Student type voters: What is your plan to protect your vote next week?
Edited on Sat Apr-19-08 01:31 PM by sfexpat2000
(I could also ask military and colorful voters because they are subjected to a lot of the same tactics, but let's keep it simple for now.)

It's easier to target some voting blocks than others, and students seem to be the easiest of all. They're busy, they're usually still deferring to their "elders", they often have a "home" and a "school" address and many of them are first time voters so they don't yet know the ropes.

When you put all those elements together, you have a voting situation that is easier to manipulate than just about anyone else's. Busy people sometimes don't have time to double check their information -- like, if that reg form they filled out was FILED -- and they may show up to the polls alone. Young people who are polite to adults may not be willing to challenge a poll worker who turns them away. In 2004, student absentee ballots seemed to go missing at a higher rate, and students got robocalls threatening their financial aid if they voted in the wrong place. Also, student precincts were under equipped in several locations so students had to wait in hours-long lines -- which is a form of vote suppression, you betcha.

What can you or students who are your friends or relatives do to protect that vote next week? What is your plan? :hi:

On edit: This should have been directed at all student voters, not just Obama voters. Edited.

5. I think the students will be just fine
The ones I've met in Allentown have awesome student leaders who know about the game and have set up action plans for what to do if the old games are played.

9. That's so good to hear. Mark Crispin Miller says, vote in a group.
Try to take peeps with you so if you're challenged, you have back up.

That probably won't happen -- but, it has been known to happen. :hi:

6. If you are voting on campus, do a walk-through Monday. Find out where, when, and what you will need.

This was my 18-year-old daughter's first year voting in CA.
She volunteered in her precinct, but went the day before and voted early.

Proud dad of a young Obama cult member.

15. Sure thing!
I know that the Obama campaign is trying to put poll watchers in polling places that they feel are the most vulnerable to challenges to voters. They also have attorneys who have volunteered to help on election day with problems. Whatever you do, if you are told you are not permitted to vote DON'T LEAVE WITHOUT VOTING.

You should see if there is someone who can help you resolve the problem, or check with your county's voter registration office. If nothing else, insist on being given a provisional ballot.

16. People need to check if they are truly registered to vote, first.
And the going with a friend or friends strategy is good, too, to help support you in case of a problem.

23. I noticed last week that student IDs are being messed with by the Thugs.
Edited on Sat Apr-19-08 11:11 PM by sfexpat2000
If they have a driver's license, they should bring that and anything that has their right address on it -- utility bill, etc.

I think in IN, there is no date on the Student ID, so it is being challenged, fwiw.

25. Our student IDs have dates.
So we're good. The driver's license thing is touchy because so many of these students are out-of-staters, voting under student domicile. A good number of the kids also have passports, as a back up.

When I voted in 2004 I didn't have a state ID, so I brought my:
-Student ID
-Voter registration card
-Passport
-Lease agreement
-Utility bill
-Tax returns

I had a freaking dossier prepared. I was not going to be denied. As it turned out, I got through with the student ID just fine.

20. The people we registered are good.
The Obama campaign has this covered in PA. They are looking out for the folks they registered.

As for protecting the vote, we are confident in our plan.

our registrations have a way of disappearing, right?

I'm glad you guys have a plan. Make sure they check their reg early and often. :hi:

28. You're right about '04, the Youth DID turn out to vote, but Blackwell knew what to do
He MADE sure they didn't have enough MACHINES at their polling locations. I watched the kids on C-SPAN explain how they had been there for hours because there were NOT enough machines.

Then the CorpoMedia continued to spread the FALSE information that the Youth did not show up to vote
:grr:

Thanks for this thread sfexpat2000. It should come in handy.:yourock:
