McCain: Elizabeth Edwards claim ‘a cheap shot’
McCain: Elizabeth Edwards claim ‘a cheap shot’
By Bob Cusack and Klaus Marre

During a somewhat testy interview with George Stephanopoulos, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Sunday that Elizabeth Edwards took a “cheap shot” at him by claiming that the presidential candidate had government healthcare his whole life.

Stephanopoulos, noting Edwards’ recent comments about McCain in The Wall Street Journal, said, “Her point is why shouldn’t every American be able to get the kind of healthcare that members of Congress get and members of the military get?”

A smiling McCain said, “It’s a cheap shot but I did have a period of time where I didn’t have very good healthcare, I had it from another government. Look, I know what it’s like not to have healthcare.” McCain was referring to the five-and-a-half years he spent as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

Later, in describing his differences with Democrats on healthcare, he added, “in all due respect to Elizabeth Edwards,” who has cancer.

McCain appeared irked at times with the tenor of Stephanopoulos’s questions as the two men interrupted each other on several occasions. When the “This Week” host repeatedly challenged whether Congress would agree to McCain’s plan to significantly cut the size of the government, the senator noted his critics and suggested Stephanopoulos was one of them “by the tenor of your questions.”

3. I have serious doubts
about a man his age serving as President. There should be an age limit to the office. The pressures alone are hard on a younger man...

2. Other than his time in the Hanoi Hilton...
He did, indeed, have government health care his entire life. One could say he earned it, but then, why would the average American also not "earn" it?

John McCain's "straight talk" doesn't add up.

B-)

4. That's not a cheep shot. and if he's comparing healthcare in Vietnam to
lack of healthcare in America, then he should know that its pretty miserable for many Americans and the system needs a complete overhaul.

5. McCain
uses every opportunity to remind us that he was a POW. What that has to do with the state of health care in this country, I have no idea.

10. I respect his service too
But respect cant be a lifetime thing, eventually he has to prove he's still deserving of respect.

After his sucking up to Bush the last 4+ years, he hasnt proven he still deserves it.

7. A cheap shot?
Maybe those five years are the only way he can relate to what 47 million Americans are going through. I suggest he recall them to memory and keep them there.

8. McCain's temper and age are gonna be trouble for him.
At some point he will explode. He practices a lot of restraint, and tends to smile when he's angry to try and hide it (as I believe he has admitted before). But when he starts taking GE fire, he will lose it at some point.

13. hey McCain, I've seen the pictures of you getting healthcare in Vietnam
Treated like little lord Fauntleroy in a soft white hospital bed while the average Vietnamese peasant has never seen a doctor their entire life. You got excellent government healthcare even as a prisoner-of-war, you jerk!
