Nader needs signatures for N.M. ballot
STEVE TERRELL | The New Mexican
June 29, 2004

Although the national Green Party rejected Ralph Nader's efforts to get its endorsement for his presidential campaign, his state coordinator said Monday she believes his chances of getting a ballot slot in New Mexico are good.

Carol Miller, a state Green Party co-chairwoman who is working for Nader, said Monday she is hopeful supporters will gather the required 14,527 petition signatures by Sept. 7 to get their man on the ballot.

"I'm optimistic because of the number of volunteers and their enthusiasm," said Miller. She said the campaign has about 70 volunteers gathering signatures. She said the campaign is attempting to get 25,000 signatures.

But Miller said New Mexico is the hardest state in the United States for an independent candidate to get on the ballot.

1. Any eligible voter who wants him on the ballot can sign, right ?
I'm sure there are many who would be happy to oblige. No problem. And give him money too. Been done before.

4. I don't believe Nader has qualified for any state other than the 7 states
he has access to from the right-wing Reform Party endorsement. Those include Florida, Michigan and Colorado. I think the other 4 are solid "red" states.

5. Thanks for the info
Florida is a big problem (no surprise there, right) but I think Kerry will win decisively in Michigan and Bush will take Colorado by a fair margin. Let's just hope Nader doesn't get on in Ohio and Wisconsin.

7. hardest state? HAH!
NM is not even close to be the hardest state. Here in NC an independent has to get 93,000 sigs to get on the ballot. A new party has to get 60,000. Texas is even tougher.
