a funny, yet very sad story from Texas
I am a male 58 yr. old hippie type 6th grade science teacher, (Yes I still wear a ponytail most of the time, I cut it off about every two years and give it to Locks of Love.) My wife and I are completely Obama supporters, I was a precinct captain, and give to his campaign the 25th of each month. I was in a 7-11 this morning buying a soft drink when a short shaved headed, tattooed male, who looked very much like a skinhead, told me he couldn't believe that drinks cost so much now. I said, yeah, I think our economy is on the way down. He replied, "Well, it is gonna get worse if we elect that Moslem fellow, Osama, for president. I said, " I didn't know that Osama Ben Laden was running for president. Was he a republican? He said, "Hell no, that black guy, whatever his name is." I told him that his name was Barack Obama and that I was a supporter who was still actively working in his campaign, making phone calls to Pennsylvania, and North Carolina. You would have thought I had hit him with a baseball bat. He started to sputter, and make weird noises. When he got to the counter he told the lady behind him that that old guy is going to vote for that Moslem black guy. She said, "What, I have seen him on TV wearing a turban and that I think he was the anti-Christ. " I told her, "No, the antichrist had been on the scene for quite awhile, and that his name was George Bush." The skinhead went bersek, told me that that Black guy would never get us out of Irag or Afghanistan. I told him that he didn't want to get out of Afghanistan just Irag, and to face it fellow, he would be our next president. He spluttered and shook his head all the way out to his car. I just stood in the 7-11 and laughed out loud

It is sometimes lonely to be a progressive in Texas. This state is so redneck. By the way my county is sending 10 Barack delegates and 9 Hillary delegates to the state convention. She actually lost in Texas because of our two step primary caucus system.

6. that's funny, but like you said, sad too
Today I took a drive to Vermont, and an elderly lady wearing a huge hat with a flower on it was sitting next to me at a restaurant . I overheard her say that "Obama gets the young people vote only because they think that 'Obama' is a 'cool' name", and she also said " Hillary Clinton is sooo stupid". Then she started talking about John Kerry, and lets just say that she totally believed in the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth thing. Funny but sad.

13. I have had several of those kinds of conversations and I don't think those guys are regis. to vote
But the other day I was at the gym and in the steam room and it was unusually full and there was a guy who was on a full scale rant about Obama, his preacher the whole 9 yards, all straight off of Limbaugh

He mentioned a million dollar house for Rev. Wright and I quietly broke in and asked him if he had seen a picture of the house? he said no but got real quiet and then went on about the Rev. Wright's sermon and I asked him if had read the entire sermon. Now he was curious. He asked me why that would make a difference and I told him that if you took the Story of Christ and just quoted what happened on Good Friday everyone would think that God was a prick too.

I told him that I had read the entire sermon and as somebody who had attended Seminary found it mainstream but that it did have some dramatic flourishes typical of older African American pastors.

Well now this guy who was an obvious conservative was real curious and we moved to the sauna and there was a group of about 7 guys. One of the other guys interupted us when we got heated and asked me who I thought he should vote for and I told him I didn't have a clue and just worried about my vote. My only point is that if your going to talk about this or think about it you should do the research. If you think its relevant then don't talk about the pastor's house google it and look at it. Yes its nice but given that he had 8000 member church it wasn't that special and certainly not anything better than any white pastor with an 8000 member church.

Each of the guys in the jacuzzi then went around and said what their number one issue was and it was clear that almost all of them were thinking very seriously about the issues Obama was talking about but that no one wanted to stand up to the conservative guy publicly.

Eventually everyone left and it was just me and the conservative guy and he told me that he was really glad that he had run into me because his daughter was volunteering in college for Obama and it had become a big problem because he was happy that she was active in politics but everything he heard from Rush was so terrible. I didn't change his opinion (or maybe I did) but now he knew he could talk to is daughter about it and he was real interested in listening now to what she had to say. He had fucking tears in his eyes.

I looked up and realized that I had left my wife sitting in the lobby waiting for me for an hour and had to rush out so I could face the ass whipping I so deserved from her lol.

Aren't these personal stories the best part of DU>

Thankfully my country also favored Obama by about 70%, but I'm convinced it's because of the heavy black population. I know far too many who have that skinhead's mentality!

Being also from Texas I know what you're talking about. At my Precinct Convention I had an old man say something along those lines.

Obama is a Mooslim, and doesn't place his hand on the bible. I told him that wasn't true. Afterwards I wished I had asked him where he heard that crap. It sounded like something straight off of Rush Limpballs. Of course he caucused for Hillary, but didn't want to stick around to be a delegate. He had a little group of Grannies for Hillary, and made an accusation that I wouldn't turn in the paperwork. Big assumption on their part, because the very next day I turned in the ALL the paperwork, just as it was from the night before.

Will you be going to the State convention?.?.?

He will win the GE. I don't really think Texas will be in play, but it will be a heck of a lot closer than it was in 2000 and 2004.

24. I faced a somewhat similar situation In Llano in 2004
I was just finishing pumping gas at a convenience store. I had a Dean Sticker, Kerry/Edwards sticker, and some other stuff that could get me shot most any day down there. I was living way out in the country then, and my attitude was: any day I don't get shot at is a good day.

Well anyway, this guy pulls up beside me -stops his pickup between me and the store- and says: "Are you really gonna' vote fer Kerry?" sounding halfway between morally indignant and disbelieving - like he had seen a ghost.

"Yep," I replied "I believe I will."

Then he comes to the full realization of what kind of uncivilized, commie scum of the earth he was dealing with (do I really have to use the:sarcasm: thingy here?) And with all of the moral indignation he can muster (good thing for him he didn't have to actually spell "moral indignation") he lays it all on the line:

"You - piece - of (wait for it) S-H-E-E-I-T!"

Well, I was aghast I tell you. Flaberghasted. Taken aback. Dumbfounded.
Me, a piece of sheeit! I had been called out ... and it wasn't even high noon ... What would I do now that my Godless Commie name had been sheeit upon?

Actually, for once In my life I knew exactly what to say.

"Gee," I said as if I was sorry for offending him. "I sure hope that makes you feel better ... because it really makes you look stupid."

And now, he was taken aback. Flaberghasted. Dumbfounded.
He sort of mumbled under his breath, like he was afraid an adult was going to call his mother, "well, good day to ya." and drove off.

that took place ONLY 20 years ago and the attitudes of the people portrayed in the book probably have not changed all that significantly in those 20 years. I don't think a Senator Obama or a Senator Clinton could win Texas.

as a fellow Texan, :hi:

I am surprised that my daughter and I haven't been run off the road yet with our Obama stickers on our cars.

But on a good note, a young man saw my Obama pin on my purse, that I keep there proudly, and said, Youre voting for him too? I said, sure am! He said, a lot of his friends were too. That really warmed my heart.

30. I'm in TX. Co-worker came into break room and said that that Obama fella is a muslim....
her husband told her. She had a look of shock on her face, as she filled her styrofoam cup with coffee. There were 2 other women in the break room with us. She went on for a few more sentences about him being a muslim, and maybe the anti-christ, etc., etc.

I joined right in and nodded and said, "Yes, and I even heard that he kills babies in his house!" And she nodded her head in the affirmative, until she realized I wasn't serious. And until she realized how stupid what she has just said was, and how ready she was to agree to just about anything negative about him.

I think there are e-mails floating around about him. The Repubs are big on those fictitious e-mails about politicians, tort reform, etc. There were several about Kerry in 2004 (untruths, of course, according to snopes.com).

In fact, my county was bright bright blue in 2006! And Obama won my district in the primaries by some huge ass margin I don't even remember anymore because it was such a complete blowout.

I saw a guy with an Obama bumper sticker on his truck today and honked and gave him a thumbs up. He smiled and did the same. Figure I might as well give a bit of support.

42. You have my sympathy from this Texan
I live in Collin County Texas - north of Dallas, in particular Plano. We lovingly call this place the South Africa of Texas. I have my Obama yard sign. I wear my Obama button. My husband and my three kids wear our Obama T-Shirts to every church gathering, cub scout camp trip, etc. I went to Barnes & Noble to buy my New Republic Magazine. Obama was on the cover. The check out lady said, did you know that he's a Muslim. I saw it on the news. I acted shocked and said what news said that? She said Sean Hannity. I told her. That's not news, sweetie. That's Pravda. Of course she didn't know what that meant - but she looked shocked. I told her "that's our next president. So get used to it!" Some lady in line behind me just busted a gut laughing and gave me the ole thumbs up. I hear you and I too am sorry * is from Texas. :toast:
