Many Missouri Dems want Edwards instead of Gephardt
Posted on Tue, Jun. 29, 2004

For several Missouri Democratic leaders, Gephardt not their favorite for No. 2

SCOTT CHARTON

Associated Press

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Missouri favorite son Dick Gephardt is not the favorite vice presidential candidate of several rank-and-file state Democratic leaders looking to deliver its 11 electoral votes to John Kerry.

Asked which prospective running mate would help Kerry win the battleground state, eight of 11 county chairmen and chairwomen selected at random by The Associated Press chose Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina. Gephardt and Edwards are among those Kerry is reported to be considering.

Only two of the county officials chose Gephardt, and one picked Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack. President Bush won Missouri by just 3 percentage points in 2000.

"Gephardt just doesn't have the get-up-and-go that Edwards has," said Irma Brannum of Poplar Bluff, the Butler County party chairwoman. "Edwards is the exciting one," said St. Charles County chairman Joe Koester.

1. Dick can be Secretary of Labor
or HHS. I don't want his name on the ballot.

2. I can believe that
The representive from Truman's hometown, Ike Sheldon I think his name is endorsed Edwards in the primaries. I do like Gephardt but I do think Edwards is quite popular in Missouri, didn't he finish 2nd there during the primaries?

3. That's hardly a scientific survey
...But I would vote for Edwards over Rose-Garden-Dick.

15. Actually, it is a better method than many used in internet polls.
How many chairpersons does Missouri have? If it's hundreds, 11 picked at random (which is what the reporter claims) wouldn't be a very good sample. But if it's 25, 11 is a pretty reasonable size.

4. We must have been posting at the same time..
Again this supports that Edwards is not a regional candidate but is strong in other places then just the South. He has a very strong following in the midwest as well.

5. certainly is true, in fact Ive heard that Edwards could
help expand us in the midwest, which could make us win Minnesota, Wisconsin which we should win as is but maybe by more.

7. Gep/Edwards

I'm not a big Edwards fan, but I think he'd be a much better choice than Gephardt.

I think Edwards brings some good things to a ticket, I'm just not sure he's the best choice. But better by far than Gephardt.

8. Speaking as a Kansan
who lives 60 mile from Missouri I can say that I have heard from many in the KC area that they do not like Gep and do not really know him since he spends most of his time it the St. Louis area and rarely goes west of there. This may not be the case (those from the area could tell you with more authority) but it is what I have heard. Clark would also do well in the mid west, I believe from what I have heard around here that he would actually do better than Edwards.

12. Edwards would definately generate more enthusiasm. And as much as I like
Kerry, he could use a dose of enthusiasm to rev up his campaign. Plus choosing a strong VP who is a good campaigner shows some self confidence that voters respond positively to. Edwards will definately help Kerry the most in getting elected, imo. He will make a good VP as well - and he will would be set up for a successful presidential run after 2 Kerry terms. I don't see any downside here, except that it would probably shut out Hillary if Kerry wins twice.

13. I'd take my chances with Edwards in 2012
He has a much better chance of winning than Hillary ever would.

14. That is one spin I'm worried about...
I'm worried if Kerry picks Gephardt or Graham that the GOP will start with story that he's done that to leave the door open for Hillary in '12. I'm already hearing the conservatives go after Hillary for coming here and supporting Patty Murray, our Senator WA. The GOP party head is claiming he's thrilled Hillary is here because she shows how Liberal Patty is.

There's just still some of the GOP who foam at the mouth at the name Clinton. I'ld hate to see them use that against Kerry. Or claim his VP pick is purely a political move to help Hillary in the future. I don't think that would be true at all, but I can see them twist it.
