Do you think most of us are "Democratic activists"?
There are many forms of activism.

Walking in protest lines, running meet ups, working phone banks, volunteering for the Dem booth at the county fair, passing out yard signs, canvassing neighborhoods, and even sharing strategy-thoughts-wisdom on DU.

In my view, being active in the democratic process and in particular, to the benefit of our BIG BLUE tent is being an activist.

So who was Hillary talking about? I assume most of us.

Thank you for being an activist! :applause: :kick: :patriot:

peace~:)

1. NO, most Dems are not activists.. most trudge off to their jobs and about
every four years trudge off to the polls to vote for the lesser of two weevils.. DU has more activist members I believe. It does not represent the majority of Americans.

5. Slacktivists.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slacktivism

Slacktivism (sometimes slactivism) is a portmanteau formed out of the words slacker and activism. It is a pejorative term that describes taking painless "feel-good" measures in support of an issue or social cause that have little or no practical effect other than to make the person doing it feel satisfaction. A person that engages in such activity is called a slacktivist.

Examples of slacktivist activities include signing internet petitions, the wearing of wristbands ("awareness bracelets") with political messages, putting a ribbon magnet on a vehicle, joining a Facebook group, and taking part in short-term boycotts such as Buy Nothing Day or Earth Hour.

7. I see. So an "Anonymous Self-Pontificator" is merely one form of "Slacktivism"
I think that shoe fits.

I learn something new everyday.

The fun part about DU is - I can do it when I should be doing something else. Like occasionally at work (shhhhhhh). :hi:

On Edit: And when I'm enjoying life off the internet, it includes being very active in my local Dem party and participating in big and small marches here in the NW (Portland).

4. If you participate at all beyond showing up to vote: yes.
If you donate phone put up signs blog talk up your friends protest - you are far more politically active than 99.999% of the population, you are a political activist. We are a nation of mouse potatoes. Most lunchroom conversations rarely rise above discourse on american idol.

6. I agree.
That is what is lacking in our government...the fact that people don't participate and aren't active has left the governing class or "the elites" to think they can decide everything for us. When they govern in ways that benefit and enrich themselves, they gain from the fact that we don't notice.

Activism keeps government accountable. A lack of activism turns us into the peon class completely at the mercy of decisions made by a few.

Lastly, it is a lot easier for the moneyed interest to make a few hundred people beholden to them, than to have to do good by millions of us.

Beware the politician who disrespects citizen action.

I think activism isn't so much about actions as it is about simply giving a damn about the role the governmental/political process plays in your life. Volunteering is fine, of course, but paying attention is quite enough. Therefore, I would definitely consider DU-ers activists because of their interest in discussing what's going on.

Oh, and you're welcome, RiverStone!

13. LMAO. At DU?
Hell no. Most are internet warriors that just come here for the "thrill" of the battle.

Some of us are activists. I work with my local Dem party as a precinct captain.

But MOST Duers are armchair warriors. Nothing more.

14. I am more active in political campaigns...
than at any other time in my life. I do what I can..probably not nearly enough to be considered an 'activist', but I do not believe my contributions are without merit.

15. I write letters. I talk to people if they're willing to engage in discussion.
Mostly I grind my teeth, but that's not activism. That's bruxism. :D

17. She was appealing to the stodgy, J. Press and pearl necklace, Liebercrat...
...DLC lever-pullers she's been in bed with for years.

These are the folks who've been ensconced at the state party control levers for years and DO. NOT. WANT. ANYONE. ROCKING. THEIR. BOAT.

The boat-rockers? People who without the help (and often against the will) of fence-straddling toadies like Rahm Emanuel and Harold Ford have managed to get people like Virginia's Jim Webb, Montana's Jon Tester, and Donna Edwards elected.

Empowered regular people. They are the enemy.

Which is pretty damned shitty when you consider it.

But NOT as shitty as her being caught on tape mouthing a Karl Rove written lie about Move On's NOT supporting action in Afghanistan. THAT is a lie, and is something Rove has said repeatedly on Fox News and the like to smear the organization. What chaps me is...who was she talking to (to get dough from) who would be down with hearing that sort of bullshit?

The answer isn't pretty I would think.
