University of Pennsylvania --Our Primary endorsement: Clinton

The Daily Pennsylvanian

University of Pennsylvania student newspaper

Hillary Clinton has the experience necessary to achieve her vision

……….

Clinton, on the other hand, is ready to lead this nation now. A successful champion for change, her experience in the Senate and as first lady gives her a better understanding of how Washington works. She has the ability to turn policy into reality. And her mastery of causes central to the Democratic Party's platform makes her better suited to challenge presumptive Republican nominee John McCain.

Take her leadership on health-care issues. In 1993, then-first lady Clinton urged America to embrace universal health care during her keynote speech at Penn's commencement. Unfortunately, she was far ahead of the times. Her proposal was met with fierce resistance and ultimately rejected.

Refusing to give up, Clinton helped to expand children's health insurance in the late 90's instead. More than a decade later, her new policies - and the concept of universal health care itself - enjoy wider support because of her past work. Indeed, of all the candidates still in the race, she offers the most comprehensive health care proposal. And as with most of her plans, she also has a way to fund it.

5. Penn Dems, on the other hand, endorsed Obama.
For Penn Dems, it's now all for Obama

Last night, the Penn Democrats endorsed Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for president, despite debate about whether to endorse a candidate at all.

The endorsement required a two-thirds majority to pass.

Following the vote, College sophomore Mukul Sharma, Penn Dems vice president, said the group will do "whatever it can" for Obama and wants to host a visit for either the senator or his surrogates before the April 22 Pennsylvania primary.

The Penn Dems will help organize events, walk door-to-door in the Philadelphia area and call registered voters on behalf of Obama's campaign.

17. Bad headline and dumb reasoning -- Hillary screwed up healthcvare
Bad headline: The U Penn Student Newspaper endorsed Clinton, not the university itself.

Second they screwed the pooch in their editorial. I guess they were too young at the time to pay attention:

"Take her leadership on health-care issues. In 1993, then-first lady Clinton urged America to embrace universal health care during her keynote speech at Penn's commencement. Unfortunately, she was far ahead of the times. Her proposal was met with fierce resistance and ultimately rejected."

No the public was clamoring for healthcare reform. perhaps they weren;t ready for single-payer universal care, but reform was a big election issue, and one of the reasons the Clintons got elected.

But Hillary screwed the pooch with bad leadership and management of the effort. She managed to take a popular issue and kill it.

And represents the thinking of why the endorsement occurred.

Add to that that many Penn students come from well-off New York families and...well.

I can't tell you the political make-up of PENN campus now but when I was there PENN had a large college republican base. Remember that Wharton business school, Michael Milken anyone?, is at PENN.

Milken: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Milken

My repub friend who went to Cornell and I joke that each of us went to the wrong school. PENN goes right while Cornell swings left.

When I was there, there was a big inicident involving the school paper when some *racist* jerk screamed "shut up you water buffalo" at a group of African-American women doing drill practice. It even hit the main new wires especially when a group of PENN students got together one morning and trashed all the free school papers in protest.

Water buffalo: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_buffalo_incident

My take from being there at Colbert last night, the audience applause went 60/40 pro Obama. Just one biased Obama supporter's take. IMHO, my take means about as much as the paper's -- both of them are just opinions and may not represent everyone.
