Noonan: Gone will be the "pantsuits that made her look like a small blond man with breasts"
Ouch.

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120846056666123713.html?mod=todays_columnists

Mrs. Clinton is transmitting, but people aren't receiving. She has been branded, tagged. She's been absorbed, understood and categorized. People have decided what they think, and it's not good.

It took George W. Bush five years to get to that point. It took her five intense months. Political historians will say her campaign sank with the mad Bosnia lie, but Bosnia broke through only because it expressed, crystallized, what people had already begun to think: too much mendacity there, too much manipulation.

<snip>

The next day the Washington Post had its latest numbers. A "majority of voters now view her as dishonest," it said, bluntly. Six in 10 said she was "not honest or trustworthy." Which itself doesn't tell us, really, anything new, but concretizes, like the Bosnia story, what is already known.

This is what I think will happen. At some future point Mrs. Clinton will leave, and at a more distant one she will try to come back. But more than one cycle will have to pass before she does. She'll need more than four years to shake off the impression she made in 2008. And this is how you'll know she's making another bid for the presidency. She will wear skirts. Gone will be the pantsuits that made her look like a small blond man with breasts. It's the new me, I wear skirts! Her first impulse is to think cosmetically. A long and weary life in politics has left her thinking this is the way to think.

8. Pantsuits are not the issue. What a moronic thing to say.
A working woman works better in pants no matter what she does unless she's a Flamenco dancer. I really hate this sexist criticism. It makes me want to yell at her to campaign in overalls if she wants to. I mean wearing a skirt may mean sixteen to twenty hours in pantyhose and even a girdle, not to mention the high heel shoes. I can't imagine any woman wanting to do that when she has to compete with men unless they too agree to wear the same items on the campaign trail. I'm not a Hillary fan but this kind of criticism is stupid. Women like Peggy Noonan are the reason that women haven't gained as much equality as they should because of the baggage of one of their own picking on them.

69. While I agree wholeheartedly with what you're saying...
I think the reason Hillary opts for pants is because the world makes fun of her, um... large legs. She's not a large person, but her legs are kind of out of proportion.

That said... I don't care if her legs are too big, too small or the wrong color. I couldn't give two shits.

I'm just pointing out that Hill can't win either way: if she wears pants, she looks like a man. If she wears skirts, then the media will talk about her big thighs.

It's still a very sexist world.

10. Noonan, like most rightwing elitists, is unbearable. I wonder what she thinks of her boyfriend W's
war right now.

At first she complains that Clinton waited too long to get serious, and from that Noonan transitions into the nasty line quoted in the OP, and how Hillary will come back to run for the presidency wearing skirts. What a serious observation by such a profound Serious Journalist!

And then this snooty elitist has the absolute gall to talk about Obama's two problems: his youth (obviously a fair argument, given one paragraph), and the elitism of Barack and Michelle Obama (given four paragraphs).

Reagrdless of who she shills for, I have always admired her ability to put forth a speech that is personally moving. Whether or not you care for her, or my opinion in general, is not relevant to me.

This sentiment applied to the posters beneath as well, who speculate that my soul is tainted because I find her to be excellent at her craft. :eyes:

If you want a look into my soul, as W so craptacularly did with Pootie-poot, check out my sorry excuse for a "journal". My 1st post is in there which basically explains my thought process. You can search the rest if you are so inclined, but be forewarned, there's not much interesting there. :)

46. She's a bit of a plagiarist
IIRC some of the lines she used in the speech that Reagan gave in response to the space shuttle tragedy were lifted from a poem called "High Flight".

http://www.deltaweb.co.uk/spitfire/hiflight.htm

That's one example I'm aware of, no doubt there are others.

but I would say her body of work is one big blemish.

Her alleged speechwriting skills are meaningless when she uses them to promote and empower leaders who harm our country, exploit the poor, steal from the middle class and otherwise damage our country and its citizens.

But I am trying to separate my own emotions from my viewpoints. What I felt 20 years ago was not what I felt 10 years ago, and is not what I feel now, and probably won't feel 10 years into the future.

To always be absoutely sure of your own opinion reminds me of the idiot we currently have as president.

Please note that these comments are *not* directed at you - you just happen to be the only one who decided to engage in a serious discussion. I'll let you have the last word while I go ride bikes with my girls.

76. Most of her effective work
was done within the context of Bush I's campaign. I believe she coined the phrases "thousand points of light" and "kindler, gentler nation". Those two phrases don't exactly tickle my underarriage, but there's no denying that they were powerful political soundbites which helped to shape the debate.

All I'm saying is, I have always admired her *skill*. Within the context of the OP's thread (pantsuits and skirts), I am dissapointed that she would write something so inconsequential and vapid.

You are subscribing to the same 'with-us-or-agin-us' paradigm that serves the dunce in the Oval Office so well.

I sense you are the sort of person who skims only the parts of newspapers and internet sites that already conform to your limited worldview.

Would that you could understand there is something most everybody can offer to the state of discourse, you might find yourself a bit less myopic and perhaps somewhat enlightened.

Work on that. It will be good for you and the people around you that love you.

17. It's true though - Much like her name! (Story inside)
She was Hillary Rodham during Bill's first term as Governor of Arkansas. The people of Ark didn't like it and it played a HUGE role in Bill's boot after term 1. During his comeback campaign against Frank White she used, and made it known she wanted to be called (true - look it up) "Mrs. Bill Clinton." Then, it was just Hillary Clinton. After Bill's rise to the presidency - she wanted to be known as Hillary Rodham-Clinton. She runs for (and serves in) the U.S. Senate using both. She runs for president in 2008 using "Hillary Clinton."

So, no, I don't think Noonan is too far off. Though, it was rather tacky in how it was said.

21. Good Grief.
First Noonan creates a (imaginary) scenario for Sen. Clinton, then she gives us all the thinking that (she imagines) goes into every aspect of the (imagined) scenario and why Sen. Clinton (she imagines) thinks these particular (imaginary) things, and then she puts the cherry on top by telling us that when Sen. Clinton does all this, exactly what this entirely Noonan-generated and Noonan-imagined scenario tells us about Sen. Clinton and her motives.

And that, Dear Friends, is what is known as propaganda.

I'm repeating myself, but let me say it once more: if you'll go to the high school nearest you and get the latest student paper, you will find better journalistic skills there than Peggy Noonan can ever hope to attain. How a brain-dead, talent-free, Reagan corpse-worshipping nonentity like her managed to get a position at the WSJ is absolutely astounding. I'll tell you how bad she is: Peggy Noonan makes Maureen Dowd look like a competent journalist.

57. No, it isn't
Certain forms of attack are over the line. Call me old-fashioned but there needs to be some standard of civility.

52. Enough already with the WSJ op-eds
I hate it when they are anti-Obama (i.e., Fund's the other day) and anti-Clinton. We end up rallying around RW talking points.

Attacking Hillary's dress sense is pretty low, even for Noonan.

If I ever agreed with anything she said, even once, even about a candidate I oppose, I'd have to rethink my entire worldview. She's that bad.

73. Obama supporter here - Don't listen to anything Ms. Noonan has to say, she's a RW Hack
She was a Reagan speech writer. She wrote a screed about Hillary Clinton that was criticized by the publishing world. She is as useful as Newsmax and Fox. Blech! :puke:

87. You know...I hope Chelsea clinton catches Noonan's...
...keening, human swizzle-stick ass in a Beltway bathroom and handles her the way she should be for this shitty little crack. Bill can't do it as it'd be too rough and an uneven match, but Chelsea could step up and put this drunken, moon-eyed sot where she oughtta be for this—whether you're a Clinton supporter or not.

Fig. 1. The old-school Pam Grier slap in the grille:

“Pyow!”

Then,

Fig. 2 A kick in the gut.

“Hnnnngh!”

Finally, the coup de grace...

Fig. 3. Finish with the deep-conditioning, Queen Latifah toilet-drowning.

Regardless of what you may think of Senator Clinton, Noonan's out of line here. Big time.

:)
