Michael Moore Endorses Barack Obama
Edited on Mon Apr-21-08 04:22 AM by Hissyspit
Via E-Mail:

My Vote's for Obama (if I could vote) ...by Michael Moore

April 21st, 2008

Friends,

I don't get to vote for President this primary season. I live in Michigan. The party leaders (both here and in D.C.) couldn't get their act together, and thus our votes will not be counted.

So, if you live in Pennsylvania, can you do me a favor? Will you please cast my vote -- and yours -- on Tuesday for Senator Barack Obama?

I haven't spoken publicly 'til now as to who I would vote for, primarily for two reasons: 1) Who cares?; and 2) I (and most people I know) don't give a rat's ass whose name is on the ballot in November, as long as there's a picture of JFK and FDR riding a donkey at the top of the ballot, and the word "Democratic" next to the candidate's name.

Seriously, I know so many people who don't care if the name under the Big "D" is Dancer, Prancer, Clinton or Blitzen. It can be Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Barry Obama or the Dalai Lama.

Well, that sounded good last year, but over the past two months, the actions and words of Hillary Clinton have gone from being merely disappointing to downright disgusting. I guess the debate last week was the final straw. I've watched Senator Clinton and her husband play this game of appealing to the worst side of white people, but last Wednesday, when she hurled the name "Farrakhan" out of nowhere, well that's when the silly season came to an early end for me. She said the "F" word to scare white people, pure and simple. Of course, Obama has no connection to Farrakhan. But, according to Senator Clinton, Obama's pastor does -- AND the "church bulletin" once included a Los Angeles Times op-ed from some guy with Hamas! No, not the church bulletin!

This sleazy attempt to smear Obama was brilliantly explained the following night by Stephen Colbert. He pointed out that if Obama is supported by Ted Kennedy, who is Catholic, and the Catholic Church is led by a Pope who was in the Hitler Youth, that can mean only one thing: OBAMA LOVES HITLER!

Yes, Senator Clinton, that's how you sounded. Like you were nuts. Like you were a bigot stoking the fires of stupidity. How sad that I would ever have to write those words about you. You have devoted your life to good causes and good deeds. And now to throw it all away for an office you can't win unless you smear the black man so much that the superdelegates cry "Uncle (Tom)" and give it all to you.

But that can't happen. You cast your die when you voted to start this bloody war. When you did that you were like Moses who lost it for a moment and, because of that, was prohibited from entering the Promised Land.

How sad for a country that wanted to see the first woman elected to the White House. That day will come -- but it won't be you. We'll have to wait for the current Democratic governor of Kansas to run in 2016 (you read it here first!).

There are those who say Obama isn't ready, or he's voted wrong on this or that. But that's looking at the trees and not the forest. What we are witnessing is not just a candidate but a profound, massive public movement for change. My endorsement is more for Obama The Movement than it is for Obama the candidate.

That is not to take anything away from this exceptional man. But what's going on is bigger than him at this point, and that's a good thing for the country. Because, when he wins in November, that Obama Movement is going to have to stay alert and active. Corporate America is not going to give up their hold on our government just because we say so. President Obama is going to need a nation of millions to stand behind him.

I know some of you will say, 'Mike, what have the Democrats done to deserve our vote?' That's a damn good question. In November of '06, the country loudly sent a message that we wanted the war to end. Yet the Democrats have done nothing. So why should we be so eager to line up happily behind them?

I'll tell you why. Because I can't stand one more friggin' minute of this administration and the permanent, irreversible damage it has done to our people and to this world. I'm almost at the point where I don't care if the Democrats don't have a backbone or a kneebone or a thought in their dizzy little heads. Just as long as their name ain't "Bush" and the word "Republican" is not beside theirs on the ballot, then that's good enough for me.

I, like the majority of Americans, have been pummeled senseless for 8 long years. That's why I will join millions of citizens and stagger into the voting booth come November, like a boxer in the 12th round, all bloodied and bruised with one eye swollen shut, looking for the only thing that matters -- that big "D" on the ballot.

Don't get me wrong. I lost my rose-colored glasses a long time ago.

It's foolish to see the Democrats as anything but a nicer version of a party that exists to do the bidding of the corporate elite in this country. Any endorsement of a Democrat must be done with this acknowledgement and a hope that one day we will have a party that'll represent the people first, and laws that allow that party an equal voice.

Finally, I want to say a word about the basic decency I have seen in Mr. Obama. Mrs. Clinton continues to throw the Rev. Wright up in his face as part of her mission to keep stoking the fears of White America. Every time she does this I shout at the TV, "Say it, Obama! Say that when she and her husband were having marital difficulties regarding Monica Lewinsky, who did she and Bill bring to the White House for 'spiritual counseling?' THE REVEREND JEREMIAH WRIGHT!"

But no, Obama won't throw that at her. It wouldn't be right. It wouldn't be decent. She's been through enough hurt. And so he remains silent and takes the mud she throws in his face.

That's why the crowds who come to see him are so large. That's why he'll take us down a more decent path. That's why I would vote for him if Michigan were allowed to have an election.

But the question I keep hearing is... 'can he win? Can he win in November?' In the distance we hear the siren of the death train called the Straight Talk Express. We know it's possible to hear the words "President McCain" on January 20th. We know there are still many Americans who will never vote for a black man. Hillary knows it, too. She's counting on it.

Pennsylvania, the state that gave birth to this great country, has a chance to set things right. It has not had a moment to shine like this since 1787 when our Constitution was written there. In that Constitution, they wrote that a black man or woman was only "three fifths" human. On Tuesday, the good people of Pennsylvania have a chance for redemption.

Yours,
Michael Moore

Ugly.

Michael Moore was right about Bushco in Fahrenheit 911. He was right when he spoke up at the Academy Awards (speaking FOR the other documentary nominees, by the way) and everyone who booed looks silly to history.

Calling him a "fat ass" would make Rush Limbaugh proud, "DemVet."

109. Do you have *any* idea how it is that Moore came to be well known?
You call him a "so-called celebrity", but do you know how he became well-known? It was because he made documentaries that were so hard-hitting that they upset the powers-that-be enough to let their dogs out to attack him.

Did you object to 'Roger & Me' or 'Fahrenheit 911'?

125. Michael Moore isn't just a "so-called celebrity."
He's an important political figure whom those of us on the left have relied on to basically do the media's job for them for the last seven years of the Chimp administration. He's been a tireless crusader for progressive causes big and small. But I think it's pretty clear from your choice of candidate that you don't give two shits about progressive causes.

Not that I don't support MM's opinion of Obama, but weren't some of the facts shown in F911 debunked? Not that it wasnt a powerful piece but if he uld have just stuck to the facts only it may have been more credible and powerful. That IMHO costed us an election and a possible impeachment by making the rest of us look like liars.

Edited on Tue Apr-22-08 01:09 PM by shagsak
But if he had just been straight forward and honest on his entire approach, the doc may have been shorter, but there would have been no argument FOR the bush admin to grasp onto. And they would have to step up and take the blame simply as a defense to the media storm. Hell, bush may have faced impeachment, we'll never know. Instead, it was all over the blogosphere (and elsewhere) that 50% of the documentary was debunked (entire websites and peoples lives devoted to it) and so MM's and his fellow supporting democrats' credibility suffered. That's the power and commitment of repukes in action.

I know there isn't a firm connection of the two, but since most people didn't believe MM (again because he didn't get all of his facts straight), they didn't see bush as the villain that he was and still is. Bush basically skated by definitively punching holes in MM's work.

Don't get me wrong, I am not BLAMING MM for bush's second term, but if anyone had a clear shot to expose him and his cronies, MM was the guy. Obviously, since his documentaries are typically in the public eye.

62. I am not a giant Moore fan either but was that warranted?
We have to stop attacking our allies because they talk stuff about Senator Clinton. These are the people who kept Bush's bads to the spotlight over the years and helped people finally realize Bush is not good for this country and the constitution.

Now I do not like Moore too much as I think he is a little too forward when dealing with troop deaths. However to say he is leading the blind is a defamatory remark.

But, Barack is a decent human being and he knows all to well that would be sinking to a new low. However, Hillary doesn't have a problem with sinking to the bottom of the slime pit.

That has been one of my major concerns with her campaign. There is no depth to her callous smears.

He's the Kiss of Death. Just ask Wesley Clark.

Notice in his ringing "endorsement" of Obama, all he did was bash Clinton and did nothing to explain why Obama is such a good choice.

Whoever Moore endorses in the General Election will LOSE, plain and simple. If Obama by some miracle wins the Primary, he better reject Moore's endorsement or we're looking at 4 years of President McCain.

48. Sorry -- I don't understand why Moore waited until today.
Anyone who has seen Moore's movie Fahrenheit 9-11 knows that he has a huge problem with all those members of Congress who voted to give Bush-Cheney the authorization to attack Iraq back in 2002.

Barack Obama is on the record as opposing the authorization back in October 2002.

Moore starts his message by claiming that last year he would have been happy to vote for any Democrat - no matter who got the nomination. This is the guy who campaigned alongside Ralph Nader back in 2000!

I find it very strange that Michael Moore waited until today to endorse Barack Obama.

I find it even more strange that Moore is not fighting or even calling for a do-over in Michigan.

If we believe in Democracy - then we have to let Democrats in Michigan and Florida take part in this process.

They pretty much said that MM endorsed Obama because Clinton is disgusting, and then they sarcastically chuckled about MM sure knowing how to win friends and influence. That made me laugh a little too.

But after reading this, I see that his endorsement is well thought out and voices the concerns of many of us who were once on the fence about this race.

Michael Moore who supported Dennis then Edwards (health care) is hated by all the MSM
because he exposes their lies and propaganda. They attacked Sicko and F-911

Progressives and democrats should read what he said if they are on the fence,
there is no reason to be sitting on it any more.

Edited on Mon Apr-21-08 09:47 AM by Seabiscuit
First KO, then RM, now MM.

Never mind that Obama opposes universal health care, and probably never bothered to watch your movie, "Sicko". Never mind that he's in the pockets of the big insurance HMOs and the pharmaceutical drug cartel.

Hillary said "Farrakhan" in a debate, so damn the important issues - it's so much easier to portray superciliously Hillary as "downright disgusting" than to exercise a little sane judgment.

One after another of the supposed progressive icons have shown their arses, which are dripping with the kool-aide.

None have the intellectual and moral integrity of John Edwards or Al Gore, who are smart enough to avoid endorsing anyone, and smart enough to stay out of all the mudslinging.

Stick to making movies, Michael. Your brain has turned to mush.

MM's endorsement of Obama will not only hurt Obama in a GE, it could turn the tide during the remaining primaries by alienating true progressives from both MM and Obama.

According to Center for Responsive Politics, a non-partisan group that tracks campaign finance filings, Clinton has received $781,112 in contributions from the health-care sector during the current election cycle, which makes her the No. 2 recipient of funds from that sector, behind only Sen. Rick Santorum, R-Pa., who received $977,354.
Hillary Clinton is the No. 2 recipient of campaign contributions from the health care industry, according to a non-partisan group that tracks donations.
Clinton, the only Democrat to be in the top five in total donations from the sector, is also the No. 1 senator in terms of donations from nurses and health professionals, and the No. 2 recipient of donations from employees of hospitals and nursing homes, as well as insurance companies.

146. You are OUT OF YOUR MIND. The Candidate of the HMOs and Insurance Industry is HILLARY.
I suspect that, particularly if Hillary keeps up the level of sleazy shit-flinging she's engaged in recently (let's not pretend, and call it "mud") Al Gore will endorse Obama pretty soon.

There's no love lost between him and her Highness, we know that.

179. Here's one thing I know
If one person is upset by your (in this case HRC's) behavior, the problem could lie with them, or it could lie with you.

If many people are upset by your behavior, the problem probably lies with you.

"First KO, then RM, now MM."

And when Gore and/or Edwards throws their support to Obama, you'll find some reason to condemn and discount their endorsement, as well.

The problem lies with Clinton.

If anyone should know that "universal" is the difference between success and failure with health care reform, he should.

Style always triumphs over substance, apparently.

It is good to read him speak so unequivocally for voting D no matter what.

86. Do you really think their health care plan is all that different?
And do you honestly think they will have that much say in it once in the white house? Congress will make the final decision on what health plan this country gets (if any). And the 2 plans between Obama and Clinton really aren't all that different from what I've seen.

As an Obama supporter I am now starting to come around to Hillary's plan to make it mandatory for everyone, but in the end I will still be supporting Obama as I really don't think outside of that one small detail their plans are any different. And the fact Obama doesn't take money from lobbyists, is not part of the DLC, and was right on the Iraq war is enough for me to support him over her, on everything else they seem to be almost identical.

95. Yes, they are fundamentally different.
Obama hopes to achieve universal coverage by making it optional. Good luck with that.

Any rational consumer operating under his plan will only buy insurance when (and if) they get sick, and since you can't be rejected based on preexisting conditions, the insurance pool picks up the cost, without the financial benefit of the insured having paid in while he was healthy.

You won't get affordable until you get universal. This means that healthy and cheap people need to participate too.

Congress will take their lead from the administration. Obama has signaled that he considers his plan a virtue because it only represents subtle tweaks to the existing system. No congress is going to take the political risks required to give him more than he's willing to settle for.

... she's the only one of the two who considers universal coverage with a meaningful public component to be a worthy goal.

Door #1, Door #2 or Door #3. We already know that Door #3 (McCain) is no change whatsoever. Door #1 and #2 are the difference between universal and not.

182. Hillary's plan...
May be marginally better than Obama's, but they have so much in common, that I find making my decision based solely on that issue, is like the knuckleheads who vote solely on guns or abortion. There are a LOT of important issues beyond health care, and on most of those, it is Obama who has the upper hand. And trying to argue that the health care industry doesn't own Hillary is like try to say that Fox is unbiased. Numbers don't lie.

139. Michael Moore is so on point. Wait. He's fat? Nevermind then.
Will you idiots stop discounting his opinions because he's "fat"? That's ridiculous. Since when do we criticize politicians, thinkers or activists based on their appearance?

Benjamin Franklin was a short, fat, bald, bespectacled, doofy lookin guy. It had absolutely no bearing on the fact that he was an innovative genius. Hillary doesn't have the body of a supermodel and occasionally looks pretty wrinkly. That has no bearing on her ability and competence to do the job of president and her supporters would be OUTRAGED if you were to make that criticism... as would I!!

Are only the thin and beautiful allowed to express their opinion?

I guess I'm not surprised people are "throwing him under the bus" - a phrase that has been overused to the point of absurdity. It's just hard for me to swallow that you will discount the man for being FAT after he has produced such works as Sicko, Farenheit 911, Bowling for Columbine, Roger & Me, etc. Agree with him or disagree, you must at least acknowledge that he has given voice and shed light on issues ignored by the media, but that are very important to the progressive community. Show a little respect! What have you done to help these causes?

I loved Michael Moore's letter endorsing John Edwards the night before the Iowa primaries. I love this letter endorsing Barack. Go Michael!

156. There are those who will take this Endorsement lightly,
but I tell you what, this is one huge endorsement Obama has picked up
before PA goes to the polling booth.

Thank you Mike, must admit, been waiting for this for awhile and thank
you for opening this up;

He pointed out that if Obama is supported by Ted Kennedy, who is Catholic, and the Catholic Church is led by a Pope who was in the Hitler Youth, that can mean only one thing: OBAMA LOVES HITLER!

and this;

How sad for a country that wanted to see the first woman elected to the White House. That day will come -- but it won't be you. We'll have to wait for the current Democratic governor of Kansas to run in 2016 (you read it here first!).

She is the VP choice too, but sheeesh...

Thanks for your post.

162. STAY OUT OF FLORIDA
Thanks MM for the Endorsement!
For you outsiders who keep asking to have our vote counted, I as a Floridian can't stand your influence on our primaries. You came in and interrupted the 2000 count. It cost us big-time. we had problems in 06 its OUR PROBLEM TO RESOLVE. If you don't like the way we vote tough shit! If our elected officials came up with this cluster-fuck of a date change its our vote who will take them out of office not YOURS!

We have states rights! That means if we want to make ourselves look like idiots it is our right to do so. Quit it! I hear everyone bitching about florida and michigan. and blaming the DNC. We chose to move our contest (ala the Republican Gov and legislature FLORIDA). If the DNC say don't do this and we do it anyway we as a state must hold those who violated our party rules accountable. It is not up to MI, NY, NJ. It is up to Floridians period!

As far as disenfranchisement. I am more worried about the machines than anything. We will vote come November. We will be a force to reckon with. Hopefully the Candidate will be Obama. If not then the 44 will still be Dem.

All the Top tier candidates agreed that MI and FL wouldn't count. All signed agreements stating that fact. Had the protests about FL and MI been made before a vote was cast it would be fair to complain. None did so. an ex post facto protest is just a case of sour grapes. The re-votes was the parties attempt to reconcile no one wanted to so end of story.

If the DNC allows us to be seated at the convention then thank you for forgiving our trespass. We will behave better next time. We will deal with our errant legislature in our own time.

165. This Florida Democrat agrees
I'd add, if our state party is so incompetent that it can't come up with a solution to the DNC rules in one year, let us take care of that.

191. Excellent Comprehensive Endorsement
by Michael Moore..I've been wondering about him:)..and I come on here tonight and see he's done it!

I like the way he set this up with some history and carried it through to the end letting us know he knows that this isn't about Obama but our revolution with him leading the way. And, the necessity to stay ever vigilant.

216. Well, arguing that the country isn't ready for a black president is pretty much bigotry.
Neither Obama nor a single one of his supporters ever said the country wasn't ready for a female president. And Obama never attacked women or any other of HRC's groups of supporters, while much of HRC's campaign has been based on the notion that most Obama supporters have no real right to have a say in our party or its nominating process.

So yes, she has campaigned as a bigot, although she may not be a bigot privately, as far as I know.

211. "what's going on is bigger than him at this point"
Exactly! It's obvious that neither candidate favors real universal health care, so why not go with the one who seems to be stirring up people to be more active citizens? It is US who will get it by pushing from the bottom, not Obama and not Clinton.

Then Hilary is a hypocrite to criticize Barack for his association with the pastor.

I'm so glad I voted for Barack!
