Obamas Earned $4.2 Million in 2007, Tax Returns Show (Update2)

April 16 (Bloomberg) -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and his wife Michelle earned $4.2 million in 2007, more than they earned in the previous seven years combined, including $4 million in royalties from the sale of his books.

``It sounds like if you write a book, the best way you can sell it is to run for political office,'' said Tom Ochsenschlager, vice president of taxation at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Their charitable gifts included $35,000 to the anti-poverty group CARE and $26,700 to Trinity United Church, bringing their gifts there to $81,700 since 2005. Obama is under scrutiny because of comments by the church's senior pastor, Jeremiah Wright, that have been criticized as racist and unpatriotic.

Obama earned $4 million in royalties from his book ``The Audacity of Hope'' last year, more than the combined income of $3.8 million the couple earned from 2000-2006.

Those returns revealed the couple had given less than 1 percent of their income to charities in the years before he was elected to the Senate and began planning a run for president, well below the national average, even as they earned about $250,000 a year. They gave more than 5 percent to charity in 2005 and 2006 when they earned a combined $2.6 million from his book royalties.

I am disabled, and not able to work, but I truly believe in Obama and I was excited when I gave him $10.00. We support different candidates, but we are both proud to be able to donate to them.
