Changing thread... new theme: Why it isn't 1988 anymore
Edited on Sat Apr-19-08 09:38 PM by scheming daemons

EDIT: I didn't realize SNL was a repeat tonight..... so I'm changing my thread.

The new point is:

McCain and Clinton are both behaving as if the tactics that worked in 1988 against Dukakis will work today.

The flag-pin crap is nothing more than the pledge of allegiance crap against Dukakis. Lee Atwater wanted to make Dukakis look "un-American" to the electorate, and he succeeded. But why did he succeed?

Because in 1988, the economy wasn't doing too badly by historical standards.

In 1988, we weren't mired in a war/occupation in a foreign land.

In 1988, Reagan was a relatively popular President leaving the scene.... not the dismal 35% approval rating for Dubya.

The "dont-vote-for-the-liberal-with-the-funny-name-and-questionable-patriotism" theme worked in 1988 because A) Dukakis wasn't the dynamic inspirational leader that Obama is and B) Times were relatively good.

20 years later... things are much different.

And McCain and Hillary haven't quite figured that out yet.

6. Wait! I know! It isn't 1988 because...
...Rick Astley doesn't have a top 10 hit in the charts! Do I win?
