Poll question: Opinions, Who will McCain pick for VP? Why is he waiting?
Have been wondering this for a while. Most folks think it is because he wants to see who his Dem opponent will in order to build a ticket to counter the other side.

After hearing all the talk in 2004 (and recently repeated) about Kerry picking McCain as a way to reach across the aisle and have a "Unity Ticket", I have to wonder this:

If Obama is the Nominee, will McCain offer the VP slot to Clinton for his own "Unity Ticket"?

4. Mccain
If he picks a unity ticket It will be with Lieberman since he still claims to be a so called
Independent Democrat. When this race Is over Hillary will make a statement supporting Obama and then go home to New York and be quiet and hope Mccain wins. The big question will be can Bill clinton make
statements supporting Obama and then be quiet.

5. Some hack or other is likely drawing up a short list -- or a long short list,
or a long list of GOP potential nominees short on intelligence --

for Sen. McCain.

With the GOP as insane and obnoxious as it is, who on earth knows which names will eventually make that list?

I think maybe Tim Pawlenty, Jim Talent, Kindasleazy, Tom Coburn, Kay Baily, Rob Portman, Fred Thompson -- my god the list of dreadful slugs just goes on and on.

6. I wouldn't be surprised if it's been discussed "behind the scenes"
At times, it has seemed that the Hillary campaign and the Grandpa McLoon campaign are working together.

Maybe that's because Mark Penn and Charlie Black DO work together?

Apart from that, we know that McCain considered joining the DLC in 2001, and that the talk of a Kerry/McCain ticket in 2004 originated from him. So it wouldn't be too surprising if either of them, or their slimy campaigns, put this together.

And if it ain't Hillary, it will probably be Holy Joe, so the DLC will more than likely endorse the McLoony ticket one way or the other.

7. As far as i know, no one has ever chosen a VP running mate
until they were nominated by their respective parties.

As an aside, and I am serious about this, whomever the R VP candidate is, everyone should take a good hard look when he/she is announced. I really don't think McCain is capable of a full term, not that I believe he'll be elected anyway. But he's looking pretty poorly as far as health goes.

9. Only the nominee can select a VP -- first-time voters seem to be making up their own rules
Nobody's nominated till the convention.

13. Dukakis announced his (Bentsen) in Texarkana, TX/AR before the convention
Did it on the steps of the Fed Court House, straddles the state line. Kennedy had made a campaign stop there in 1960, so was trying to link with Camelot. Didn't work out in the end.

Think that many have announced their running mates after they had the nomination sewn up, as McCain has now. Didn't Clinton name Gore before the convention in '98?

Anyway, think McCain is waiting to see who he's up against to announce. Pretty sure he's got two lists based on which one wins the Dem nomination.

Does the McCain camp think they have the fundie vote locked up or is Huck too much of a wild card?

Can you even imagine what the Dems it would do with his tapes? Misogyny anyone?

Seems unlikely in a jam band, but I do remember seeing him on TV mentioning something about conservative leanings or whatever. He also got busted by the State Patrol here in Washington state a year or two ago. They pulled him over for speeding, and found a small arsenal of weapons in his SUV. At least he did have the good sense to mount a somewhat secure gun vault in the vehicle. (see picture)

22. Lieberman
Interesting artcle in the NY Times today....

Gore-Lieberman: A Hyphen Apart? Try Poles
Jim Bourg/Reuters, via Corbis.

Imagine for a moment the Supreme Court had gone the other way in Bush v. Gore in 2000. We would now be in year eight of the Gore-Lieberman administration. Well, maybe not the Lieberman part.

There’s nothing new about friction between a president and vice president (Franklin Roosevelt and Henry Wallace and Lyndon Johnson and Hubert Humphrey are but two examples) or between failed running mates (John F. Kerry and John Edwards are only the most recent). But rarely have two members of a presidential ticket gone in such starkly different directions as former Vice President Al Gore and Senator Joseph I. Lieberman. It is tempting, for fans of counterfactual history, to play out what kind of drama might have emerged in a White House under that ticket’s auspices.

Not only have Mr. Gore and Mr. Lieberman staked out diametrically opposite positions on the Iraq war, Mr. Gore went so far as to endorse one of Mr. Lieberman’s presidential rivals in 2004, Howard Dean, largely because of his opposition to the invasion. Mr. Lieberman is campaigning for the presumptive Republican presidential nominee, Senator John McCain of Arizona.

23. It's fun to imagine Johm McSame picking Hillary
But after I finished chuckling, I had to go that "outa yer f'n mind" choice.

Come on. I loathe the approach Hillary's taking in these rather pathetic final weeks, but she's not going to run over to the Goopers at this point.
