To the "I'm not bitter" avatar people:

I'm just curious what about the last 7 years has allowed you to keep from becoming bitter from the shitty state our country is in.

I sure as hell know I'M bitter, and I'd like to know how those of you avoided it.

Answer up.

27. Depends.
In one sense I don't have a dog in this fight. The fact is I don't trust either one. Will I vote for Mccain, no. So that leaves me time for gun cleaning. I threw in church for the straw man effect.
My preference is to take the Congress with a solid majority. We managed to get Jim Webb in and next will be Mark Warner. I have no interest in reaching across the aisle, unless it's to pass the articles of impeachment over for signature.

30. I respect your view except that I wholly reject the notion of "there can be no compromise. "
There is a name for those who refuse to consider a common ground with those who hold different views. The name is "conservative."

9. Maybe you should.
Because it seems as if, by god, people are trying to score POLITICAL POINTS off something i'd say 95% of this forum would agree with.

Honestly, do you really disagree with what he meant, or do you disagree with what he SAID?

10. Honestly, he was answering a question about why he was having a hard time in PA
and in the complete context of the question and full answer, he was basically saying he won't win PA because he is black, basically calling Pennsylvanians bigots.

And if you listen to the whole exchange, you will come to the same conclusion.

And bitter implies a personality trait that is there all the time. Pissed does not.

13. We can parse words all we want.
Bitter vs. angry vs. pissed vs. whatever and their associations and connotations.

He never said he wouldn't win because he is black, look at this comment that directly preceded the "bitter" remarks:

"Obama's comments came at the end of a lengthy answer in which he rejected the notion that voters were passing him over simply for racial reasons, saying instead that his campaign of hope and change was having difficulty in "places where people feel most cynical about government."

"Everybody just ascribes it to 'white working-class . . . don't want to vote for the black guy,' " Obama said at the fundraiser.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/04/11/AR2008041103965_pf.html

It was simply a wording issue, and a minor one at that.

15. I couldn't disagree more.
What I took away was the idea that people retreat from involvement until all they have is the 2nd amendment or religion as something to believe in because Washington only looks out for the corporations, you know like REALITY.

42. I do agree with what he meant.
The challenge is, and I am being totally honest here...If you take what he said and then put it together with what Rev. Wright said, then it doesn't add up to be a very good thing for Obama. I believe Rev. Wright is a bitter man, rightly so in a number of aspects. And for Obama, 20 years of hearing a bitter mans sermons has to have an effect.

Like life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness? Would upholding the constitution do? Or the touchy feel-ly kind with puppies and kittens?

40. And somehow times have changed?
We just did almost eight years of piss down economics. Funny how history repeats itself. The Congress holds the purse. Take back the Congress. Restore the Constitution. And then you can get as warm and fuzzy as you like, directly after the war crimes trials. This is not about liberal values, this is about democracy.

14. Like I said upthread, that is a parsing issue.
Would it have made the statement fine if he had changed "bitter" to "angry"? Regardless of which word you use, the message behind it is the same. I'm bitter AND pissed off and doing something about it as well.

It just bothers me that there's so much outrage about something so stupid and unimportant.

Explain, Re-explain, Applogize, Explain, ...

Maybe if he thought about how it might sound outside of the echo-chamber of his surroundings, there wouldn't be any "outrage."

He explains his marginally controversial comments and apologizes, and suddenly that's unforgivable?

Meanwhile Hillary and her campaign flat out lie about Bosnia, and it gets laughed off and excused as a "misstatement".

33. I'm not bitter.
I might be if I were a Native American. The rest of us squatters got nothing to be bitter about, compared to them.

Anyway, as mentioned upthread, bitterness is counterproductive. It's like harboring a vengeful attitude, it just eats the vessel that contains it.
