Hillary's Reviews Are In: 'The Winner,' 'Strong Presence,' 'In Her Element'

Hillary dominates Philadelphia focus group. “NYDIA HAN: The real take away is this. We now know who won the debate according to our focus group. Take a look. Senator Clinton is the debate winner, at least according to our focus group. 23% believe Senator Obama won while 50% believed Senator Clinton won.”

ABC News’ Rick Klein – ' Clinton is back to the strong presence we saw early in the cycle.'

NBC News’ Chuck Todd – Obama ‘did not have a good night.’

NBC News' Chuck Todd—Obama’s answer on Ayers and the flag ‘were simply weak.’ “His answer on Ayers and the flag question were simply weak; He seemed unprepared for them; Kinda surprising because he normally has a decent rant against "old politics" and yet "old politics" questions seemed to stump him.”

The Atlantic ’s Marc Ambinder – There's no way Obama could fared worse.

Washington Post’ Chris Cillizza— Obama ‘struggled quite a bit’ when asked about Rev. Wright. “…He struggled quite a bit more when asked to answer for Wright, his former pastor.” < Washington Post, The Fix, 4/16/08>

New York Times’ Katharine Seeyle: Hillary’s ‘in her element as she goes into details.’ "She’s becoming expansive, seemingly in her element as she goes into details; Mr. Obama does not look as thrilled to be still standing there."

Talking Points Memo’s Josh Marshall – Hillary ‘certainly seems more self-assured.' “She certainly seems more self-assured on the Iran question than Obama did. The question of extending an American security umbrella to Israel is very dicey. And he could clearly see he was on delicate territory.”

Philadelphia Inquirer blog – ‘Obama is again less certain, and rambles a bit.’ “Obama is again less certain, and rambles a bit when asked about the Washington D.C. gun ban. Gibson asks him to deny that he has ever advocated a complete ban on hand guns in 1996. Obama says no. But whatever the truth, no other answer is possible.” < Philadelphia Inquirer Blog, 4/16/08>

NBC News’ Matthew Berger – Obama ‘tried to have it both ways’ with Israel . “Obama's answer on an Iranian attack on Israel tried to seem to have it both ways: highlight his support for Israel but not lock him into treating an attack on Israel like an attack on the U.S. But it may have looked more like a no because it wasn't a firm yes. Clinton 's answer seemed more direct.”

8. From Josh Marshall:
"Can Hillary just come out and embrace a culture-war, swift-boating campaign against Obama? Please? Instead of this gonzo Lee Atwater by proxy stuff? Sigh..."

Are there any questions in this debate that aren't based on Republican attacks? Is affirmative action a major issue in this campaign? Did I miss that?

Hillary: The Republicans are so bad that I have to become one to save the Democratic party.

22. Hillary spoke of nuking Iran. That's not strength, that's neocon insanity!
What did Hillary mean about "massive retaliation" and permanent US umbrella in the Middle East? A point noted by Keith Olbermann, Rachel Maddow, and Pat Buchanan.

The term "massive retaliation" was coined during the Cold War to describe an American nuclear strike against an aggressor. Has Hillary gone further than Dick Cheney in tying the US to permanent warfare in the Middle East?

96. let me see - the purpose of a debate is to ANSWER THE QUESTIONS THE BEST
so when your candidate blows it bigtime, blame the QUESTIONS!!!

got it...

the questions were lame - and should have been expected, except that nobody DARED ask the "saint" such questions earlier, and he and his staff here all thought they were all "done" because - well - THEY said so...even tho they STILL haven't successfully answered "those" questions...

sorry. Welcome to the REAL world. The CRAP world.

praise for her performance during the entire debate. One of my favorite parts:

SENATOR OBAMA: I'm going to have to respond to this just really quickly, but by Senator Clinton's own vetting standards, I don't think she would make it, since President Clinton pardoned or commuted the sentences of two members of the Weather Underground, which I think is a slightly more significant act than me --

AUDIENCE MEMBER: (Applauds.)

MR. GIBSON: Please.

SENATOR OBAMA: -- than me serving on a board with somebody for actions that he did 40 years ago.

Look, there is no doubt that the Republicans will attack either of us. What I've been able to display during the course of this primary is that I can take a punch. I've taken some pretty good ones from Senator Clinton. And I don't begrudge her that. That's part of what the political contest is about.

I am looking forward to having a debate with John McCain, and I think every poll indicates that I am doing just as well, if not better, in pulling together the coalition that will defeat John McCain.

And when it comes to November, and people are going into the polling place, they're going to be asking, are we going to go through four more years of George Bush economic policies; are we going to go through four more years of George Bush foreign policy?

And if we as Democrats and if I as the nominee have put forward a clear vision for how we're going to move the country forward, deal with issues like energy dependence, lower gas prices, provide health care, get our troops out of Iraq, that is a debate that I'm happy to have and a debate that I'm confident I can win.

MR. GIBSON: And Senator Clinton, I'm getting out of balance in terms of time.

SENATOR CLINTON: I've noticed. (Laughs.)

MR. GIBSON: And you're getting shortchanged here. And so if you want to reply here, fine. If you want to wait, we'll do it in the next half hour.

SENATOR CLINTON: We can wait.

42. I love Hillary, but I just don't see what is making people say that
I watched the entire debate. Both candidates did fine. No one had an amazing night. No one made a terrible mistake. It was routine and predictable. Maybe I am just so frustrated by the whole campaign, and the unfair way I think Hillary has been treated, that I can't see victory when it happens. But I thought the best moment of the debate was Obama's words on Social Security (pointing out that the '83 commission raised taxes and the retirment age) while Hillary got a 5 second response before they cut to commercial.

In the end I think the election will turn on the "bitter" comments and whether they play or not. We can't really say based on polling since the polling has consistently been wrong throughout this campaign.

I thought they let Obama off the hook for the fact that he quite clearly sent supporters to a Hillary rally to boo her--I can't imagine a single member of the press core doesn't know that he did that. Your own supporters at a rally don't boo you at a rally unless you suddenly make a racial epithet or call for dropping a hydrogen bomb on Canada.

Steve

He wondered why Obama could give a good speech, but off the stump he always stammers, hems and haws.

Wake me up when we can start talking about the general. He's going to be the nominee. It doesn't take an IQ over 40 to get that. Good or bad, right or wrong, its time to start focusing on McCain.

61. LOL!
What are you people talking about? Obama CLEARLY won that debate.

Clinton couldn't get a point over on him. He got several over on her.

She finally had to admit that he could win the general election. That takes a lot of wind out of her sails.

When she responded to the Pastor thing, Obama brought up her own religious gaffes. Hell, whenever she tried to pin something on him he threw it right back with a better punch.

Obama actually got people to break down and applaud for him he did so well.

Hillary just sounded tired, used up, and stale. Obama answered tough questions with good-natured aplomb and intelligent responses.

Obama totally won that debate...I'll look forward to the polls showing the result. :)

Where is your link to the http://blog.hillaryclinton.com/">Clinton blog? " We now know who won the debate according to our focus group."

Also funny how they and you didn't include TPM's Josh Marshall other http://talkingpointsmemo.com/archives/189473.php">observance "8:48 PM ... Can Hillary just come out and embrace a culture-war, swift-boating campaign against Obama? Please? Instead of this gonzo Lee Atwater by proxy stuff? Sigh..."

I could care less what the fucking media and pundits have to say, they and you as a Democrat should be ashamed of this disgusting media display.

If I understand right (I missed the debates - working night shift these days), then the element of the debate was horse shit.

I'm an Obama supporter, but I really wouldn't want to state that Senator Clinton was "in her element" for this debate, because that's a pretty damn disparaging thing to say about her.

She looked competent. He looked tired.

Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama certainly did their homework before the 21st Democratic debate. Hillary Clinton knew what had been printed in the bulletin at Obama's church, and Obama knew the details of Bill Clinton's pardons. As Sen. Obama defended himself against elitism charges, he was clever enough to sneak in a reference to Hillary Clinton's famous 1992 line about how she didn't much bake cookies. This to prove that Yale-educated lawyers have just as much out-of-touch snob baggage as Harvard-educated lawyers do. Neither candidate had read up on the D.C. gun ban before the Supreme Court—because that way, they wouldn't have to take a stand on it? And they didn't want to get too specific about Social Security reforms, but on the details of the other's political vulnerabilities, they were quick like bunnies.
