Hillary supporters, they have been "shacked up" for 12 years (CNN says "companion of 12 years"). Just what we need, the country's future being decided by old folks with committment issues....
:sarcasm:

1. Is this that "unity" I keep hearing about?
Obama supporters are so good at building bridges!

2. I haven't heard the term "shacked up" for years......throwback to my youth.
The polite name for it was Common Law marriage - usually employed when kids were involved.

4. I think the term "companion of 12 years" is used when there are
Social Security check issues involved.

8. Polite term?

That is a legal term...however, common law marriages have been out lawed for quite a few years. I have not heard that reference in probably over 20 years.

11. All I know is when I was a kid adults used "common law marriage"
when there were kids and "shacked up" when there were no kids. I always figured it was a way of protecting the kids. I am sure the original meaning of common law marriage was legal but I doubt that the adults in my community knew whose "marriage" was legal and whose was not.

13. As an attorney you should know that's not true
Common law marriages are accepted and quite valid in some states, including Texas.

Otherwise, I really don't get the point of this thread, but then I don't understand 90% of what's posted here anymore since I don't get the vitriol from either side.

16. Sorry...I should have been more clear...
...I was referring only to California. IIRC, it was out lawed in in Calif in 1932. However, a couple having a legal common law marriage in another state ~~ that is marriage is recognized in California.

6. Well, you can counter it my my mom and her "husband"
who have also been shacked up by approx 12 years and are voting for Obama.

So I think they are splitting the old, horny, but feel no need to get married, vote.

:)

(And don't you DARE tell Mom that I referred to her as "old". I have my position in the will to consider!)

12. dirty pigs
we went on a family vacation to NH a couple of years ago and this older couple was telling my wife and I how great sex is now with an empty nest. It was one of those TMI moments for sure-but it gave us hope that someday we too will be able to walk around the house naked if our daughters and their babies and 15 year old son would stay away every once in a while.

17. Yeah, if they'd been married more than once in 12 years like 50% of people,
THAT would show character and commitment.

God forbid anyone fail to take the symbolic Sanctity of Marriage less than seriously. And put on a flag pin, while your at it!
