I have no input in the matter and whomever he picks - he gets my vote.

2. It's not for us to say. It's a choice made by Kerry and his |

handlers. You know what they say: "That's politics!" ;-)

|
..he/she has SOME name recognition and a base of support large enough to help Kerry win. In other words, let Kerry choose someone who will either peel off support from Bush or Nader and not someone like Vilsack or some other non-entity chosen only to avoid offending anyone.

I care only because I am interested to see who he chooses and if it will be an indicator of how he will lead when he is elected.
It will not affect my vote in any way, shape or form-that would be just stupid considering the options.

I would like the VP, the person a heartbeat away from the presidency, to be able to step in ready for the job. This means foreign policy/national security weight in these dire and dangerous times. I would also like a liberal Dem. I can think of three potential VPs who meet that criteria: Clark, Graham, Gephardt. I'd be satisfied if Kerry picked one of them, but he has his own set of reasons for whatever his decision is ultimately and I will not cry over it. I'm for Kerry no matter who is on his ticket.

and I'd still vote for him. I have my preferences but since I rarely get what I want, I'm not going to be too demoralized if I don't get what I want yet again.
Kerry/Gilbey(my cat) works for me.

or if he digs long and hard to find a strongly conservative VP. If he does that I know that he doesn't want my vote.
On edit: Lieberman would be a fairly offensive choice as well.

17. Kerry is a fairly smart guy |
|
Whoever he picks, it will be based on whoever he thinks will aid his campaign the most, and since he has run successful campaigns fairly often, incliding one for the nomination for the democratic presidential candidacy, and came from far behind when everyon said his campaign was over, he seems fairly good at it.
Kerry also has a history of going his own way, and making his own choices regardless of what anyone else thinks, so I expect hm to do so in this choice as well.

I don't have a horse in this race. Sure there's some I like more than others but unless the guy's a total fool, it won't make much of a difference.
I'm enjoying watching the process and will be very interested in seeing who he picks as much as a way to reveal how Kerry thinks.
My prediction: It's not going to be Edwards, Clark or Gephardt.
I'm probably very wrong.

20. Well... I don't NOT care... |
|
I care about the VP as far as how he might affect the ticket/election. I've analyzed all the pro's and con's of the potentials. Then I think, eh, it's probably not gonna make that much of a diff anyways, people vote for the nominee, in the end.
Until I start to worry again... :)

More often than not, the VP pick does NOTHING to help a ticket. It may give a temporary boost, but overall it has little to do with whether or not people vote for the candidate.
The VP's main job is to be the attack dog, so that the presidential candidate doesn't look "undignified" in attacking her/his oppenent head on. A good VP will be able to do this, and score points off the opposing party's candidate. Lloyd Bentsen, Dukakis' VP choice, did this quite well in the 1988 VP debates with his "you're no Jack Kennedy" response to Qauyle (one of the best debate lines ever, IMHO).
At this point, nobody should give a damn about who the VP choice is. It really won't matter that much in the scheme of things.

|
Edited on Thu Jun-24-04 04:45 PM by wuushew
The VP selection can and often does have a huge effect on the election. How did Lieberman's conciliatory "debating" style and his self righteous attitude help in 2000?
Let us be perfectly frank, while Gephardt has some good stances on labor issues we are far far more likely to increase the number of people in the popular vote by selecting Edwards his charm and good looks hold much sway over swing voters. Gephardt will bring out the party faithful but thanks to Bush the country is pretty much divided as much as possible all ready. How this plays electorally is currently unknown to me. Gephardt might gives us Missouri's EV, but on the other hand Edwards brings the Southern strategy into play. I don't think Gephardt will change the outcome in the rest of the industrial Midwest and I predict a replay Gore v Bush 2000 in terms of red vs. blue states. Ohio is the real linchpin and I remain very worried about the state.
Despite the awful possibility of a Kerry assassination I find such a possibility extremely remote. As long as Kerry is the POTUS he sets the agenda and he instructs the VP on how to vote when the Senate is tied. So in that case whatever it takes to win the election is alright with me.
