). :)

57. Tell ya what....I will go digging for the papers on that decanter. |
|
The thing is HUGE....like about 2.5 feet tall...and is crystal and etched. IIRC, it came from England by ship, went around the tip of South America ~~ no Panama Canal ~~ and ended up in SF right around 1900.
Wow, I wish to hell I had a family history like yours. All four of my grandparents were born in Europe and I really have nothing that dates back to their homes and family life. You are truly blessed to have this! So interesting as to what you know about your roots. :hi:

I have a distant cousin whose great grandfather was also in the "business" as we call it (BOOZE). She collects the bottles that her grandfather's company made for bottling their whiskey. She has several best I know and they are all pre-prohibition, a few before 1900 I believe. I'll have to check with her to find out.
The "business" was BOOZE in the olden days, esp. with the Irish. Needless to say I am Irish myself, among other things thanks to my mother's side of the family.
It is quite the history and I sure did hear many stories. My father used to take us to Chinatown when we were kids in the 1950s. We'd buy sponge cakes and wander around Chinatown all day.
God, those were some good times! :)
Glad to find another old SFer as there aren't many of us left, just a few old Irish left from immigrant families that came after the Great Famine and sailed around the Cape Horn (as was my family's case).
The population of SF was only about 80,000 around 1880 or so. Needless to say, many of us are related to one another as the Irish tended to marry other Irish if possible. It didn't always work out that way much to my great grandmother's dismay.

I've got many other FAR BETTER stories, oh yes (like the reality of our family's infamous "sea captain"; we had a couple actually!) }( . Seems the drink took its toll on them from what I have found. I'm proud to be an old native and I still love to go to SF and visit. I no longer live in the City (moved away about 15 years ago) but I may move back some day, who knows?
I'll wait until after the next quake hits however. The Loma Prieta was enough for me although I still live on the San Andreas fault (sheesh, can't get away from it seemingly). I've done a lot of research on quakes and SF and wow, if I published my findings I bet people would pack up and leave in droves (no joke!). :scared:
:D
On edit: My personal avatar is a photograph of a political button I found in my uncle's house after he passed away. It belonged to my grandfather who claimed to be a life long Democrat. Upon searching the records, I found out he was a Republican until 1941. He lost his home and ended up living in "the dump" as he called it. After this time, a HUGE picture of FDR hung in his living room and the word "Republican" was never heard again in that house!

18. Down here the "code word city" is PalmSprings/CathedralCity |
|
because the Palm Springs area is also very gay-friendly..
Code words are infuriating, because the people who USE them, do so with malevolence, but then feign surprise when they are called on it..and the media always lets them slide..even though they also know full-well what was meant..
So many code words... They literally JUMP out at people who are thoughtful, but sneak into the subconscious of the ignorant :grr:
some I gnash my teeth about:
democRAT heritage family values latte' elite well-spoken intelligent liberal conservative environmentalist
The sad thing is that it really only matters WHO says these innocuous words, and a lot also depends on context..but many people have grown up with very little education in that area. They are literalists who do not question anything..
When my kids were in school and had to cut out current events from the paper, I would always make them examine the articles to "read between the lines", and try to figure out the message being sent, in addition to what was written..
One vivid example was a local pedestrian accident. The LA Times reported it as a man stepping off the curb, and being hit by a lady . Our local paper wrote the same story, but they also added that the man was an illegal immigrant who was jaywalking..and the lady who hit him was driving her kids to school in her mini-van.
My boys understood "slant" after that..
The facts of both stories were the same. man hit by vehicle..but the context and slant were very telling.

|
But that was before the "boom".. wouldn't recognize the place these days..
funny story...
I'm a bowling league secretary for two large leagues here (120 people on Tues & 150 on Wed).
anyway..one of my bowlers moved to Cat City, and told me about a league meeting they had for their league.. Most of the bowlers were gay, and very OUT.. They had a mixed league which, according to the rules, mandates a certain number of women per team, and a few teams wanted 4 men & no women.. They had a very civil meeting and ended up changing the rules and wrote their own..to say that it could be a mixed league as long as there was one woman in the LEAGUE.. ahh.. democracy in action :)

31. The first time I was ever in Cat City was back in 1963 when my cousin... |
|
...moved there since her hubbie was a Riv Sheriff's Deputy and his beat was out in that part of the desert. I can remember visiting her one summer day and it was like 113 degrees....and I was driving an old VW bug and I thought I would freaking DIE before I got to her house. Thank gawd for her swamp cooler!
Yep...it sure has changed. I used to love to go to the thrift shops out there...not a lot of that anymore. It really is very swank in many areas now. Years ago, like in the 1960s, it was really a pretty ratty place.
Great story about the bowling league! That whole desert area is a very interesting place. Very beautiful area of Calif ~~ I do love the desert, but cannot spend a lot of time there anymore because of the heat.

There was one I was in about 10 years ago...the Black Sea, I think...it was WONDERFUL. The friend I was with spoke a bit of Russian and I do a very small amount of Yiddish and we got by. A Russian rock band and dancing....and rows of tables...in long lines...piled with food. Bottles of vodka all over the place. The people? From babies to grammas in their babuskas. I have not been there for a long time. I think I should get my pals together and spend some time up the 405!

People have all these funny debates about the literal meaning of words and of buzz words -- code. But it's all about the context, isn't it? I don't know if Clinton meant it that way in this context but I'm sure she wouldn't mind if that meaning was evoked.

IMO it's the political atmosphere. Mayor Newsom performed a marriage ceremony for many LGBT couples when he first came into office, and just a couple weeks ago declared SF a safe zone for undocumented workers, promising all services available to them. Interesting political moves locally.
I'm still a n00b here in SF for all practical purposes, but IMO SF is viewed as the new Berkeley.
