A KENNEDY CARAVAN OF OBAMA BACKERS

Ethel Kennedy, widow of Robert F. Kennedy, sings along with Gene Simonetti, 83, at the South Scranton Senior Center on Alder Street. MICHAEL J. MULLEN / STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER

Starting at 5:30 a.m., they piled into their Escalades and sedans: Mrs. Kennedy; her daughter, Rory; her son, Max, with his wife, Vicky, and daughters, Summer and Noah; Lackawanna County Commissioners Mike Washo and Corey O’Brien; Pat Casey, brother of Sen. Bob Casey Jr.; and actor Joe Pantoliano.

They visited about seven diners and Dunkin’ Donuts shops in Moosic, Scranton and Dunmore before they arrived at the South Side Senior Center.

“My mother has put the future of this country ahead of her friendship with the Clintons,” Max Kennedy told a group of seniors at the West Side Senior Center, shortly after making a similar speech on the South Side.

He explained that loyalty has always been important to their family, but the good of the United States was more important.

One woman in a wheelchair explained to Mrs. Kennedy that she once drove through a red light to see her husband, Bobby.

“Well, I went through a red light to see Sen. Obama,” replied Mrs. Kennedy, as she began to walk to the next, but certainly not the last, stop for the day.

1. This is very moving..thank you, Ethel Kennedy!
I can't help but wonder how Bobby Kennedy Jr feels now about "endorsing hilary"?

Thanks babylonsis..This is precious.

10. I think he made his choice based on what he knew and felt at the
time. I will give him the benefit of the doubt for the good he does. He probably has buyer's remorse now though.

21. That's what I keep hoping
..that he has buyer's remorse big time and wishes he would have had the vision that Teddy, Patrick, Caroline, Rory, and Maria had.

14. i'm guessing he didn't strongly prefer any candidates at the time
but he certainly doesn't seem like he supports her that much. at least not compared to the campaigning i saw him do for Kerry.

33. Your question, whats wrong with you? Here refresh your mind, she saw her BIL
murdered then stood beside her husband trying to help this country when he was murdered. They put this country first.

Edited on Sat Apr-19-08 07:16 PM by caligirl
but she managed to raise a bunch of productive kids including Rory who supports Obama. Rory got Ethel to join her in support of Obama. I remember that loyalty to the country over the man is what the Kennedy's stand for. Is that what you don't think much of?

36. There's a reason David was alone in a motel when he died.
I knew him well. I know what kind of a mother she was to him. I saw it.

42. Its always the parents fault isn't it, loosing a father to a killer and the grieving
family trying to pull life together and face the world had nothing to do with it. Your out of line talking about the family behind their back with a million elements of their personal family issues absent the light of day here from discussion, what friend does that. friends help and understand they don't use the friendship to score points.

40. Well...I didn't have a 'mother'...
and the woman who raised me was a piece of work. She had no business taking in any more kids. But..she was who she was, and I do not blame her for not being able to be what she could not be. Regardless of how friendly you were with David, I do not believe you are entitled to judge her life, or her person.

It was the first time Mrs. Kennedy had been on the campaign trail in 40 years, but she came to Pennsylvania after her 80th birthday this weekend to campaign for Mr. Obama.

Bless Ethel Kennedy!

Even her 'backyard' is having a problem with poor Hill. Now this MoveOn and NAFTA stuff hitting the fan, she's in a world of hurt.
